In this episode, we are flipping the Datsun on its side! I wanted to clear all the old paint and rust from the bottom of the car without having to fork up over a grand for an auto rotisserie, so here's a budget version!

Nice work. I'm going to do something like this for my Z. If the center of the radius of your curve was closer to the center mass of your car, it would roll much easier.

It’s called a “Tiptisserie”. I built one several years ago that flips to both sides for a couple projects I had here. Watching your video gave me several ideas to improve mine so thanks for that. (Also: per the suggestion in the comments, I wouldn’t recommend gluing it UNTIL you have everything exactly how you want it, and won’t need to change anything to fit other cars).

I KNOW! It really hurt doing that, I have an extra bumper though. The bolt on the side there was so rotted shut, I tried everything getting it loose but it was digging into the body and I'd rather chop the bumper than have to repair a whole panel 😭

Creative and cost effective man. Like it. Perfect for someone doing their first car or only car or someone dabbing in the Bobby and doesn’t want to commit to spend big money on a higher end rotisserie as the cheaper ones are just that, cheap.

Nice work! Great videos. I'm building one for my 74 Opel Manta. I think these things work especially well on lighter cars. The body shell of my car is only about 450 pounds. I also happened to have all the lumber handy, just needed to get the hardware. So a almost no cost contraption. Thanks for the inspiration!!

The only drawback to this type of roll over jig is the extra floor space needed to roll it over vs. a rotisserie the rolls in place.

That is a different approach but I like the price. 67 C10 cab may be heavier as it is a GVW 3,440 complete. Ironically, I own the 69 Datsun Roadster still, but worked on these while new. Yes, I was an ASE master tech at the Datsun dealer. Since I had a motorcycle background the cars with two carbs came to me to tune, rebuild the carbs then synchronize them together for equal air flow, set idle, only then set the air/fuel ratio. The last 240Z I worked on belonged to a buddy and I installed the 3 Weber intake and carburetors. With a stock camshaft but properly adjusted valve lash clearance, it ran like as cat with it’s tail on fire. I bought a used 1976 280Z from a lady, but lucked out. The 1976 had higher compression, better cam profile and more pin off-set than other models. Rated at a higher HP, the 1977 suffered slightly. Now a factoid; the production date of 7/1979 was leased fuel with no catylictic converter. If the door production date was 8/1979, it came with cat & unleaded stickers everywhere and small restrictor in the filler neck. Now this was the 280ZX or course but the 1981 model was the anniversary model complete with Tee-Top and offered in turbo as HP continued downward slide. Interesting enough, I found out years later the model year changed in July to august due to the UAW. They got two weeks off, then Union pipe fitters, fork lift operators, material handlers, etc came back to work. The next two weeks was controlled by groups of build engineers that knew “Lefty-Loosey” and “Righty-Tighty” who trained each assembly station as to what went in first, second and so forth. So, in two weeks the vehicle past problems, fitment and function during assembly, they went full blast for UAW speed. Vehicles are track tested, destroyed, taken apart and stored in archives as serial #1, #2 went to different places in company storage, prepped and wrapped. This practice was guessed to be started by Lee Iacocca. This practice of new model year was adopted by the DOT and passed to others. Retired.

Since most people doing this roll over is doing it on their Z car, can you include some measurments? I'm just kinda guessing at this point and don't like rolling my car on it's side with just gessing sizes. Thanks, great idea.

Hello Brad, very impressive. Looks like something from the Flintstones, but it works! I have a much heavier car. It's a old w109 Benz 1972 6.3 Thought I'd use the rocker jack point tubes, as the main support. 🤔 I'd still need some support at roof level??? Also, in my case, I'm worried about the Marine ply-wood holding up. Thanks for the thought provoking video. Very smart and.... cost effective. Stefan
@allen2515
@allen2515 Жыл бұрын
Good idea. I wonder if the reason why it is so heavy for you to tip over is the center of radius is based on the wrong place. I would imagine the center of gravity for the whole car (middle of the bumper supports) would work better? I am building mine soon.
@ddMcDd-yl4td
@ddMcDd-yl4td 3 жыл бұрын
at 12:10 you can see where you didn't cut the curve smoothly on the rocker, that would make it more difficult to roll up, especially since it is at the start of the roll. smoothing it prolly won't make easy enuff to do it solo but it might make 2 or 3 people workable. I've got two series 2 240's, one for parts and one to build, give me a shout if you need a pic from an original 240 or some parts or whatever.

Most the ones I’ve made I put the radius under the car you aren’t helping your self any with it on the outside of the car like it is. Because you have to lift all the weight around the radius, pretty much like a 500 pound wheelbarrow. Also I use a full sheet of plywood(multiple stacked on each other)with one corner radius off of it. But glad to see you got it. Excited too see your builds come to life i fan boi over your concepts!
@SlapHappy
@SlapHappy 2 жыл бұрын
How can you put the radius under thr car tho? Doesnt the radius have to end on the outside of the car? Or else the car wouldnt be able to rotate without hitting the ground
@chyrt

Maybe to put something on the rolling corners just to decrease the chance of it rolling back. Screwing some cut-off 2x4's horizontal onto the corners so they stick out will only take a few minutes, but might save everything.

Hiya Brad great video amazing hope their is no such thing as a stupid question but how would you stop your Jig catching fire when welding? Obviously you would have fire safety equipment around when welding. Maybe one made of metal would be better
@SchofieldBrothersRacing
@SchofieldBrothersRacing Жыл бұрын
From experience, regular lumber doesn't catch fire easily unless you weld directly onto it. The saw dust is what is VERY flammable. I just clean very well every time I'm done, and if I have to weld next to the wood, I place a piece of scrap sheet metal to protect the wood...or a Harbor Freight weld blanket.

I would suggest that the two upright 2x4s you put on the front, the ones that become the support legs when rolled onto the side, really really should have been rotated 90 degrees like the ones in the back. So that when they have the load on them, the 3.5” dimension is vertical. They are much stronger in that orientation. I strongly recommend you redo the front. I have seen many many 2x4s snap when a load is place on the side. Almost none when a load is on the thicker edge.
