Time to tear down that old rickety shed and build a nice shed, even if it's only to hold firewood that doesn't mean it can't be nice. The build is very simple and straight forward, and can be accessorized to suit what you need very easily.

Great job, I would recommend splitting the whole cuts that you have in the bottom of your wood pile, split wood drys out much faster. I just found this out last week, and now here I am, talking like I know what I am doing. 😁

Haha thanks. I actually ended up recycling them with the city for compost. I didn't have faith in that bottom 2 rows of wood when I cut the tree down to be very good for burning. It's a willow and man is it sappy, pops like crazy and just stinks when burning. Take care

Looks like a really sturdy build, top job 👍🏻.....I found with my log store it's handy to have it sectioned off so that newer greener logs can be put into their own sections so that the drier wood isn't buried at the bottom. Maybe it isn't a problem in your climate but in the UK the logs can take a year or two to dry out enough. Great video new subscriber!

This is a great build. You mentioned adding a tarp which I would highly recommend. I built a similar shed that was 8ft wide. I picked up an 8ft wide tarp and attached a pvc pipe with end caps to the bottom using zip ties to the tarp grommets. It allows you to roll down the tarp to protect the wood from rain and snow then simply roll it up when you need wood or to let the sun do it’s thing on nice days.

Wonderful video and excellent instructional write-up!!! I am now a follower! This helped me come up with my design for a wood drying rack for my live edge pieces that I use for woodworking projects. I get free wood all the time, but drying it in the garage takes so much longer due to the lack of airflow. Now I have a place to dry all the stumps and lumber before they turn into tables, coatracks etc. Thank you so much.

Thank you so much for your tutorial it was very helpful I learned a lot from it I learned how to not make my wood crack by reversing my screws. I learned how to easily make sure my uprights were level. And I learned how to easily cut a slope. Great video. One thing you may want to think about is since its small and just for your fire pit. May want to add a small separation like an 1/8 of the length for small kindling. That way you dont have to pull from the middle for your larger pieces

Nice video to watch and very informative. Timber must be cheap in Canada (all those trees!). In England, timber is quite expensive so I could never justify using as much as you have. I'm afraid I'll be using a lot of reclaimed timber from old pallets!

Looks great - I want to build this one. Not an experienced builder, does something like this need to have footers or posts in the ground? Mine might be in an area where it could tip over - or maybe that's not necessary since the weight of the base/and presence of wood will stabilize it? Any thoughts appreciated.

Looks great. I've been thinking about making a wood shed and this looks uncomplicated with minimal tools needed. Good tip about how to not split the wood. It's a pain having to switch out drill bits to screw heads when drilling pilot holes. Your videos are very easy to watch and follow. Keep up the good work. Never heard of running the drill counterclockwise to cauterize the wood. I guess that's much faster than pre-drilling holes. Thanks.

Hey! Love this shed, I even grabbed plans on your Etsy page. Looking forward to building this next weekend! One question I had as I gather material, for the roof 1x6s, just curious if I were to grab 1x6x8 pieces and not have to cut them and glue, would it still work ok? Maybe there is a specific reason for the 1x6x5s in your build.

No problem, thanks for watching. If you are talking face cord, about 1 cord. 20" long logs will fit, it's taller than 4', but shorter than 8' so it balances out to be 1 face cord

Very nice tutorial. Any changes you would recommend to have the roof pitch towards the front instead? Or is this just a matter of using your build and closing up "the front" and keeping the back open?

Thanks. Use the same build and just change which side you put the wall boards on. Instead of putting them on the low side wall put them on the high side wall. Then your low end with the roof pitching towards you is the open end. Pretty much like you said yup

Thanks! Cost mostly, 1x6 and 5/4×6 in my area are massively different in price. And they didn't need to be overly strong for such a small roof, this was plenty

Thanks, glad you liked it. I thought about it, but if it rains it'll dry out again pretty quickly. At least in my area. If you're in a are with more persistent rain you may want a cover. Either a couple doors or even a tarp cover of some sort, maybe a roll up

This looks awesome! Just one quick question. Pressure treated wood contracts on its own. Should you still use a spacer? And what’s the thickness of your spacer- was it 1/4 or 3/8 inch?

