I absolutely loved your vermiculite trick! I tried it and the smell is def better!!!

Man I've been breeding banded crickets for 4 5 months now and have THOUSANDS!! ur the 1 that gave me the idea to breed my own feeders!! I owe u big time!! I've literally watched every single 1 of ur insect breeding videos over and over. Plus dun my own research of course. I haven't had a 1 of any of my breeders or feeders die on me.

I used to keep crickets years ago. I put peat in the bottom of a ten gallon tank and planted ryegrass in it and just misted occasionally. Once the ryegrass started growing I had to cut it with scissors to keep it from growing out of the tank but once the crickets started breeding and the population exploded, they took care of mowing the grass for me so all that I had to do was mist the tank to keep the moisture levels up. Super low maintenance, no smell and no feeding at all. I only needed adults so there was no need to separate the pinheads, I just let them grow up and picked out adults as I needed them. I kept mice on peat as well and there was no smell from them either. The only problem I had with keeping crickets this way was the sheer numbers of them. I didn't need anywhere near as many as it produced so occasionally I would just release excess adults outside.

To limit cannibalism, feed some protein. Some use cat food, but I hate the smell. But I prefer a Barley & Lentil mix 1/2 cup Hulled Barley 1/4 cup of anytime of Lentil Soak the hulled barley in water overnight before cooking as you would dried beans. It will cut the cooking time in half. At this point, the barley will take about 30 minutes to cook, while the lentils take about 20. In order to avoid getting two pots dirty, just simmer the barley for 10 minutes and then add lentils into the same pot. Make certain there is a few inches of water covering them. After the barley and lentils are fully cooked, simply drain off the water and let cool.. put in a storage container and feed a small spoonful along with a slice of either raw carrot, or sweet potato, or orange etc.. .. The extra proteins will help turn off their cannibalism. Lentils are a legume, so naturally they have many of the chains of amino acids that are proteins, but so do some grains like Barley(46 gms protein _ 1 Cup) you can substitute with Oatmeal, but not as much h protein.

I now am using the larger black crickets - much noisier, but don’t jump out so quickly, and so I am told much more nutricional because of their protein content. Story is that I wasn’t planning on breeding, but since I changed to the darker breed, something strange was happening to the thick pad of 5 cotton wool I leave soaked in water (it keeps wet for a few days, and also helps keep the veggies fresh, by leaving them on top, or placing the stalks inside the wet pads). This new breed eat all veggies like crazy - never any left over, like with the common crickets I had before. When I changed the cotton wool I noticed it was as if it has been “picked at”. I looked closer at the new one I’d put in, and low and behold there were about 5 females laying their eggs in it. I rescued the old pads from the garbage ;) peeled off two layers, and there they were... hundreds of eggs. I watched this video to know what to do next - I think I’ve got it :) I don’t use vermiculite - i actually use a hand vacuum cleaner which cleans the bottom up in 2 mins - extra careful not to suck a cricket up ;) For food they have two bottle caps of powdered cricket food, a little tray of bee pollen (which they love - and keeps them super healthy as a feeder) and fresh veggies which they gobble up. I have very very few deaths, so I guess I’m doing something right! Thanks for your helpful video :)

You can always put the crickets in the refrigerator for 30 mins. This causes them to become sedate. People say they die from the cold... maybe eventually but I've put them in for as much as 4 hours and within about 5-10 minutes at room temperature they start to do the Lazarus thing.

Heya! I know I haven't been about for the live streams but heck I'm Canadian so that's early in the morning. Ok, ok, I will be honest that half the time I've been playing Elder Scrolls Online. I have thought of you guys though. Now crickets are something we are able to have here, not dubias though, and the trick with the vermiculite sounds great. I've seen other cricket breeders use a mesh at the top of the egg laying container, just big enough for the female to get her ovipositor into the soil, but not so big that the risk of them eating up all the eggs is high. I've also heard that after a week is when you should replace the egg laying containers, not 2 weeks. And I've done research on breeding crickets and roaches. Out of those 2, the Dubia roaches seem to be easier to breed because, yes they need more space but 1) you don't need a separate container for the babies and 2) they will breed at room temperature, just not as quickly as at 80-85 degrees. As for mealworm or superworm breeding, I'm kind of thinking no on that point as when I get my bearded dragon, I would only be feeding a few superworms per insect feeding(like maybe 4 or 5 at the most), and occasionally mealworms, so I don't need like hundreds or thousands of them in a colony like I would with crickets and roaches.

I've been going off ur video and I've just had my first lot hatch from the dirt dish but I've also found that I've had to keep the vermiculite in a separate tub because there's hundreds of babies all through it. With the ones just hatched from the dirt, should I jist tip them in with the ones that hatched in the vermiculite. Getting so many tubs lol

I use a mix of vermiculite and charcoal. I find that there is no smell at all (unless you hold it directly under your nose) .

Small tip, to prevent escapes, put packing tape along the edges, their arms can’t climb on packing tape. It works!

Richard, I just received my 500 cricket’s however their cricket abode has not arrived yet. I found a small clear container, melted little holes all around for ventilation. I put some garden soil in and added egg cartons for climbing threw in some organic banana peels and a half of organic cucumber for food and hydration. My question is when their abode does arrive and I set the vermiculite and soil up can I just dump the existing set up into the new one? What if there have been any eggs layed? Will that hurt them? I actually use the crickets to feed my flocks of chickens. What temperature should I keep them in? It’s been 99 degrees to 100 here for about two and a have months.

Is quite good at eating - he LOVES DUBIAS, and will eat everything else good, although not a fan of the fruit bettle grubs but i think they are too big for him anyway. When you first get them you can pop them in the fridge for about 15 minutes then transfer them no problem. They go a bit dormant and won't be hopping around.

Whats with 90% of cricket videos having a container that will never suit for more than 50 crickets before they all start attacking each other. I have big storage containers for crickets.
