In this episode, I restore the fuel tank from the 325i Sport. It looked as if all it needed was a clean, but after looking a bit closer, a lot of rust was hiding under the thick paint this fuel tank has.
Most of the tank was in great condition and didn't need touching. But as I was already painting the edges I thought a few more coats of paint wouldn't hurt.

if you glue the fuel level float in its highest position the fuel gauge will always say you have a full tank, therefore you'll never need to stop for fuel again, pro tip

Amazing job! I would have bend that little aluminum tube at home, filling it with sand, heating it and molding. 170 pounds is uber expensive for such a simple part!

I would have found a workshop, took the bits and a picture, then asked them to knock one up. For certain they'd be quick and cheap.

Do you know whats the difference between a 118i or 118is engine ( 4 cilinder engines) and the m3 evo engine? is there any similarities besides that?

I just bought a big cheap sponge cut it up to the same size as the ones I took of and glued on the new ones. But your restore it that won’t do for you

Not sure where the fuel tank sits in the chassis, but wouldn't those foam pads on top of the tank be put there for sound dampening?

It's just a contact buffer. you can use any type of (preferably flame resistant) foam.

On my E30 they were glued to the Chassis and held some wires. Maybe its also a flexible connection between Tank and Chassis. The big 63l Tank has Rubber around all bolts.

Gorgeous! Mercedes used a veryyyyyy similar fuel level sensor in their 80s and 90s cars. My Mercedes 190E and 190D both had to have theirs cleaned after I bought them. The wires are resistive and the float has contacts on it that run along the length of the wires. The sensor reports the resistance which causes the gauge to deflect and point to the proper marking in the instrument cluster. :) The wires are EXTREMELY delicate; any stretch will make the gauge inaccurate. The wires and float contact can be cleaned gently with carb cleaner. The MB float also had a separate set of contacts on the bottom which touched a pair of contacts on the bottom of the sensor housing. Those contacts completed the circuit for the low fuel warning light that was at the bottom end of the fuel gauge in the instrument cluster. If that light comes on you know you're running on the reserve capacity of the tank.

@@RestoreIt You've expertly restored several electronic things on this channel! :) You know more than the layman that's for sure. Liquid gasoline isn't flammable, so those contacts are either submerged in liquid gasoline all the time or they are always in contact with the sensor wire. 5 and 12 volt sensor circuits likely won't make a big spark if the circuit is interrupted. The air-fuel vapor mixture in a gas tank that's empty usually isn't ideal for burning either because there isn't enough oxygen. Anyway, modern fuel level sensors use a flat plane style with a stylus that sweeps over a semicircle of conductive traces. Also very little risk of spark or vapor ignition. :) Of course, diesel is MUCH safer than gasoline. You guys in Europe have many more diesel vehicles than we do in the US. Diesel is very difficult to ignite without a wick. 🤷 I loved my 1984 190D and I'll get another diesel car in the future.

at 2:50 i would recommend when undoing rusty nuts that you turn the nut back up clockwise again as if you were tightening it so that the rust does not get clogged the thread and reduces the risk of snapping the bolt. when the nut feels like its getting tight after loosening then turn it back a few turns, when tapping a new thread with a tap and die the procedure is generally 1 full turn 1 half turn back for a similar reason.

This is a really good video. The only thing was missing was to pressure leak test the fuel tank. On these E30 fuel tanks its very common for it to leak between the top and bottom halves of the tank.

Best thing to use as far as primer goes for that tank is epoxy primer. I need to make one of these plating setups! gonna start on my E30 soon

Wow, great job on the tank! I was surprised the inside of the tank looked that good. My first thought was to use a little heat on the cross-pipe; but what's life if we can't learn from a few random errors; lol. Using the c-clamp on the small brackets was smart! Always looking forward to your next vid.

