Great info man. One thing I like to say about the brakes on a bike is "brakes can stop a huge load, but they cant stop an abrupt load" apply the brakes gently at first.

Don’t trust engine braking to much tho. You need to be able to use only front and rear brake to slow the bike down in a panic. Ideally you should learn to use all three in perfect unison. Been practicing it a lot myself and it really is the best way to stop

To really learn how to stop, I took the rear brake peddle off for a month. (This was in 84 when I realized I needed to really use the front brake, which is 70ish % of braking power) It was a little unnerving at first. But at the end of the month I was totally comfortable. I used a Metzler me33 Lazer front tire which 'howled' when it was dragging slightly under high braking force. You could feel this dragging force also. It let me know I was at maximum braking force just before tire lockup. The rear brake dose help.....but the front brake is what saves your life. I rarely ride now, but I noticed I mostly don't even use the rear brake on my 740 pound bike. If you don't have anti lock brakes, you better learn how to use that front brake!

Only use the front brake very carefully when moving slow. I personaly only use the back brake. Using the front when your handlebars are turned is a good way of layong down your bike if you accidentally pull to hard.

@@winstonjr55 no question. My comment was just targeted on these very slow speed maneuvres where you tip your bike over the front wheel. For all normal riding front and back combined is the way to go...with the front doing the real work.

Nobody seems to talk about 'setting up the brakes' that is applying enough pressure to the front brakes, so that the front exhaust dips and stays down. I do this in 'yellow' or 'red' situations, so I can then apply more pressure and with less time.

@SpunkyBoyy
@SpunkyBoyy Жыл бұрын
I always do as well, some people think it’s bad for the bike, but that’s not true at all..I do it all the time..it won’t hurt the engine, these bikes can take a pounding. That’s what they are made to do, but the only motorcycle u really shouldn’t engine brake for long periods of time…is on a 2 stroke motorcycle, because when u blip the throttle the oil in the gas is what lubricants the piston, but just about any other motorcycle doesn’t do any harm to the bike.
@joejones2847
@joejones2847 Жыл бұрын
It’s not bad for the bike it’s bad for people behind you who don’t know you’re braking or slowing. There’s no light attacked to down shifting so people behind you are not shaving 20mph as fast as you so make it a habit to barely touch the front brake when you downshift to let the group behind you know you’re slowing. Just touch it enough to make the light come on

Funny, we learn it differently in Switzerland. For hatd braking: Short good squeese of the front to compress your fork, followed by a slight release and then constant pressure build. All combined with rear brake just enough as to not lock up. For normal braking slow bildup of pressure but not starting with the rear...front always takes the lead.

@Image-X
@Image-X Жыл бұрын
@massimohack1367 No, it doesn’t. Almost ALL of your stopping power resides in the front brake. It’s simple physics. You can only apply so much rear brake before it will lock up or ABS kicks in. Not much brake at all. This is because weight bias is to the front and there is no weight on the rear. Many racers will not even touch their rear brake a single time during a race.
@Image-X
@Image-X Жыл бұрын
@massimohack1367I am a former licensed roadracer and have been riding for 35 years. Of course many racers will use the rear brake but they aren’t getting much braking from it. They are using it to settle the chassis and a few other reasons that you won’t understand.
