How to BMW E30 external inline fuel pump and filter replacement location

I had some stalling issues with my E30 and from some symptoms i read that it was the external fuel pump. It's been really noisy so I thought it was the culprit and/or a clogged fuel filter. I did a quick summary of what to do.
Picked parts up from amazon:
fuel pump with lifetime warranty: amzn.to/2m0B12N
bosch fuel filter (oem quality): amzn.to/2l1Iij3
** problem ended up being a bad fusible link near the battery. it cut off power to the ecu causing the stall**

Did you figure out what was wrong with the car, since this didn't fix the problem? I just had the same experience as you - loss of power and stalling until the car just wouldn't start. I replaced the in line pump just like you did here and I even replaced the fuel pump relay and it didn't fix it.

+Ron S haven't yet. Towing it to the mechanic. Could be crank sensor or who knows what. I'm sure it's something simple

+Ron S I took it to a shop and they replaced the fuseable link near the battery. After reading info about that it feeds power to the ecu there. I'm hoping that's the issue.

yep. i wouldn't have figured that one out. cost me $350 for the shop to locate and replace but it runs GREAT again.

Appreciate the information. The pump on my 1987 325is was noisy on the test drive and a couple months later after doing quite a few things under the hood it's become pretty obvious it's the culprit of my lean fuel condition. Good to see it done from multiple perspectives, even something this simple can be messed up from a simple electrical misconfiguration a'la the other comments here. Gotta shell out for the OE or true OE equivalent that uses precision and gets it right. You learn pretty quick that parts are designed to go on and off a specific way and those little intricacies are important to the integrity of these old cars. Thanks

Thanks for commenting. Ya even the older cars can be tricky indeed. The underlying issue was the fusible link under the rear seat near the battery failed. I didn't even know it had one. Several hundred dollars later it was running great though!

can someone please answer my question. can a dirty fuel filter cause erratic RPM on cold start which disappears when the engine runs for a few minutes?

Good question. I don't know the answer on that but if it's been a while since the last filter change, just go ahead and change it. It's not too expensive. Just messy

Great job,what is the part number on the new filter? The 1993's and the 1994's E36 318i built till October 1993 use the smaller fuel filters, not the larger BMW 13321720102, Mann wk516, MAHLE kl35. Thanks

i reckon it's been a while, but do you remember if the big terminal is positive? or negative? I'm working on mine with an aftermarket pump and both terminals are the same size, but are clearly labeled.

It's been a while. I can't honestly recall. I think I looked at the original pump for the polarity symbols

the wrong polarity would just cause the pump to run in reverse it wouldnt cause any risk of fire.. its basically a sealed motor with an impeller inside a tin can.

Hi guys i have a problem with my e30 320i it starts but it won't rave it is giving a sound from the air cleaner the fuel pump is on the left side under the car , at first my fuel pump i use to hear it sounding now it is not sounding

Check fuses and wire to the fuel pump for power.

Does a lot of gas come out when removing the fuel pump? is there a way to clamp off or prevent gas from coming out?

yes you can clamp it. it's not too bad though.just have a container

Is that a fuel strainer (rusty lookin thang) left of the fuel filter? Why wouldn't you mention to replace that too?

That's a fuel accumulator. It doesn't strain any fuel. That's what the fuel filter does. Filters don't fail to strain elements but will fail to allow fuel to pass due to having too much contaminates. Technically at one point in life all fuel system parts will need to be replaced as other parts in vehicles but most people replace when necessary unless it's a maintenance item such as filters and fluids. 👍

my e30 325i keeps on stalling out. won't stay running. if i keep the pedal pressed, it just dies slowly. I have to keep revving it like a madman to keep the car from dying.

Check for fuseable link near battery. Mine did that also

@@RobDaman turned out to be this weird gear thingy. the camshaft belt sticker was on its cover. the gear has like a bunch of 500s on it.

@@royrodriguez4096 figured it out on mine, look for a small box in engine bay with a camshaft belt pictured. remove the cover. there should be a plastic gear there. ONLY ADJUST WHEN THE CAR IS OFF! lift the tiny wire holding the gear in place, and rotate it. experiment with it. mine liked the 500 mark towards one end.

Oh and it's fuse #11 for the fuel pump.

no. i think my fuel pump relay took a crap. I don't hear the pump priming. trying to locate it as my car has an engine swap. the whining noise is reduce. i forgot to put on the foam sleeve so i think that would have helped even more.

Oh that sucks. Its either the relay or the in-tank fuel pump. The relay is usually located on the driver side of the engine bay - even with a swap it should be somewhere in that area.

unfortunately the issue was the fuseable link under the rear seat. had to take it to a shop but $300 later it was found. lol
