I get so many DMs after live videos asking about the position of my hair light so I decided to do a quick video with Erica and show you how to best place your hair light for separation. The key to this is to make the portrait lighting look natural or at least make sense to the scene.

Thanks Daniel, super job as usual and Erica has an amazing smile as usual... A question: You seem to cut the top of her head in every shot; is it your style of shooting or is it for the demo? Thanks again.

Daniel, can you discuss lighting ratios and how you consistently achieve this look seemingly without regard for where lights are placed. Is this always a balancing act or do you have tried and true methods of placing light sources?
@DanielNortonPhotographer
@DanielNortonPhotographer 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Generally I start with a 1:1 ratio and adjust based on the reflectance of the hair

Daniel (and Erika), I think it would be neat for your models to give a short presentation on what a photographer can do to make them feel more comfortable and confident in front of the lens with each "On Set" session. Not long, but, a short brief explanation of what they expect from a photographer in terms of directions, ideas, concepts etc. Thanks! **Explanations should be given with the idea of helping those non-professional models who are helping us photographers who are learning how to shoot plus direct a model.

Not sure that would work but perhaps as a video in and of itself

Another way to do hairlight is to bounce the strobe into a dimpled silver reflector. That is pretty much the standard for tv commercials the way I was taught back in the stone age. Sometimes I toss a little cto on it as well. Good explanation that the hair is reflective. Direct flash sometimes looks too obvious.
@DanielNortonPhotographer
@DanielNortonPhotographer 5 жыл бұрын
Ah cool idea! Needs some dimpled bounce board now!

Nice video as always - a sketch diagram would have also helped to make it clear after showing it - looks like about 180 degrees line from main light to subject?

Yet another great video with a fun pro model. Off-topic question: You’ve said you’re Photoshop- challenged and don’t use it much if at all. But are there times when you’ve felt the need to use a retoucher? Just wondering.
@DanielNortonPhotographer
@DanielNortonPhotographer 5 жыл бұрын
For advertising and larger jobs a retoucher is hired. I know enough to tweak my images, but generally don't "need" to.
