Hi Patrick, That's me in the Red Clipper Sea Canoe on my very first sail ever (and with you). Thanks for taking me out that day. Since then I've been out dozens of times in much lighter wind then that day (20-30 mph?) learning my secondary stability limits with the sail up. A high seat position on my canoe is much different than a low seat position of a kayak with a sail. My Falcon Sail is doing everything I wanted from it. I normally paddle inland lakes here in central Indiana. I'm almost always out-and-back so at some point I'm into the wind and then with the wind. (sail up/sail down) I would say an average trip for me is about 8 to 10 miles in 2 - 3 hours. Since inland lakes are almost always ever changing wind conditions as I wind my way around the hills I'm constantly having to adjust the sail which could not be easier taking less than a second to do. Almost always I'm paddle-sailing. In other words the sail is an assist to my paddling. In my experience I do not find my average paddle much faster than without the sail in light winds, (maybe .5 to 1.0 mph in 8 to 15 mph winds) but I find I work a whole lot less hard to maintain my speed. I highly recommend your sails. And thanks for providing coaching on the install. Your experience with my style of boat made the final product perfectly located on the hull. Hope to see you on the water again soon! Happy Sailing!

Thank you for the comment. That was a great day of paddle sailing. If I were you, I would think about making it to the South Bass Rendezvous. Even if you do not feel ready for the full blow paddles we plan on doing, there are still many things do do, including meeting a few of the hundreds of other paddlers that will be there. Keep us posted. Send more pictures and paddle sail reports.

@@FalconSails Paddle Report, May 24th 2019 Raccoon Lake (Cecil M. Harden Lake) Distance paddled 10+ miles. Sail: 4 Miles. Wind SW 8-15 mph. Saw 2 Golden Eagles and 1 Bald Eagle. Saw several big Leather Back Turtles and a couple Northern Water Snakes sunning. The lake is 15 ft above normal water level. I would say I had my best sail ever. I really am getting to know where my secondary stability is on my canoe. I was super confident even in some pretty heavy gusts at times on the north end of the lake. Is the sheet line long enough to let the sail swing forward so there is no wind force applied before dropping the mast
@FalconSails
@FalconSails Жыл бұрын
yes the sheet line is plenty long enough for that. Though if you want to let the boom weathervane to depower ask us for a mast extension to put the boom above the standing line. Though after years of kayak sailing I do not recommend you create the downsides associated with a depowering system like that. There is a much better way to depower your sail which is much safer and does not create any of the downsides of having a sail so high it is above all the standing lines necessary for the kind of depowering I guess you may be looking at Unless you are in big winds, all you have to do is uncleat the forestay and the mast will gently fall. Proper depowering on big wind days has been addressed in the video at this link. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nLZndNua3LHYmIU.html Call the Falcon Sail shop any time you like. www.falconsails.com/contact.php

BEST sailing rig I've seen for my Current Designs Solara 135! I added the available foot steered rudder for it DOES help in a crosswind. Just one question Patrick. Are sponsons not needed to prevent my kayak from rolling over if a strong gust of wind should hit me?
@FalconSails
@FalconSails 4 жыл бұрын
That vast majority of Falcon Sail customers do not use sponsons. After having had thousands of conversations with customers, I have never heard somebody say they went without sponsons and then decided to change their mind. If the wind will not tip over your empty kayak sitting on the grass, or even on the water, it will not even come close to tipping your boat over if you are sitting in the boat. It takes a tremendous about of wind to tip over a kayak like yours. I suggest you skip the sponsons, and be cautions and see what you think. I bet you will decide not to use them.

Falcon Sails can be rigged on any kayak. Below are some easy day sailing videos that show them handling nicely in light conditions. Sit on top kayaks in general have a lot going for them that make them great sailing kayaks. #1 they are usually shorter which makes them easier to control, #2 they are usually wider which makes them more stable and handle wind better and makes them easier to handle, #3 their hulls typically have more contour to them for tracking which also gives them great lateral resistance for better sailing across the wind, and even making up wind progress. Falcon Sails will make a rig that is perfect for your kayak. It will be easy to install and will be very solid. All you will need are basic tools. When you order, at the very end of the process we will ask you what kind of kayak you will rig your sail on, and then make a perfect kit specific for your kayak. @@SisterBaby Kayak Sailing is very relaxing. I have a hard time understanding how somebody would not put a good quality sail on their kayak, when you can have a rig that weighs just 3.5 pounds, folds to the size of an umbrella and secures to your deck in seconds, that can push you across the wind, and even up wind. It is too much fun to pass on. It is very relaxing in light wind and exciting if you decide to go out in bigger winds. If it is too exciting, with a Falcon rig you can drop the sail in seconds and secure it to your deck in a few more seconds.

