An excellent video. As an adult beginner, who is trying to learn violin on his own, this video has opened my eyes to the physics of the movements. While other videos try to explain things based on experience there is a mechanical explanation for every single tip here. I am now able to comprehend the sources of the different sounds I make and can work on improving the overall quality of my sound

Just curious how your learning is going. I am also an adult beginner who started taking lessons about 7 months ago.

@@vagabond197979 When I started out, I put a challenge on my self to go as far as possible on my own. I am now confident in replaying many of the songs I hear. Of course after about a year of playing I have now reached a plateau of what I can accomplish on my own. Trying out classical pieces proves a lot more difficult than what I have been doing for so long, therefore I am considering starting lessons as well. Hopefully I will transition swiftly. What about your development? Do you feel comfortable with the violin?

@@vagabond197979 as far as skills go I can play on two strings when necessary and I feel confident in my vibrato ( finger vibrato, I am a mechanic and have built very strong but not flexible wrist. Thankfully my fingers are strong and big enough to change the sound of the note depending on how much strength I put on the tip of my fingertips.)

@@mirutosudesu1793 Well, here's what I have learned so far: Violin is such a technical and detailed instrument that having a good teacher has been invaluable to my development. They can watch your playing and know exactly where you need to improve and how to go about it. I have taken it seriously and have averaged about an hour a day of practice. Right now I'm practicing whole bows and playing at the frog which I'm finding really tough. Anyway, I would highly recommend finding a good teacher to build off what you've already done. Best of luck!

Bent thumb is SUPER important for bow technique - I also emphasize it in many of my videos and luckily there are many ways to develop the flexibility while also being stable. Great demo :)

Well....This was very refreshing. 20 years ago my teacher had my hand so rigid that I couldn't progress very well. I remember now that when I actually listened to myself play by myself I was always so much more relaxed and played better. The problem was I noticed my wrist and fingers were free to work, so I corrected myself as per her instructions and I went back to not progressing. Thanks

I used a Baroque bow for a month. then When I went back to the tourte Bow, I understood how it works and how to utilize it's shape better. However; I personally believe the Baroque bow is superior except for the inability to weigh into the string on certain pieces

Thank you for your excellent videos; I just spent several hours watching many of them and learned how many things I don't know! But there is one thing I see in your playing but have not seen discussed in any video. When you complete a long upbow and the bow is nearly to the frog, your wrist is strongly bent forward. Then, at the moment you reverse the bow, your wrist almost instantly reverses the direction of its bend to a backward bend, then begins to reverse again, much more slowly this time. If you have a video that discusses how and when to do this, I'd love a link. If not, I suggest that this would make an excellent topic for a video. Thank you!

Yes but I noticed that when you do long bows at the frog your fingers seem to push up a fraction by straightening and then you curve on the way down and then straighten again. I get a really clunky sound if I do that. So I have just got use to straighten to start the down and not move up first.
@violinlounge
@violinlounge 2 жыл бұрын
If that works for you, it's great! People do this slightly differently.

When I'm right at the frog I will straighten my fingers and this moves the bow down smoothly and I curve My fingers it moves the bow upwards. Is this wrong when I try it the other way I get a lot more noise. I also use my technique to play fast notes smoothly in the tip first qtr of bow and half way down bow feels a lot more natural to curve on the way up to the frog and release on the way down. Thanks alot

During bow changes, am I intentionally moving my fingers or just letting them move?
@violinlounge
@violinlounge 2 жыл бұрын
You might train the movements intentionally, but in the end they move along with the bow strokes
@Harri_James
@Harri_James 11 ай бұрын
If anything more confused. Even just holding a pencil or nothing my fingers cant's and done move that way... Thought the issue might be that I'm left handed by my left hand doesn't move that way either. Like I don't under how you can straighten your fingers with them in bow hold and I literally just don't understand how to attempt the second thing...
@violinlounge
@violinlounge 11 ай бұрын
It's very normal that this doesn't work out right away. It needs practice and finding out a hold that works for you. Maybe check out my bowing warm up www.violinlounge.com/warmup or do the violin bowing bootcamp that teaches this step by step and has many exercises without the bow to prepare: academy.violinlounge.com/violin-bowing-bootcamp-enrollment/
