@@JohnBillow it depends on the kind you buy. Always read the instructions. But normally the heat protectant acts to lock in moisture and also acts as a weak hair insulator to protect it from heat damage. It's not foolproof but better than not using one. Just don't keep heat on one spot of the hair too long or you will damage it, with or without protectant.
