How to build a custom shower tray base to fit a Mira Flight non-slip tray

In this episode I show how I went about building a custom base for my Mira Flight non-slip shower tray.
This is incredibly strong, super supportive, and provides a stable surface for the tray to rest on.

Good work mate. I'm doing a similar job. My outlet pipe is from a bath tub which is 11cm from the floor to the centre point of the pipe. So I'm probably going to have to build a raised custom built platform for my shower tray.

You can put a load of silicone on top of the wooden framing to cushion the tray and help level it up, instead (or as well as) the shims. I would also put a goop of silicone on the outside edge of the tray and stick it to the walls (maybe just the one wall in your case) Looks great, Good job 👍

Doing a nice job pal. Could you have fitted a tray that would have been flush or near flush with the floor level? Also is it not more common to fit the tray before the tiling so the tile sit on the tray if that makes sense?

Yes and yes, except that our waste pipe couldn't sit in the floor because of the direction of the joists and the walls below, so we had to run it above the surface in this instance. It's perfectly common to tile down into the tray. And that works fine. I wanted to tank the whole room for peace of mind, but you can tile onto the tray itself.

You seem to of installed the tray and base wrong. You should of tiled down to the shower tray not push the tray and base upto the tiles.

Looks great mate. Why didnt you lay it on a sheet of ply then cement it down? There isnt much of a fall from shower waste to 90deg turn? Doesn there need to be? Just asking thanks

Often beds of cement dry and crack, and then offer very little support, or uneven support which can cause the tray to crack. Skill builder have done an excellent video on it which is worth checking out on their channel. The vortex waste from these Mira trays does a great job of forcing the water along the pipe, so the shallow fall isn't too much of an issue. With other types of waste and trap it might be though. How would you make a platform for a quadrant shower tray?

It's a lot trickier, but you'd need to make angled cuts and block out and support the majority of the base. They are very strong, so if you don't have framing under all of it, it's not the end of the world.

Hows this tray when it comes to cleaning, with the anti-slip ive had other trays where it makes the tray a nightmare to clean ?

It's alright, in that it cleans up fine, but I accidentally got some expanding PU foam on it, and deliberately left it to go hard before cutting it off, and it's strained the tray when it landed. A real pain!
