Thanks for the in depth steps! I was wondering if you have given any thought to getting a book press made from scrap lumber and carriage bolts? I had the local lumber store make me a big one for less than $20.00 to do all the work.

Hello ! I have one of those presses, I made it myself as you say, with wooden planks and bolts. It happens that I don't usually use it for videos because many people tell me that they don't have that tool...

Fairly good the method is easy ,but it wohave been better if the pages had been knocked level on all sides, I noticed that you do have a clamp to hold the pages .

Amazing ❤. I printed single 188 papers to bind the book alone, cuz giving someone to bind a book is a bit expensive 😅. I have a question tho. Why cut the edges and put a thread inside?
@bookbindig_studio
@bookbindig_studio 3 ай бұрын
Hello ! The cut on the spine and the threads provide some resistance to the opening mechanism. Many years ago it was done this way to simulate a false seam. You can try it without the threads but you have to be very sure that the adhesive on the spine will keep everything in place. In fact, that book that you see in the video was new and as soon as I started reading it the pages fell off, it only had adhesive on the spine...now with the threads it works better.

Hello, im planning to make a book, Im wondering what is the best, Sew bind or glued bind? Can i use a regular white glue? Can i glue it and after that sew it?
@bookbindig_studio
@bookbindig_studio Ай бұрын
Hello ! Sewn binding is better than just adhesive binding. If you are going to use adhesive, it should only be one that is diluted with water, like white school adhesives. If the adhesive is specific for binding, the better, because they are manufactured free of acids.

Hi, Instead of sewing this book by hand, is there a machine that can do the stitching of the book?

Why is there a need to use threads? Can you explain please...
@bookbindig_studio
@bookbindig_studio 11 ай бұрын
Hello ! With the threads and furrows, the gluing of the sheets is reinforced, it serves to give strength to the spine. It works like a false seam, it is a very old technique to avoid the sewing of signatures that takes much more time and work.

Is that bookbinding press made out of cardboard?
@willgrime
@willgrime 4 ай бұрын
Go to your local joiner or carpenter’s workshop and get them to cut you two lengths of plywood about 15” or 375mm long by about 2” or 50mm wide. (Joiners in the UK use mm, not cm.). The plywood should ideally be 1” or 25mm thick: it needs to be stiff rather than strong, or when you tighten your press around a text block it will spring apart in the centre. Ask them to bore a hole, 8mm in diameter, 1.25” or 30mm from each end of each strip. Buy some set screws about 3” or 75mm long, ideally with wing nuts for tightening them, and stainless steel washers for each side. (A bolt has a smooth shank under the head and then a short length of threading. A set screw is similar, but has no smooth section: rather the thread extends all the way up to the head. It’s a more flexible option than a bolt for this kind of work). Fit the strips together with the set screws, washers, and wing nuts and you have a book press that will last pretty much forever. The parts are freely available and shouldn’t cost more that £10$ off eBay, including postage, if your local hardware store can’t help. Alternatively, you could buy a nice old Dryad book press for around £150$…

Super...one day I got an idea to cut stripes on the back to add more adhesive to squeeze in to bind more. And also thought to add some flexibility by fixing plastic stripes to it. But fixing with threads is a super idea. I thought to cut at the back zeebra cuttings i.e zig zac to add more strength to it. But this most enough to repair. Thanks to your vedio. May God bless you.
