We don't really even cut our horses' manes in Finland, we let them be natural looking (or we don't care, some do but i think most of us don't). Something like our national horse Finnhorse has REALLY long and thicc manes we braid them along the neck and not like normally you would. One single braid going from top of their head to their withers. We actually had an "epidemic" where a young girl had broken into a stable and cut horses' manes into English style and everyone was so upset 😂😂

(I can only speak behalf of Lapland) Actually in Finland we don't have to worry about those kind of things my sister owns her own stable and yes she has security system on it but a lot of Finns don't bother bc it's pretty rare that someone would break in and do something...(English isn't my strongest language so I'm sorry about that)

native breeds (the ones with really nice hair) are natural but others that are usually too thin to do plaits from top to bottom get the bun plaits

Really enjoyed this Olivia! As an eventer I simply rushed plaits for years, once I’m back riding I’ve decided to stick with dressage until my ankle strengthens up, so I’ll definitely be practising plaiting! I’ve never had the patience for threading I usually band them but my younger boy has a habit of shaking and scratching plaits out while I’m tacking up so thanks for the demo on threading made sense to me and your way seems easier than the way I was told lol so will definitely give it a try! 🧵 x

Hi. I live in the States & it’s interesting to see the difference between how we plait & u plait. We do long flat braids the lay against the neck. When we get to the end we fold them under & tie off. They’re much closer together. I’ve never seen anyone use thread here & sew them but doesn’t mean people don’t do it. We use yarn tied & braided in & pull the braid under & up. We also use bands. Very interesting video. I wonder what people over here would think if I showed up with English plaits. 😄 Notice I use the word braid as well. We also in general thin or pull our manes more often I believe. I do. It’s the way I was taught but other people may not. Wonderful video

Here in Belgium we learn to platter the mane left! I even remember a friend of mine saying that’s in some sort of competition rules when i did the braids on the right side. We were young, it’s not true ( or not anymore anyways?) but maybe it used to be a rule and that’s why

I'm not very experienced with horses and this may be a stupid question, but when you pull a band out of a horses mane like that does it cause any discomfort or pain for the horse? Also, great tutorial, simple to follow and great instructon.

I have a mane problem/question. I have a Arabian quarter horse gelding who has a part of his mane in Mohawk and it’s a patch between mane that’s long. What should I do?? We’re gonna be showing him on show jumping next year and I’m really stuck on what to do. I do not have a trainer because we keep him at my friends who have 16 other horses.

My mare had a section of her mane rub off from her blanket this winter. I was really unsure what to do for show season because it had grown back a bit, but not enough to braid, so I gave her a mohawk! It looks SO much better than before, and on show day, I didn't have to do anything to it! She still had a bit of a kink in the hair that laid flat, so I straightened it with a flat iron and threw some human mohawk gel in it. It looks amazing and really makes her neck look cresty and rounded. 10/10 recommend trying!

I recommend using a crop or a whip and just rub it on your horses butt and work your way up towards the ears. And if you ride and while tacking him up rub his neck and work your up towards his mane. And reward good behavior. Letting your horse know he is doing the right thing he is going to be happier. Take your time don’t rush. Also tying a plastic bag on a whip/crop and rub it up and down him should also help. I’m no professional but this has worked for me.

I totally understand but it’s maybe a bit harsh to instantly say the video operator needs to be changed. Because I don’t think it is easy to film a great point a view of the mane while Olivia’s platting. In the stable it was probably also quite dark which makes it harder and it could also be the camera not working properly... it happens...
