It really depends on the guitar. My BC Baritone sounds different than the guitar of our guitarist. But for rhythm V30, V30(friedman style) + G12M. for melody jensen ts + G12M but there's a lot to check, too. Eminence has now a DV77 in 16 Ohm and I am the first who ordered it at big T. And regarding IR. I use my 720nm-IR filter when filming IR with my BMPCC ... ;-)

As a thumb rule, I use darker mics on darker speakers/positions and more present mics on trebly speakers/positions. This way your microphone faders become more like the bands of an eq.

After trying literally thousands of IR's and checking the best ones in the rehearsal room with my band I ended up using only an M160 on a Diezel cab loaded with V30's. So I'm glad to hear that sometimes you use that mic alone. I really did want to use an SM57 in some way, but with that mic the highs became painfully scratchy at really high volumes and I wanted to sound good at shows, not in my room. With the M160, the highs came up in perfect balance and I got an enjoyable, creamy sound. If I had to use a real cab I would get a 2x12 Mesa cab and swap one of the speakers to a Swamp Thang. I've decided this long ago, based on one of your videos. Loved the V30 + Swamp Thang combo.

Dude, I got your DV-77 IR pack and I just wanted to say, thanks! Thanks a lot! Not only am I getting a much warmer and clearer tone, but I've learned a lot. I own a GE200 (I know, not professional tools and amps, but I'm a bedroom guitar player). I've tried using the onboard cabs of the GE200, but they're a mess, so I decided to start playing with IRs. I got some Ownhammer IRs that got me close to what I wanted sound-wise, but somehow, on all the cab IRs I tried, I had to do some drastic EQ cuts and boosts. The first IR I loaded from your pack was the DV-77 linear. It didn't sound right... I thought I was in for disappointment again... Then I realized the EQ I had from the GE200 patch was still on, so I turned it off. Lo and behold!! The tone came alive! Not just that, but I didn't even have to tweak the amp sim. No more muddy tone, everything crisp and clear. I actually realized that the EVH 5150 amp sim sounds sooo different than the dual rectifier sim, thing that I didn't realize when using the other IRs. I understood what you meant when you said the DV-77 is a transparent speaker. I don't know what kind of magic you did with these IRs, but I don't need any post EQ in my daw when using the DV-77 IR. I tried it now with two guitars, one with a SD Nazgul in the bridge tuned to E standard, and one with a SD JB in the bridge tuned to D standard. Both sounded amazing on the same patch, with no tweaks specific for each guitar(which I had to do before)! I also realized that the EVH amp sim sounds a lot more marshally than I thought it was :) In short, best 50$ I've ever spent, worth every penny (and I only loaded the FIRST IR).

I have been using the death metal recto DI tracks in the session for tone matching. There's currently 15ish amp Sims in the chain using the same virtual cabinet and level matched to switch between them. To hear their character eq them in the 'amp' so to learn how to best apply them. Your matrix is great idea for consistency. Great course, i even made an homage to the grindstein by some thoughtful fx routing to split the signal and blend In the channel as i don't own one. But i got pretty close to the sound of one using audiority hm2 and ignite amps PRO FET distortion.

Awesome! I see you#re learning and having fun. The Audiority HM2 is great btw! Also try to do the same thing with the modern metal DIs. The amps will react differently because the tuning is not that extremely low like in the DM example.

Just finished the course yesterday. It is amazing!!! Kohle, could you please make a content or give some advice about loudness sweet spot of speakers? Its like, I understood that for tight metal the power amp adds unpleasant clipping/saturation. But the speakers also behaves unpleasantly after cranking too much them. It'd be huge help if you give a light in this topic In my case I got a little evh 5150 15w, with 2x12 v30's. The speakers behaves good between Master Vol 1 and 2 (9 o'clock maximum), after that just adds boomy.