The foam pads are for sound/vibration dampening. German engineering, it used to be the difference between normal and premium although now the rest of the car manufacturers have caught up. Fantastic work by the way 👍 glued to this channel

Great job, perfection as always. Painting is always the fun bit and satisfying to watch. That old pipe looked bi-metallic which would have always seized but the new one looks like it’s all the same material so shouldn’t have that problem again. Another part Done!

Paint your blinker fluid red to increase your horsepower/waterpump ratio in high RPM and decrease radiator lag in low RPM. Painting your brake discs increases acceleration up to 30% (22C degrees at sea level) by adding more torques per gallon. Also, change your firing order to all cylinders at once for a 600% increase of power. I hope this helps.

Look into Bilt Hamber Detox Gel, I use it for rust removal and its fantastic. Apply it,wrap part in clingfilm and leave for 24 hours

The part your're looking for are called C Clips or J Clips. They may not make that exact shape anymore , but you you should be able to find one to sit that slot. An Example is the Dorman part Part Number: 55157. I had a similar issue when I rebuilt my 69 Nova. I could not find an exact replacement, but I was able to find one that worked.

That spongy foam on the tank is for dampening. Large and relatively flat metal parts resonate at certain frequencies, and its to accomodate those vibrations. Nothing fancy, just keeps it from making noises

Had a look on RealOEM for your clips out of curiosity and I suspect that might be an unusual tank, either niche market or not original. All the varieties I saw had caged M8 nuts for the mount not open slots. I'd use copper-nickel brake piping for the cross tank connection, no corrosion. Good job though, I can watch hard work all day.

Thanks Shaun! This is defo the origional tank and in some diagrams I can see one of the clips, I've been told they are apart of the tank and if you want new ones, you'll have to get your hands on a new tank! which is kind of crazy to think. I guess no one ever takes them off. Thanks again.

I recently watched an episode from Trev's Blog about rust protection where he sprayed underbody chip protection and rust protection and then sprayed rust prevention wax into panels and over exposed parts. This might be a good last step for you when you assemble the car. Seeing as you have put so much effort into restoring everything I think they deserve the maximum protection available.

Try and get something like Ardrox AV-15 and coat the exposed metal parts of the tank. It sets semi hard and is great stuff. Will work better than anything you will find in the local motor factors that’s for sure

Restore It not to my knowledge. Most trucks don’t. Every vehicle I’ve seen just had the vent port and hole for the fuel pump. Super rare in my eyes. Korean and Japanese care don’t, just from what I’ve seen

FYI, you can rebuild that fuel sender if you have to in the future, you just need to determine the resistance of the wire and buy nichrome that matches. The FSM may have test information that lets you figure out what the specs should be. I did this on my ‘85 Mercedes and it’s worked great.

Restore It yep. It’s just nichrome wire, the float shorts across the two leads, so at the top there’s essentially no resistance, but at empty it’s higher.

Terrific video! Amazing attention to detail! I mean zinc plating the clips and brackets...most people would would just get new ones. And base/clear paint, on a gas tank-awesome! Very well done, I’m glad I found this channel, gonna check out more. My only question, why not check the tank for leaks, or did I miss that part? Just presume it’s still solid based on overall condition? I feel your pain on the crossover pipe cost, I once had to get a couple of bolts for my Jeep, dealership only part...the almost always stoic counter guy actually laughed out loud and said “wow that’s an expensive bolt” when he saw how much each bolt cost on the computer, $40-something each...and he sells ridiculously overpriced dealer parts all day long and has for many years. Had to have it lol. The burden of those who love old cars.

What type of spray gun would you recommend for applying paint, I'm looking for a decent one but not too expensive one as I'm not using it often, just for a one off spraying job. I've used cheap one's but they have failed very quickly, even had one just break while spraying.

I really like your Videos especially with E30, but in this case I think you had to buy a new Tank. The rust sits between the fold and squeezes the two metal sides. Sometimes it will get leaky. Also may little Rustparts fall into the tank and plugging your fuelpump. But that's only my opinion, keep going buddy! Greetings from Germany