You can put a small dab of silicone on before you tighten up things to make sure it is 100% water tight. If you skip this step it will be okay, but may leak a few drops of water if the deck of your boat sees a lot of water. In any case, it is a good idea, and any type of silicone will work fine.

Right now we have a special for $15 shipping to any place in Canada. Your Wavewalk S4 with its contoured hull will sail very nicely. I would install a 1.4 square meter falcon sail on it. We only ship direct to our customers, because every boat a sail is installed on requires a review a custom packing list. Your kit will include every piece of hardware you need for a easy and solid rigging job. All you will need are basic tools. All we do is design and make the best sails we can for kayaks, and provide the best support possible to our customers. Re-sellers do not have the expertise to do this. You can order directly from Falcon Sails, and get the discounted shipping rate when it is available. You can find out what the shipping rate is by placing an order for a sail rig and then see how much shipping is. @FalconSails
@FalconSails 2 жыл бұрын
I cut mine to get it closer to the correct length. Then I put insert it to see how close it is. Then I cut off a little more and test fit it and then test fit it again. I do that a few times until it is really close. At the very end, I use sand paper to shorten the last few mm to perfection. When you get close to the right length, only take off 1/2 half of what you think necessary to finalize it. When it is really close use sand paper to finish it off.

@FalconSails
@FalconSails 4 жыл бұрын
Rudders are far from being required. If a kayak is fine without a rudder when not sailing, it will be fine for kayak sailing. Jut like kayaking without a sail, kayaks that are 16 feet and longer it is best to have either an adjustable skeg or a rudder. On kayaks that are 13 feet and shorter rudders are completely optional. In any case, your paddle is much more powerful for turning that a rudder is. A rudder is handy for lazy kayak sailing. You can sail along, and set your rudder down, and eat a sandwich or do what ever you want. If you do not have a rudder, you will need to make an occasional paddle stroke to stay on course or change course. If you want a rudder, Falcon Sails will sell you a smart track rudder at 40% below list price. Smart Track rudders are the best after market rudder you will find. They are better than pretty much all the other rudders out there. If you want to take advantage of this offer, call our shop to discuss.

I own 5 different kayaks. I have rigged a sail on every one of them. 2 have no rudder and no adjustable skeg. If your no sail kayak is fine without a rudder, it is more than likely fine for kayak sailing without a rudder.

Keels and Lee boards are 100% not necessary. Conventional sail thinking leads people to assume all boats that sail have them. Sail boat hulls are designed to be as slippery as possible going forward and a by product of this is a hull that slips sideways and spints. A kayak hull is designed to track and go in a straight line. This is achieve by having lateral resistance throughout the length of the hull. Imagine towing a loaded kayak from the front vs towing a loaded kayak from the side. The kayak you tow from the front will be 10x faster than the same kayak being towed from the side. That is because a kayak hull generates a lot more resistance going sideways than it does going forward. So a kayak hull is really pretty good at sailing. It will not sail perfectly well as a purpose built sailboat will but it will sail amazingly well and it can all be had by adding a 3.5 pound Falcon Sail to your kayak. We wrote quite a bit more about this on our frequently asked questions page. See what we wrote on lateral resistance appendages here. www.falconsails.com/KayakSailingFAQ.php#centerboard

I will try to answer all your questions in 1 post. Yes Kayak Sailing is a lot of fun. Yes you can install a Falcon Sail on your Pelican Summit 100 kayak. We have analyzed this kayak, and helped people rig Falcon Sails, on them. We have a great parts list including proper adapter blocks for a fast and solid rigging job. All you need are basic tools. You can design your custom sail here. www.falconsails.com/store These short wide kayaks are really good for kayak sailing. Their short length make them easy to handle, their width makes them stable and easy to handle. This kayak of yours has a nice contoured hull which gives it great up wind sailing potential. With decent wind, you can make up wind progress with no paddling. If you want to make more aggressive up wind progress you have to do a little paddling. The more aggressive you your up wind tack is, the more you have to paddle. The laws of diminishing returns set in. But you can gain useful propulsion to within 30 degrees of straight up wind if you keep the sail oriented to the wind properly, and also keep the hull moving to generate lateral resistance. Of course these aggressive tacks involves some paddling. But you can reach across the wind back and forth without doing any paddling. You can even make up wind progress. If you plan your outing, you can sail about all day long if you want. Yes you can move your sail rig from your old boat to your new boat. We have extra boat kits that allow you to rig another kayak so you can use your falcon sail on 2 kayaks if you like. In that case you can move your rig from one kayak to the other in about 30 seconds.