Thanks! Normally for a deck or something I wouldn't use a spacer because yes, as it dries it creates the perfect gap. In this case however I started with 1/4" spacer and then it would open up a bit more as they dry, that allows for airflow through the pile from above, below, behind and beside to keep the wood stored inside dry, and allow for fresh wood to dry out, instead of holding moisture. The larger the gaps the more airflow, but not getting so big that water just floods in. Hope that makes sense

It sure is! Holding up absolutely fine. Still as solid as the day I built it and it's seen many cords of wood go through it. And that's the beauty of it, you can customize it as you like! Go for it

I never used decking boards before. I grabbed some wet PT and I'm wondering if your boards were dry or if I attach them wet will they shrink a little to allow some air flow through the bottom.... Assuming I butt them together tight with no spacer ? Thanks

If they are really wet they will shrink down as they dry out after they are installed and you'll probably have close to 1/4" between the boards after

I did. I wanted it to be centered since that would make sure that it was even on each side. You don't have to if you don't care about that, just go one side to the other.

Thanks, glad you liked it! I did at one point, not sure what happened to it. I did briefly show an incomplete list in the video at the start, but I needed more materials yet. I am also going to be making a set of plans for this, but I have no ETA on them as I'm a one man show trying to do everything lol. All I can guarantee is I'll have them ready by the end of February. I'm also in the process of trying to move, not enough hours in the day 🙃

2x6 frame - 10’ piece = 7’L x 21”W, outdoor wood, 3” screws (3 per joint) Exterior wood glue Legs (shed corners are two 2x4’s glued and screwed), 5’8” front legs, 5’ rear legs Floor - deck boards (grooved underneath) Roof - 5’ x 1x6” fence boards (could also go with plywood and asphalt shingles) * 4 - 2x4x12 * 5 - 2x6x10 * 1 - 2x6x8 * 17 - 5/4x6x8 deck boards * 9 - 1x6x5 fence boards * 1 box of 2" screws * 1 box of 2.5" screws * 1 box of 3" screws * Outdoor rated glue (optional) * 1 - 4x4x8 or 4 deck blocks (optional) * 1 can of end grain preservative

Should be good to set it on some 24x30 paving stones. But to be honest, I'd still dig out slightly and put some rocks down, then some sand to level it and then pavers. If you set it right on the grass it'll sink over time

I think I burnt some pressure treated wood a few months ago and felt really bizarre. I survived but won't do that again. How many 2x6 did you use for this ? Six or eight ?

Yeah, don't do that. I use five 2x6 I believe

I watched this video a few times and then put together a 10' by 4' base (box frame) last night. 3" deck screws. I'm going to get another 10' PT 2x6 for the center... I have to check the level 1st tho bc I think 1 of the boards had some warp. How do you deal with the wood when it has a slight warp ? Just get it close as possible and try to pin in it place w the other wood pieces ?

That's awesome! I'm glad I could help and pumped your building it! Unfortunately yeah, I get one side where I want it and then use the other side like a big lever to pull it into place and pin it as I straighten it, working my way to the other end. Good luck on yours, I'd love to see it when you're done!

The reason for the size difference is I'm going to store some shovels and rakes and stuff in it and use part of it for firewood. I have a old rusted metal shed that this will replace, and I think it will look a lot better than the metal shed that has a hole in the roof lol.

Hey, might as well make it fill multiple roles if you need it, right! That's the beauty of building it yourself, you can make it suite your needs.

@@JessedoesDIY seem to have a small problem. I've tried measuring long corner to corner, and I'm off around quarter inch. As for the short side I was a little over 48" so I grabbed a large clamp that solves the 48" side.(allowing me to squeeze to exactly 48") I can't figure out how to identify the potential out of square on the long measure. Is there an "allowable tolerance" to be out of square or will it cause problems?

Oh that's fine. For rough carpentry (which is what this is) even when I was building houses, we were allowed up to 1/2" out anywhere, but we tried to keep it at 1/4". You'll never see 1/4" as you go. Just keep pulling things as square and tight as you can and the eye is easily confused. Most of the time in rough framing you get it as close as you can and as long as it looks good to the eye you'll never see anything, even tho a tape measure might say otherwise. Just keep hammering ahead!
