Ben Elms aka Dr Compost shows you how to use the Bokashi fermenting system to compost your food waste. Once the bucket food waste has been set aside for a week, dig it in to your garden to fertilise and increase the biology of your soil. Better for the planet, better for your plants.

Another option to add, if you're finding it hard to dispose of the matter in the winter time, is to buy a very large container (like a dustbin) and tip half a bag of compost into it, then add the bokashi mix, then top with the remainder of the compost bag. Leave for 2 weeks before you turn it to use it. Alternatively, if you get a very big bin (on wheels?) you can keep doing this through the winter time, and you'll find you have the most perfect nutritious compost for use, come the Spring/Summer.

It's 3 yrs on here...I was just wondering what I do with the bokashi compost over winter in Canada. Can I mix it half and half with soil and store it for months in bins in my garage? Or do I keep the bokashi compost separate from soil until 2 weeks before spring planting? Little foggy on timelines...is there such thing as mixing it too soon?

You don't need to buy expensive bokashi mixes and buckets! You are just doing fermentative instead of putrefactive composting your food. People have done this for centuries to preserve foods like cabbage, pickles, eggs, you name it. The only difference is you add a second fungal saprobe step to make soil. To start, you just need an anaerobic environment and acidophilus bacteria. Sprinkle a capsule of acidophilus probiotic from a healthfood store into a single 5 gallon bucket with a Gamma Seal lid, add food (meats, etc. are okay), and screw on the lid. You can add more food from a smaller kitchen bucket every day. If it smells like vinegar when you open the lid, it's working. A single bucket allows fluid buildup that surrounds the food and increases the bacterial breakdown- you don't need to drain it away. Whenever you add more food and seal the bucket just roll it on its side a few times to redistribute the acidophilus rich fluids. When you've filled the bucket, leave it closed for 2 weeks, then bury just under a patch of healthy soil for a month or more. Try to leave some fluid in the bottom of the bucket to innoculate the next batch. Meanwhile, fungus in the soil will permeate the predigested food scraps and complete the transformation into good compost. If you don't have good soil with saprobic fungi, fill a bucket from a healthy forest and sprinkle a little of this soil on top of the fermented food each time you bury it. You can later dig up the compost or leave it and let the nearby plants benefit. Bokashi became a money making scheme that retarded its introduction but it is really very simple and you don't need to buy anything to make it work.

Thank you for this video. I only recently heard of Bokashi and I'm very interested in it. I have been researching the different styles of buckets and how to use each. Thank you for also showing what to do with your completed Bokashi, especially for the winter months. Our ground will freeze solid for a good 4 to 8 weeks some years, and because of the slope of our yard, I can't reach my compost pile if there is snow and ice on the ground. But, I think, with some planning, we do have one area, that if I plan ahead and save some leaves from fall in bags and dig a trench a head of time, it may work. Have a great today! Catherine

Just my opinion. I am not spending R300 a month on a product like Bokashi. It's ridiculous. Not even R110 a month, which I paid for a small 2L of the powder. I have also done some research. I would rather go to my local Hardware store to get sawdust for free and add that to dog poop or other wet food. It works just as well. It's all about the carbon content of what you add. Add a bit of sand to it to add bacteria...there you go.

it says you can put teabags in, but MANY teabags actually contain plastic used to seal the bag. Please know this and think of switching to a bag free version using a tea diffuser or a bag specifically designed without plastic. I have a question about the liquids (milk, oil?): can you instead put those into HOT compost system?

How about dumping the bucket into worm farm for further processing? Meats, oils and such are generally not suitable for indoor vermicomposting (smell), but does this fermenting beforehand prevent that?
@bokashiliving3173
@bokashiliving3173 5 жыл бұрын
Yes you can, and plenty of people do that. Take some care to introduce it gradually to your worms. If you notice changes to your worm bin, then dial back and add slightly less bokashi pre-compost. Take a look here for more info bokashiliving.com/bokashi-and-wormeries/

Just throw your compost directly on top of your garden and have a few cats for the mice/rat problem. 🤣 Heck, you could even just bury the stuff daily in a much smaller hole, also makes you be outside for some fresh air once a day.

Instead of burying or adding to compost, would it be suitable to dump it in the chicken pen as supplemental feed?
@alexandraabraham6698
@alexandraabraham6698 5 жыл бұрын
Probably not, the acidic smell and taste may make it inedible for the chickens. Also, if you have included egg shells, be careful, because this could prompt them to start eating their own eggs. Seriously. . You could wait a couple of weeks, and let the bucket sit for a fortnight..... There's no harm in trying though. It won't harm the chickens to see what they do...

Too much fluid upsets the biological microbial balance of the mix. It's not the milk that is the problem, it's the excess fluid.

@alexandraabraham6698
@alexandraabraham6698 5 жыл бұрын
Have you experienced this problem? If yes, you may not have buried the bokashi stuff deep enough. It hellps to dig a trench at least a spade-and-a-half deep, then even the bokashi stuff out, and cover with the removed soil. Leave for 1 week, then turn it. It should be broken down enough even then, to not attract animals. In the winter, this can take longer though.....

Bokashi composting (fermentation) means there won't be a release of gases, and when you bury the pre-compost (after 2 weeks of bokashi fermenting in the bucket), it then breaks down in the soil quickly.

@@alexandraabraham6698 thanks for the message. There's not enough liquid to drain daily. It's cloudy, and smells of bin juice. The bucket smelt fine when layering it up, but now it's been fermenting for a week it smells bad. It took me 20 days to fill it before that.
@alexandraabraham6698
@alexandraabraham6698 5 жыл бұрын
@@EmuMan44 I have had my bucket filling for just over 3 weeks, and not a single drop of juice. However, that isn't a problem, apparently, so I'm not worried. It is however, extremely important to press the refuse down very, very firmly, to eliminate air pockets. I actually use my entire top body weight to apply pressure, in order to eliminate as much air as possible. I also don't rely on the lid alone, to seal out the air. I cover the food/refuse, with a thick plastic layer. As I said, I've been at it for 23 days now, and my bin is 2/3 full, because of the applied pressure. You may find it's the air pockets which are creating a bad odour. In your shoes, I'd dig a trench, get rid of this batch, cover it well with soil, (or put it in a normal compost bin) and rinse out the container thoroughly, then start again. We're all going to mess up at some time. It's not the end of the world. Just have another go. ;0)

It isn't a waste of time at all. The composition of the refuse has changed organically/biologically, and can be used far more quickly than the compost in your compost bin. It is the fastest and easiest method and my preference, I cannot agree it is a waste of time. I have a worm compost which is great but slow, and had very little success with other composting systems for various reasons. I am a vegan, my worm farms can't cope with large quantities of food. Getting compost within a month to six weeks is a very quick solution to achieving a compost and disposing of daily food waste including meat, fish and dairy which other methods aren't suitable options.