Hi, I have two questions. Question1 : what do you think about different settings for left and right)? For instance Amp1/Mic1 + Amp2/Mic2 on the left and Amp1/Mic2 + Amp2/Mic1 on the right side. Instead of amp and mic you can also use speaker+mic combination. You get the point. Or - what I liked to use more than 10 years ago - find a good sound with a mic or mic-combination on one (e.g. the left) guitar speaker (in most cases a 57 and V30) and then hook up the same setting but mirrored on the right speaker. (easy in case of one sm57 and a cab with 4xV30). So you get the same sound for the right side. But not exactly due to slightly different speakers, not excatly to the µm exact mic placement. This can widen the stereo effect. And for the other two guitars you flip the sides. Question 2: I often see people in the studio - I think you, too - micing also the lower speakers. In my (less compared to your) experience the upper speakers sound better. And if you want to use the lower speakers put the cabinet higher. E.g. on beer crates. Because of the strong reflections from the floor. 50cm delay cancels out frequencies of 1m wavelength, 300Hz. So you get compfiltering in the lower mids. Did you noticed that, too? Does it really matter? It's only imagination?
@KohleAudioKult
@KohleAudioKult 3 жыл бұрын
I only do that if I want both guitarists to have a distinct tone. I have also done mixes with a slightly different sound left and right, but that never really did anything for me. Here's an example: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mL9nl82p1JzQqmQ.html

Super cool stuff from your channel, love it! I have a question: how much does a certain mic pre affects the sound, talking about screaming hi gain tones? There are a lot of harmonics and overtones (I hope to use the correct words) in a distorted sound, can you hear a huge difference using a Neve instead of an Api or an Ssl with the same microphone? Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Hi Kristian, I really learned a lot from you regarding micing a guitar cab. During Lockdown I also created my own IRs and I realized that the quality only depends on the Mic Placement (Es steht und fällt mit der Platzierung der Mikrofone ;) ) I only have the problem that I do not have a seperate LiveRoom in my basement at home. Thus I cannot listen to the mic-placement on my Monitors (JBL305 MkII) but only on my headphones (DT770 Pro). Even this is a compromise. I have to play the amp quietly. There is sound-bleeding from the cabinet in the headphones. I came across the solution to place the mics while using headphones, record them, listen to the record via my monitors and re-place the mics if needed. This process consumes a lot of time. Your approach to flip the phase is a awesome Idea but hardly possible on headphones when there is bleeding from the Cabinet. Do you have an Idea how to deal with it in a better way? Cheers from Germany Christoph

for modern metal stuff, can't really go wrong with V30s (friggin Nolly...) but if i want to gravitate towards 80s and 90s stuff i would blend it with T75s, G12-65, or even K100 and maybe swap the V30 with Eminence Governor or WGS Vet30. Been interested to buy a pack of DV77 or Hesu Demon IRs because they definitely sound more balanced than the good ol' V30.

Technical question. Lets assume normal situation that musician is using 4 the same speakers in one cab. And sometimes at studio people are using more than one mic, for example one ribbon (for low end) and one dynamic (for brightness). Then they blend them. It always creates phasing problems, more noise, more cables and so on. So why not just use one mic and EQ? Especially almost always people are using some EQs.
@KohleAudioKult
@KohleAudioKult 3 жыл бұрын
Because the effect of blending is way more complex than EQ. Imagine 1000 bands. The way a proper blend fills up certain frequencies is very difficult to achieve with EQ.

Kohle help!! I just watched your URM vid on reamping without a reamp box, just using a passive DI. I am confused on the signal chain. What is that utility/ function of a “converter” and why do I need it in between my computer and the DI box. Would my Scarlett 18i8 interface suffice? Unfortunately the only outputs on my 18i8 are line level, would I still be able to use one of those outputs if I just used some sort of adapter/ converter box to bring that line level down to mic level? I am very confused!
@KohleAudioKult
@KohleAudioKult 3 жыл бұрын
The signal in your computer is digital. It needs to be converted to analog. There is an inbuilt converter in every interface (like your Scarlett). So nothing to worry about. It's just important ot understand where the signal is analog and where it's digital.

It's more about the amp. The amp needs to be at a "comfortable" level. You start at zero with the master volume and at some point it feels like the amp is "coming to live". That's enough volume. you don't need more.
@lordbanhmi3389
@lordbanhmi3389 Жыл бұрын
I usually have channel volume at about 1 o'clock, master at zero. I then slowly turn the master up until the cab starts to resonate. Do a couple test runs. and adjust from there. edit: Like Kohle said, it will start to "come to life". You really will know when you start getting in that zone.
