How to adjust the valves on a BMW M30 inline 6 cylinder engine, along with crush washer replacement which is towards the end of the video. Out of adjustment will cause engine ticking, poor performance, poor throttle response, idling issues, and poor fuel economy. This particular vehicle I am working with here today is a 1984 BMW 733i, equipped with a 3.2L inline 6 cylinder. A similar procedure may apply to other BMW engines of this generation as well. Disassembly procedure may vary between vehicles, as I know this engine was found in the 5 and 6 series as well. #BMW #BMWm30 #BMWe23

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-feeler gauges
-ratchet and socket set
-valve cover gasket
-4 aluminum crush washers (#11421252343 )
-10mm wrench
-allen keys
Procedure:
-remove the air box cover and air filter
-remove the rubber intake tube between the throttle body and air flow meter
-next remove the air flow meter with mounting bracket that is fastened to the air box
-to remove the bottom portion of the air box, you’ll have to unbolt the washer fluid tank to access the lower bolt for the air box base
-pull back the fresh air intake accordion breather tube for the air box, then lift it out
-unbolt the plastic case for the spark plug wires
-remove the faster which holds on a wiring harness clamp
-unbolt the brackets that braces the upper intake to the valve cover
-remove the valve cover, there will be various fasteners around the outside of the valve cover
-all the fasteners use a 10mm socket, you may need a mix between a shallow and deep socket, with the use of a 3” extension, all 3/8” drive
-I removed the spark plugs
-I used a dial indicator with a soft plastic tube stuck on the plunger, then the magnetic base is stuck on the exhaust manifold or whatever other steel components there is
-the valves must be closed in order to check their adjustment, we want the rockers sitting on the base circle or also known as heel of the lobe
-you can turn the engine over by the crank
-so instead I used the alternator pulley, using a socket on the pulley nut, make sure the belt is tight and then the engine can be turned over and select top dead center for cylinder number one
-using a feeler gauge, when the engine is cold or 95F or 35C or below, the clearance spec is 0.30mm or 0.012”
-if the engine is warm, 176F or 80C or above the clearance spec is 0.35mm or 0.014”, this is the same for both intake and exhaust valves
-to adjust the eccentric on the rocker, loosen the 10mm nut that locks it into place with a wrench
-BMW does have a specific tool, but you can use a 3/32” allen key, stick that in the hole and rotate accordingly
-keep the gauge leaf in place, then tighten the lock nut and recheck
-moving onto the next cylinder, again turn over the engine, there is no need to do extra work and go to the second cylinder back, instead go by the firing order which is 1-5-3-6-2-4 starting from the radiator
-therefore we’re going with the second last cylinder. Setup the dial indicator again so we can see top dead center
-these bolts are known to loosen up, then oil pressure is lost on the oil rail and some of the valve train will not get lubrication
-remove the banjo bolts and old crush washers
-the old crush washers, they cannot be reused
-I’m doing something a little different here to prevent these bolts from loosening, I’m using thread locker
-oil must be cleaned from the threads so the threadlocker sticks
-in the threaded holes I used the degreaser sprayed on q-tips
-install a crush washer under the oil rail, then another on the banjo bolt
-apply a medium grade thread locker to the banjo bolts, just enough to cover the threads
-the torque spec is 8 to 10 foot pounds, for this I am using an inch pound torque wrench because it’s such a low value, to convert this, it’s 96 to 120 inch pounds

Great video! I've just swapped M30 engine in my E21 and for piece of mind I'll do the same preventative maintenance.

What size socket are you using on the Alternator pulley? I'd like to turn the engine the same way but I need to purchase the correct socket.

Where can you buy & cost of the E23 Camshaft (one Nose is worn)? Where do you turn (which directions) the motor to get to TDC?

Im getting ready to do this soon.. when it comes to the dial indicator, how do I set that up correctly? Based on its values, what am I looking for exactly when I am going top dead center? It looks like the values differ w/ each cylinder when you are going through the order. Also, to confirm, the 10mm bolts on the rockers can be hand tightened and be called good? Thanks for the video!

There is no specific value for the indicator. The only thing it finds is a maximum reading, indicating TDC. So once it's inserted in the spark plug hole, the piston comes up, as the plunger on the indicator is pushed, the value increases on the dial. So if the value maxes out at 0.256" and then starts to drop again, we're going away from TDC. The 10mm eccentric nuts can be tightened by hand as it's a little tricky to get a torque wrench in there. You can use a torque wrench with a "crowfoot" style attachment, however an adjustment calculation needs to be made as the pivot point has changed, affecting the final torque value. If I remember correctly, the nut torque specs are 10nm.

High mileage cams usually have a dip in the base circle where the rocker slaps it coming off the ramp; I usually rotate the engine while feeling for the exact spot with the largest clearance at this location for each valve and set the valve there. I've never bothered with a dial indicator or removed the plugs (another pitfall.) I have had to sacrifice my lunch hour to warranty noisy valves for angry customers, done by other techs who simply set the valves in the middle of the base circle and took off for lunch.. Also- yes, you will likely be tightening the eccentric clamping bolts on the rockers by hand. They are 6mm nuts which have a 10mm hex. Get a feel for what 8-10 Nm feels like, and go through them all twice when you're done, so that you catch any that have relaxed.

Runs absolutely perfect now! Smooth idle, responsive throttle, but I can't really say if it's any quieter as I have a slight exhaust leak lol.

Hello..1984 733i 3.2 question. Can the 3.5 engine, same type, cam go into the 3.2??my cam in the 3.2 is junk from loose banjo bolts, rockers and one valve spring to..ugh..have a 3.5 head and the cam n stuffs are great. Can I just swap the 3.5 cam into the 3.2..

Hello, I got no reply from anyone. Mine is a 1986 735i. My Camshaft with one worn top lobe (3:30) is worn. I too can't find Camshaft or for that matter many parts from these models of E23. Yours is making tick, tick noise? If Camshaft not available, do they make something to add onto the Rocket Arm (3:23) so it comes closer to worn lobe?

Hey, I will be tackling this job while also replacing the spark plugs with Bosch WR9LS, which should be the best/correct plugs for a stock M30B32 like we have. Do you know what spark plug socket is needed? I believe it is 5/8. I'm currently looking at Spark Plug Socket 5/8" Gearwrench 80402, but unsure if it will fit. Would you be able to confirm your spark plug socket size for me?

Cams are a pain on this motor. Hold up the rockers as necessary when sliding it in, don't force it or you'll break a rocker.

What to torque the spark plugs too? I tried looking for a video on spark plugs on your channel couldn’t find it, is snug an 1/4 turn on? Will be ordering the repair manual.

Hi guys,is it okay to use copper crush washers in place of the aluminum ones?
@ChrisJones-si4eb
@ChrisJones-si4eb 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe you'll get away with it.. but that cam oiler pipe is hollow and crushes easily. Also the banjo bolts can elongate where they are weak at the holes. Copper is harder than aluminum and may not crush properly. Just get aluminum ones and loctite the bolt threads.

Only if the engine is above 176F or 80C for both the exhaust and intake valves. This is directly sources from the Bentley repair manual.

The feeler gauge should be able to move between the eccentric on the rocker and the top of the valve.
