I have wasted so much paint trying to get the color I wanted…but came upon your video. What is in my head never turns out the same on the canvas. I was totally doing everything wrong…rather than trying to use different colors to get that gradient look, I should’ve “blended” 🤦🏼‍♀️. Not everyone explains…thank you so much!

This is a great tutorial, I especially appreciated the information regarding the different brushes and how to use them to achieve a smooth blend as well as how much easier it is to have multiples of right brush for each color and its particular task. I confess that I've been known to run out of brushes and forced to use the same brush for every color paint and what a disaster it turned into! Just a suggestion for those like me who don't own an easel and are working on a very large canvas like the one in this demonstration: I've been known to put a couple dining room chairs together side by side, covered with a painter's drop cloth of course, and then put a couple small eye hooks in the back inside edge of the canvas wood frame on either side, one set at the very bottom of the wood frame and a second set about a foot or so above the others, then used paracord or other thin rope threaded through the eye hooks and wrap around the chair backs so I can pull my canvas snug to keep it in place. It's not a perfect solution, especially because you need slip something under the bottom of the canvas to bring it a couple inches up off the chairs so you can paint to the very bottom edge, plus it's still kind of hard on your back, but I find it provides better access to my work and I can move from one side to the other without worrying about losing my balance and stepping on my work as I maneuver around it while it's laying on the floor. It also keeps my work from being walked on by my little jack russell terrorists (that isn't a typo). Anyway, thanks again for this tutorial, it's been a great help!

Thank you for this video. I just had to giggle most of the time as I'm doing a big canvas with sky blending from purple to blue to light yellow orange to deep orange and the amount of brushes, water, extender medium just everything you explained made me feel so much better that I wasn't the idiot that I thought I was!!! It feels as if the paint, canvas brushes is having fun with me grrrr! It's not an easy task and lots of frustration and wasting paint Ok now I know it's not as easy as I thought it should've/could've been and I now have the courage to tackle the blending task again!! Bless you for sharing this video.

I’m still pretty new to acrylics (other than pouring), & haven’t tried blending on such a large scale, but in my experience it seems like using either the right amount of glycerin (very cheap, works like a charm for both acrylics or mixed with iso as a homemade blending solution for alcohol inks), or something like Artist Loft’s or Golden’s Slow Dry Blending Gel Mediums make a BIG difference to the drying time. Flow Aid does extend drying time, but it’s primarily intended to increase its flow, like floetrol (a paint leveler & fluid medium we use a lot in pouring); the slowing of drying times that it provides is secondary & incidental, so not what it’s designed for. Whereas these Slow Dry blending mediums really do give you a nice long time to blend before they dry, more similar to oils. Using enough floetrol does also extend drying times DRASTICALLY (enough that if it’s fairly fluid, you really need a leveling table to set the painting on while it dries so that your design doesn’t just slide right off the canvas/surface or become super distorted… In fact, I just ruined a new pour I really loved because it had been almost 48 hours & it looked dry, but it wasn’t, & I put some nice big dents into it. 😩 In a smaller ratio the drying time wouldn’t be that dramatically long, but it depends on what consistency you’re looking for; any more than a tiny dab of floetrol (as with pouring medium) will pretty quickly turn even heavy bodied paints into a fluid, or at least a very soft, thinned paint, so if you want heavy body paint, it’s not the move (Slow Dry gel medium would be better, or just adding a couple drops of glycerin). Others who like fluid acrylics, high flow acrylics, etc., might be fine with it (experiment at your own risk, don’t waste expensive materials starting out). But anyway, I think all of these options will extend drying time a lot more than Flow Aid will. So if anyone is struggling with this & finds the pace required too frantic, using a medium like that might make it a lot more tolerable. I’ve only used it for smaller scale blending, as I said, but I’ve definitely painted a sizable patch & found that it takes quite a while for it to fully dry. Definitely plan ahead & have a safe, level, dust/hair free area for it to dry when you’re ready, so that things don’t fall in it while it’s still wet. Besides floetrol, I don’t know that any of these will actually extend the drying to oil painting lengths (upwards of 12 hours), but err on the side of caution. God knows, it was depressing to ruin one of my favorite pours. 🥲 Hopefully I can cover up the imperfections, because a lot of paint & medium went into it, & I still like the rest… At least I got a photo… But these things happen. A costly lesson, but one well learned.
