Despite its challenges relating to safety and downtime, welding is still the most recognized method of bonding. In this video we are showing #howtobondmetalbrackets to a metal structure without welding. We also show what happens to the internal lining of this tank when we use welding side by side with cold bonding.
Find the product testing results in the Product Specification PDF:
www.belzona.com/en/products/1...
www.belzona.com/en/focus/compo...
In this short video, you will learn how to successfully bond using a solvent free, 100% solids and #fastcuring Belzona composite material and you will uncover why #coldbonding is fast becoming the method of choice across a range of industries.
As you can see at the start of the video, the tank lining stated to burn during the welding process. For that reason, the application was terminated. Other issues commonly encountered with welding include:
1. HAZ and stress relieving
2. Cavities behind weld patches and brackets
3. Bi-metallic corrosion
4. Existing heat sensitive coatings/linings
In the next part of the video, you will see a simple demonstration of Belzona cold bonding technology and uncover some of the key benefits this method boasts in comparison to welding.
Materials Used:
To bond this bracket, we used Belzona 1212 and Belzona 9111 (Cleaner Degreaser)
Read more about these materials on our website:
www.belzona.com/en/products/10...
How-to Guide:
Step 1: Prepare the entire bond area of the tank wall and the bracket using a grinder.
Step 2: Mask off and thoroughly clean bond area.
Step 3: Mix and apply Belzona 1212 with a stiff bristled brush in a thin layer to the tank wall pressing hard to ensure the material fills the profile.
For more information on how to correctly mix this product please view the IFU.
www.belzona.com/ViewFile.aspx?...
Step 4: Apply the Belzona material to the entire area of the bracket creating a peak in the centre.
Step 5: Bond the bracket onto the tank with force making sure Belzona material is squeezed out of the sides.
Step 6: With an applicator, remove the excess material to ensure an aesthetically pleasing finish once the masking tape is removed.
During this application, thermal imaging inside the tank showed temperatures of 27°C (80°F) which is safe for tank lining and its contents. In comparison, a welding application reaches minimum temperatures or 1600°C between (2912°F).
Key benefits of Belzona cold bonding technology:
• There is no risk of sparks or electrical hazards and no need for hot work permits.
• Fast and simple in-situ application without the need for special equipment makes cold bonding ideal for emergency repairs and challenging application areas, where access is restricted.
• There is no need for on-site machining, stress relieving and post weld heat treatment.
• Cold bonding adhesives can conform to irregular shapes and substrates, filling the void between the surfaces. This ensures 100% contact which enhances load bearing capability.

*Where is the load testing!?* We made a mistake and we’re sorry about that. This video was created to demonstrate the benefits of Belzona 1212 as a cold applied alternative to welding. The rig used to demonstrate this was not designed for load-bearing testing. This video’s popularity has surpassed our wildest expectations and we’re so grateful for that but of course, we now see that the load-bearing capabilities of Belzona 1212 are so important to showcase. We are working on a follow-up video to demonstrate what we’re capable of but in the meantime, we have some other resources you may find useful. We have hundreds of useful case studies of real-world Belzona cold bonding applications available here: khia.belzona.com/en/search-results.aspx?q=cold%20bonding#gsc.tab=0&gsc.q=cold%20bonding&gsc.page=1 For Engineers you can also find relevant product specification data for Belzona 1212 on our website here: www.belzona.com/viewfile.aspx?id=55723 If bond strength, durability and technical material characterization are what you are really after Belzona 7311 might be of more interest: www.belzona.com/viewfile.aspx?id=66071 Thank you all so much for your feedback and we look forward to incorporating it into our future videos.

Very interesting indeed. Still looks like $80 of “JB Weld” in a can. To bad you did not let it fully cure, then start hanging weights on, to the point of failure. We all know enough weight would eventually cause separation. It would be cool. Let’s say the contact area is 6” X 6” (15.24 cm X 15.24 cm) = 35 sq in (232.26 sq cm). If properly prepared, if the bonding agent holds 180 lbs. per sq. Inch, it could hold up to 1080 lbs. As shown, priceless is working on the outside of a coated tank, like galvanized to glass lined like a tank style water heater. That is something!

Brazing is better than welding when it comes to thin-walled thank like that, but even brazing tends to warp the thin metal, while cold bonding does not, so for areas that do not undergo extreme temperature swings, cold bonding is better. But for areas that get extremely hot, then extremely cold, brazing is superior to cold bonding in the long run.

We always recommend to review the individual product data sheet where information regarding the specific electrical properties for each product can be found. Hello and thank you for your question! Our products adhere to different substrates, including steel and aluminum. You must ensure that the preparation of the surface is adequate, the substrate must be clean of grease / residue and needs to be roughened to ensure an optimal bond. The advantage of using Belzona to bond dissimilar metals is that in most cases our products prevent electrochemical corrosion between them, which could be a significant problem if welding is employed. Please contact your local Belzona representative to discuss further specifics of your situation: www.belzona.com/en/contact.aspx

Hello Mr. Rautela, our products are able to bond to most metals as long as a proper surface preparation is performed on the surfaces to be bonded. Additionally, Belzona materials are excellent electrical insulators, which enables them to prevent galvanic corrosion by isolating the dissimilar metals. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact a Belzona representative in your area: www.belzona.com/en/about/disfinder.aspx. Please let us know should you require any further assistance. Thank you for your question. Belzona Team.

Thank you for your question! This document (PSS: www.belzona.com/viewfile.aspx?id=55723) provides information on various tests done with Belzona 1212 - the metal composite used to bond plates in this video. The main benefit of the cold bonding technique - no need for hot work, which is extremely important when the application is done on tanks containing flammable liquids, or on tanks that have internal coatings, or in spaces where hot work (welding, brazing) is not permitted. If that epoxy takes a whack with a hammer, will it just break off ? How about lifting capacity compared to the weld ?
@belzona
@belzona 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Mr, Debest! Thank you for your question. The values obtained from the Pull Off Adhesion ASTM D4541 and Shear Adhesion ASTM D1002 (which you can find in the product's product specification sheet: www.belzona.com/viewfile.aspx?id=55723) can be used to calculate the size and number of bonding areas needed to handle the weight and stresses on your cold bond application. When applying a safety factor of 10-1 for example, if the calculated weight to be supported is 300 lbs, the size and number of plates will be designed to hold 3,000 lbs. The higher the bond area, the higher the weight the system can safely hold. The epoxy product is not easily broken off by impacts from a hammer, an excessive amount of force and stress concentration (by the use of chisels for example) would be needed to damage the product. See this case study below for more information: khia.belzona.com/en/view.aspx?id=7476 or the product page: www.belzona.com/en/products/1000/1212.aspx If you have any further questions, you are welcome to contact our Technical department at tkl@belzona.com. Vertical welding is supposed to go uphill, bottom up. Your weld has no penetration and is still burning the other side. Squirt gun might be the wrong tool. TIG offers more control. Copper backing or solar flux can help mitigate burn thru as well. The only time I would think to glue something like this would be on a fire or explosion hazard.
