Hello, everyone! If you're new here, I post new content every Sunday/Wednesday EST at 2pm. Subscribe to stay tuned and let me know down below what you'd like to see!
In this video, I show you how to build a cat tree for free! We upcycled some cans and turned trash into an upcycled cat tree. This DIY was about 90% repurposed and only 10% new. We borrowed power tools and turned trash into a zero-waste cat tree.
UPDATE (July 2020): I fixed the cat tree, talk about how it's holding up, and talk about the importance of repairing. Click here to watch: • FIXING MY DIY CAT TREE...
This was such a fun, low waste, cheap alternative to buying a cat tree. I am all about sustainability and practicality and this turned out so great!

Hot glue on the can rims, then use Duct Tape around the joint area of the cans. If you can fill each of the lower cans with either sand or plaster of Paris before gluing the next can onto it, it will add some weight to the bottom of the Cat Tower. Old pillows that are no longer used (you can take the covers off the pillows and maybe unroll some of the fiber fill to make new cushions out of the old pillows) or use old blankets or towels folded into a cushion.

@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist It is just ideas that I came up with, I currently have made a cat tower out of an old T.V. stand corner unit (not the best thing but it works). I am also going to make it so that a cat can use the top shelf to get on the shelf that is attached to the wall walkway. Check out some of Jackson Galaxy's videos. I enjoy your videos, Thank you!

And, in our area, we have regular trash pickup, but the next day is BIG stuff that the claw truck picks up. @TheSimpleEnvironmentalist
@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist 3 жыл бұрын
This was 90% upcycled, I don't see what you mean: cans that would have otherwise been trash, t-shirts and fabric that could not be donated (aka trash), wood that had no other purpose. The only thing that was brand new was the twine! It might not look sturdy but nearly a year later it is still standing. I know, it's not the best, but I am not an engineer or architect so it's alright for having no experience. It could have been worse lol

Should just use pvc pipe, its sturdy and beats having to put together a bunch of pieces (cans) that will likely fall apart anyway. Can find it at your local home improvement store for $10-13 for a 10-20 foot (depending on what size you get) and they can cuz the sizes you need right there at the store (in lumber). Also pvc pipe has other fittings so if you wanted to do a totally different design or project you can glue (with pvc glue/primer in one also about $10). Also while your there you can check to see if they have left over lumber (typically sitting on it's own cart in lumber full of warped pieces or unused cut pieces), and then head over to flooring and check with carpet people to see if they have any remnants (unused cut pieces).
@PsychoPixy222
@PsychoPixy222 3 жыл бұрын
Just as a heads up hot glue will not stick/adhear to pvc, though if your just adding the rope and you sand the pvc (to give a rougher outside for glue to stick to) and wrap the rope tighter together than she did then there shouldn't be a problem. The way she wrapped her rope the cats will likely pull it right off the can with only a few tries.
@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist
@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist 3 жыл бұрын
The point was to build this from trash, though, and not new items and pvc can be toxic :(
@PsychoPixy222
@PsychoPixy222 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist Based on what I could find the only time PVC can be toxic is when your trying to melt it. Also every building and home (unless it's really old & out dated) use PVC for plumbing. That's water you drink, bathe, cook..etc with being carried by PVC. So unless your gonna try and melt it (which if u do good luck it's pretty thick) then it's perfectly safe. Crafters use it so much infact I just found out they make certain pieces (such as flat end cap) that won't work for plumbing but are specifically made for people who craft. I do love the concept of your idea though of reusing typical things you may have or throw away. The cans made me feel nervous though as they weren't structurally sound (easily break), and unless you spray them with some rust-resistant spray I'd be worried about rust being a problem as well. I know my two cats when they start chasing each other and jumping on things that they'd need something sturdier. I loved that you were thinking out of the box of new ideas though. :)
@PsychoPixy222
@PsychoPixy222 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist Hey! Random thought.. you know what would be a cool video along the lines of making it out of garbage items would be dumpster diving at bigger stores or wherever and finding random things to make it out of. Or random items from yard sales or places like Goodwill (oooh or dollar store items, love me those creative up-cycle dollar store videos). See like I said I like your concept behind your idea, & this idea one might have to go out of their home to get BUT it's still either free or cheap. And at the very least it would be entertaining to watch what items u find & use (like cloth dinner mats instead of carpet).
