I wished you showed us how the machine was set up.

The bar is centered with the cat's paws at the top where there is no cylinder wear, the cutter is installed after the centering. The cutter is set up in the micrometer tool for the bore size. There are 5 sets of cat's paws from small to big depending on the bore size.

First job out of HS in ‘64, Eastern Engine in Brooklyn, NY .. learned with Van Norman BB... looks like same one...also used Kwikway but preferred van Norman...bored every thing from a Brockway to a flat head ...wet sleeves, heavy wall sleeves etc...even used the infamous “sucker-outer on truck engines still under the hood...Thanks for posting. Brings back some great memories

i wish you was close by, got my cylinder in the dealer service getting bored but I been waiting since 3 weeks :(
@figibloom10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the good demonstration. I was curious about how you centered the boring bar in the cylinder. Does that boring bar have a three finger centering mechanism built in or something like that to get perfectly centered? Also how does the boring bar mount to the engine block? Does it have an anchor that slips in to another cylinder to tighten down? Well thanks for the video and have a good day.

another method used is putting a dial indicator on the tooling bit and turning it around till the gauge reads the least run out- then attach the cutting bit. Not sure if thats how the norman works but u get the idea-

Thanks for the video!! Always wanted to know how this was done :)

Honing is similar but you dont really cut material, you shave it off and leaves a fine finish. To bore and engine .040 you really want to cut it at .038 and with the hone you take off the last .002 It also provides the crosshatch pattern so that the ring will seat properly when the engine is started. Look for videos. theres a bunch on honing

do you know where i can get the expandable jaws for the van norman 777 theres 4 off them
@1AMERICANWORKER10 жыл бұрын
I built a similar boring set-up with an automatic feed I copied from a mini lathe. The Van Norman is ok for a street engine but for a racing engine you need to locate and hold position from the main bearing center line. My machine has a massive bar that clamps in by the main caps. Holes in the bar hold a pilot for the boring bar that is centered with dial indicators. My machine is overkill for most jobs as the set-up time is considerable but for my racing engines I get the accuracy of a super expensive machine with a homemade one cobbed together in my back yard machine shop.
@dantheman19989 жыл бұрын
I was thinking of a machine very similar to this! I was thinking of a plate that bolts to the mains with a hole centered on the bore for the boring bar to travel. Yours is probably a much better idea. I would LOVE to see a pic of it or a movie in action!
@1AMERICANWORKER9 жыл бұрын
dantheman1998 At the end of the season my son and I both decided to run in the crate motor classes and sold the machine to help pay for the G.M. 602 motors. 602 is the part # for these factory sealed 350 engines.

boring is cutting of cylinder to match piston size . honing is done after cutting/boring and but a cross hatching pattern on cylinder wall .
@matthewstorm51882 жыл бұрын
Both boring and honing cut a cylinder to match piston size. Boring can cut a whole lot more material, so boring is used to cut away the bulk of the material. Boring also restores straightness and roundness to a cylinder that may be tapered and out of round due to wear. Honing, on the other hand, is a finishing operation which generates the proper crosshatch pattern for oil retention. This operation DOES require the removal of material. Therefore, a cylinder is bored to a little less than final diameter. And the remainder of the material is removed by honing.

@motogpracebikes7 жыл бұрын
Besides not showing the set up for people to see, you didn't engage the ' catspaws ' until the cutter was way below the deck. As soon as they were coming close to the deck they should've been already engaged with the sidewalls of the cylinder!!

@supersevenn11 жыл бұрын
actually....honing is a mix between scrathcing and polishing. like a brillo pad does. gives the bore a fine smooth finish with a crosshatch scrathcing pattern. kinda hard to explain really. lol