@@1234superduper Great answers all. I think I will purchase one soon. Is it possible to adapt my kayak with a rudder?
@FalconSails
@FalconSails 3 жыл бұрын
@@ronatola This kayak is not configured for easy rigging of a rudder on it. But of course with some ingenuity and determination, it is possible to put a rudder on any kayak. If you call the Falcon Sails shop, we can explain a plan that you could follow to make it happen. With that said your 10 foot kayak, will sail very nicely without a rudder. We help people rig Sails on short kayaks like this all the time and the vast majority of boats under 12 feet long do not have rudders installed, and it is not a problem for sailing. As a matter of fact, I can not even think of a single short kayak with a Sail that has a rudder on it. One of our demo kayaks is 12 foot long and we do not even consider putting a rudder on it. Until they are over 12 feet long, it is okay to not have one. If you buy a Falcon Sail, we can help you get a Smart Track rudder system for your kayak at about 40% below list price. So it is an option. I would pass on it. If you rig your Pelican Summit 100, and move it to another longer kayak, then it may be worth while to do it.

What knot is used on the stay lines?
@FalconSails
@FalconSails 3 жыл бұрын
All the knots are pre tied on a Falcon Sail rig. All you have to do is make the final adjustment to fit your kayak. A detailed set of instructions with a knot diagram comes with a Falcon Sail rig. There is a combination of knots that work together to make a super reliable set up, with absolutely zero slippage for the life of the rig, and super easy adjustment. It includes a overhand knot to attach it to our junction ring, an overhand knot on a bight to make an adjustment loop, and a sheet bend to do the actual adjustment. It is a really nice and effective knot set up. For quite a few years we encouraged our customers to experiment with knots, and they were always inferior to what we include in our kits. Most knots people with experiment with would usually adjust or slide a bit and or also get so tight, they would be about impossible to adjust. Any adjustment or sliding will eliminate a sail rigs good adjustment. Not being able to adjust lines, makes it too hard to perfect the tuning of your lines which takes away from the strength and proper geometry of a rig.

Yes. We make rigging kits for every kind of kayak our customers ever ask to rig a sail on. After helping thousands of customers and doing this full time for over 10 years, we have seen it all. We have analyzed 9 out of 10 kayaks and have the parts list and stock ready to go. At the very end of the purchase process we ask, what kind of kayak or canoe do you want to rig your sail on. You tell us, and we make a rigging kit for you. It will include 100% of the parts and adapters you need for a easy and solid rigging job. You can custom design your sail here. www.falconsails.com/store

And of course, as always we will make sure we send you the best kit possible for your kayak, The final step in the purchase process is telling us what kind of kayak you have. If you fail to tell us, we will track you down and make sure we know everything necessary for us to create a perfect rigging kit for your kayak. Imagine how fast they would go double the sail size.

Actually a bigger sail only helps if there is really light wind. And when there is really light wind, even a huge sail will not do much for you. At a super light wind levels most people would prefer to have a relaxed paddle and go 3mph vs use a big sail to push you at 1mph. That big sail will be too big at times. Falcon Sails have the balance of size that will not over power you in high winds, and still can take advantage of lighter wins. If you look at this video at 39 minutes 42 seconds, you will see the 1.0 square meter sail is pushing the boat it is rigged on just as fast as the 1.4 square meter sail is pushing the boat it is rigged on. Once you hit maximum hull seed with a kayak, you need to add 10x more power to start surfing, and you would need a sail 10x bigger. It would be dangerous, and not do much for you. In any case, there is no sense in over powering any boat.

It is easy. If the wind is too much, you can lower a Falcon Sail in seconds. 98% of the time the wind is not strong enough to push you over anyway. Most people will be afraid to go out long before the wind is too much.
