So is this approach viable for metal? Like 80's thrash metal style drums? Or would all the room mics make the mix too bloated?

man this is spot on.. as a drummer and engineer trhough 40+ years this is probably one of the most "to the point" about drum sound. no1: the drummer.. 95% of the sound comes from the drummer. At one occasion I had the opportunity to test my drums fully mic'ed up at a large event, using me and 2 other drummers. Same everything else. Even sticks. The difference was MIND blowing! The sound engineer almost went crazy.. he also learned somethng :-) That changed my whole perspective on drum sound. LIve or in the studio. I will though say that even small rooms are fine to make organic drums in (off course large rooms are easier for this purpose :-) ).. just requires a lot of experimenting with mic placement and types of mics.. and a few mix tricks.

I'm not an expert in recording perfect sounding drums, all info here is super valuable. But this thing about the room, I think it should be reconsidered. Great sounding drums were recorded in small, not even studio rooms. Just thinking about at least 2 Pink Floyd albums recorded on Gilmour's boat, Foo Fighters recording in Dave's garage, Brothers in Arms recorded in a 6x8m room....the list can continue. The main thing is that who is recording/mixing is maybe more important than the room itself. Just my thoughts :)

Well done sir. I agree that with your opinion that the drummer is the most important component. Having a solid drummer behind the kit will make or break the recording process. And I cannot express how important tuning is. Sounds like you are making more drum tuning video's. Until then here are some tips to anyone that reads this. Bass Drum: to be brief you want to do LPP ( Lowest Pitch Possible ) tuning. And usually you want the resonant head to be slightly higher then the batter head. And have a mic port on the reso to allow the drum to breathe, plus it helps with microphone placement ( Obviously ) and if you need to put a towel or the like inside the drum. ALWAYS use a impact patch on the batter head. Think NIKE and JUST DO IT! For a more attack sound use Wood beaters. Hard plastic is a good second choice but depending on certain variables the plastic can get tacky and actually start sticking to the head and or impact patch. It can get hot from playing and will start sticking over time. Use hard felt beaters if you want a more "WET" sound. It still sounds great but will have a little less attack but can give you more boom in yo room! Use a 2ply batter head and a one ply but thicker reso head. I do not like the EMAD bass head. I have never been able to get the sound I want on my gear with them but have heard them on other drummers kick and liked it. But just not my thing. Try a Aquarian Superkick 1 or Superkick 2. But any two ply head with a minimal dampening ring should work. Bottom line experiment and find what works on the gear you have! Toms: Two ply batter side, one ply reso side. Again have the reso side slightly tighter then batter, although you can get longer sustain if equal or even a bit looser then batter. I like coated on tom batters but as a alternative I get REMO pinstripes on occasion to change up the sound. Plus they are super easy to tune, can take a beating and can give you super punchy tom sounds if that's what you want. I have been playing for 20+ years but really did not start focusing on tuning skills until 5-10 years into playing. And as much as I think My drum tuning skills are you can always improve and learn. Never turn down good or unique advice. Unless you are dick head elitist. Alright that was not as brief as I could have been but I could have continued ha ha! Look forward to more drum video's my German friend. Prost!

What I/we did is record as dry and possible and try to add room later via a room IR. Our drum "studio" is a small cabin in the woods, that is simply what we have and I have to work with what we got. I currently experimenting with the specifics of the processing. I literally mounted the room mics on the door to the cabin, and run simulated the reverb/room on those mics with a VST :D.

I do use Altiverb for bigger room sounds and for reverb. But for some reason IRs could never replace real room mics for me.
@Hostile_Design
@Hostile_Design 3 жыл бұрын
@@KohleAudioKult I realized I misread your reply completely. Revised answer: Oh, interesting I used a plugin from Waves for room IRs, I think it worked out quite well, sending all part sof the kit to it and varying reverb amounts and hitting that fairly dry room mic the most. But I'm still very much experimenting, I'll check that plugin out if it has a trial. Thanks for the video and the tips :)!

Remember, when it comes to the drum kit there is no rule that says Every drum you are playing has to come from the same manufacturer. This is especially true in the studio setting. You may have a ludwig snare, a pearl kick and some Tama Tom's. These choices should be made based on the shells and drum shell tone, not their brand name. The same goes for cymbals and microphones.
@dpinskey
@dpinskey Жыл бұрын
I wish I had figured out earlier how much more important overheads and room mics are in a mix than close mics. It is totally what gives your kit it’s character in a mix. But having said that, it is the sum of all of your mics, room and close mics, that allows for greater flexibility in a mix.

Tom not tuning right? Take the hads out place the tom on a flat surface as a granite or marble countertop shine a light inside the drum and from the outside check for light escaping from the bottom bearing edges turn it around and look mark where the light come out the there is a cheap way to fix it but is not exactly "the proper way " but it works and its cheap Glue 4 sheets of 220 sand paper to a flat surface like the kick drumhead box or a plywood sheet with spray on glue. place the tom on top and sand the tom by turning arround on top of the sand paper (lightly a couple half turns at the time)wipe the edges and check it on the table with the light until either the light its even or there is almost no light escaping Or the proper professional way its again sand the edges on the flat sanpaer then with re_cut the bearing edges with a table router Your welcome

Now I just have the kit from Thomann and I was thinking of getting something nicer for the kick. I like the Audix D6, it seems to have a ton of bass, but I am a bit scared that it will compromise the attack or more "tup-tup" sound of the kick. Hey have you ever tried the beat buddy pedal ? Its live drums recorded into a pedal. I'm sure you have no need for it but pretty cool practice tool. Love the john bonham ludwig kit sound.

I'm curious about the role of the Gobos in this scenario, since you say in the beginning: rip off absorption material! Particularly, since you also stress figure eight pattern of ribbons, as the Gobos would remove reflections?!. Particularly curios about this for the stereo Wurst mics. Haven't seen a stereo Wurst, but it sounds great! Thanks Kohle!

In my liveroom there is NO high frequency absorbtion at all. Then the gobos help to create darker zones without too much direct signal.

@@KohleAudioKult Thanks for filling in that detail, makes sense, and definitely cool idea to tune/create zones to your liking within a room. Cheers from Frankfurt to the lovely Odenwald!;)

How do you get your hi-hat under control? With the overhead microphones as well as with the snare microphones I always have too much dispersion from the hi-hat.
@KohleAudioKult
@KohleAudioKult 3 жыл бұрын
That's a complex issue. Make the drummer hit the snare hard, don't use a loud hihat, know the polar pattern of your snare mic etc...

You rule Kohle! Love the video. I want a pair of the sE ribbons! =) Kohle, I once heard of a technique, where you try and match the close mics with where the drums are in the overhead stereo image, panning the close mics to match and hit in the same spot. Have you ever heard or tried this technique?

I’m doing this with the close cymbal mics. Hi hat, ride etc
@usynthesis4749

@@KohleAudioKult Interesting!...So you apply this technique to the high hat and cymbals but not necessarily the kick and snare, toms etc...You think it would sound weird to try and do this with the whole kit? That seems to clash with the idea of keeping the snare and kick down the middle. I guess it would be something to experiment with.... Thanks for the reply Kohler!
Are you using the right SNARE BATTER HEAD?
