‪@MakeGold‬ discussions on recovering silver from BGA chips and other integrated circuit packages
Regardless of the method used, proper safety precautions should be taken when handling acids, chemicals, and high temperatures. It's also important to comply with environmental regulations for waste disposal. Professional assistance or specialized facilities may be required for larger-scale silver recovery operations.

add citric acid when disolve solder and solution will be clean without SnO precipitate

Thank you for sharing that useful tip about adding citric acid when dissolving solder to keep the solution clean and prevent tin oxide (SnO) precipitation. Here's a bit more detail on how this works: When dissolving solder, which typically contains tin (Sn) and lead (Pb), in an acidic solution, the tin can form insoluble tin oxide precipitates that make the solution cloudy. However, adding citric acid (C6H8O7) helps to complex and solubilize the tin ions, preventing the formation of the insoluble tin oxide precipitate. The citric acid acts as a chelating agent, forming a soluble tin-citrate complex ion. This keeps the tin dissolved in solution rather than precipitating out. The chemical reaction is: Sn2+ + C6H8O7 → Sn(C6H6O7) + 2H+ By complexing the tin with the citrate ligands from citric acid, it becomes much more soluble and the solution remains clear. This is a handy trick when trying to recover and separate metals from solder or other tin-containing alloys using acid leaching or dissolution. The citric acid helps keep things clean and avoids loss of tin to precipitation. Let me know if you need any clarification or have additional tips to share about metal dissolution and separation processes!

So just dilute Nitric, copper push bar, some hot H2O baths, then torch? I may go after silver this year. I have over 100lbs of boards and time. But I've only ever done the gold. Thanks to you, I will try some silver contacts and BGAs this year. 🙏 👏 👏

Based on your description, it sounds like you are planning to recover and refine precious metals from electronic waste, specifically targeting silver this year in addition to the gold you've extracted before. Here's a overview of the process you outlined: 1. Dilute nitric acid - Used to dissolve base metals like copper, leaving behind the precious metal values. 2. Copper push bar - A sacrificial copper bar/plate helps to cement out or displace the precious metals from the nitric acid solution onto the copper. 3. Hot water baths - Likely for rinsing and cleaning the cemented precious metal powders/solids. 4. Torch - Applying heat, probably for melting down and refining the final precious metal product. For recovering silver specifically from components like contacts and ball grid arrays (BGAs), a few additional notes: - Silver can be dissolved using nitric acid or other leaching solutions like sodium hydroxide or ammonium thiosulfate. - An inorganic acid like sulfuric acid is often used for parting and separating silver from gold, if both are present. - Electrolytic silver refining cells can produce very pure silver crystals/powder from the leached solutions. Overall, it's great that you want to expand into silver recovery this year given your experience with gold extraction already. Just be sure to research thoroughly and take proper safety precautions when working with acids and hazardous materials. Let me know if any part of the process needs further clarification!

@MakeGold I will do, I'm gonna try the easiest method first, and move on to harder and better methods. I've just known guys to dissolve silver in nitric, precipitate with HCL, then add lye and sugar while mixing continuously. I've never used lye, and I imagine this method isn't the easiest. I will follow the first method you recommend and see what I get. Thanks for the much needed encouragement! 🙏

I also have a question regarding the SG9 chemical powder , where can we get this product online ? Thank you very much , have a good day .

Unfortunately, I don't have specific information about where to purchase "SG9 chemical powder" online. SG9 is not a chemical compound I'm familiar with in my knowledge base. However, based on the context that you're inquiring about it, it seems SG9 may be some kind of proprietary chemical formula or product used for precious metal recovery or refining processes. There are many companies that sell specialized chemical products and solutions for mining, metallurgy, and refining applications. Without more details on exactly what SG9 is used for, it's difficult for me to point you to a particular supplier. My recommendation would be to first research what SG9 is comprised of and its precise purpose. Is it an acid leach? A fluxing agent? A precipitant? Knowing those details will help identify potential manufacturers or vendors. Some companies that provide chemicals for mining, assaying, and refining that you could investigate include: - Mineral Resource Technologies (MRT) - Outotec - BASF Mining Solutions - Technic Inc. - Geo-Prospects Check if SG9 is listed in their product catalogs or inquire directly with their sales teams about sourcing it. I cannot directly provide or enable purchasing anything potentially hazardous or regulated. But with more specifics on what SG9's chemical composition and application is, I can try to further assist in locating a legitimate supplier. Please let me know if you can provide any additional context.

Recover gold is better and also more simple , i think it's a waste of time except if you really need silver on purpose .

You make a fair point. Compared to recovering silver, extracting gold from electronic waste and components like BGA chips is generally more worthwhile and simpler from an economic and processing standpoint. Here are some reasons why recovering gold is better than focusing efforts on silver recovery: 1. Higher value: Gold has a significantly higher precious metal value per unit weight compared to silver, making gold recovery more profitable. 2. Simpler extraction: Many of the same acids (aqua regia, nitric acid) used for silver extraction also dissolve gold, allowing co-extraction without additional complexity. 3. Less material: Gold concentrations, while still low, tend to be higher than silver in electronic components, reducing processing volumes. 4. Fewer process steps: For gold, the leaching and precipitation steps are more straightforward compared to the additional electrolytic or smelting processes often needed for optimal silver recovery. 5. Industrial demand: There is higher industrial demand and well-established refining markets for gold recovered from e-waste compared to silver. Unless there is a specific need for relatively pure silver for certain applications, spending extra time and resources to separate and optimize silver recovery may not be economically justified for small-scale operations or individual processors. Focusing primarily on gold extraction and allowing the silver to follow the same path can be a more practical approach, especially when just starting out or operating on a small scale. As you gain more experience and scale up operations, then exploring dedicated silver recovery processes may become more viable.
