I've been asked a lot about my hand suction dredges lately. So I decided to do a brief instructional video on how to build one. The are very inexpensive to build and can really improve your gold recovery. If you're willing to invest an hour into building it, you can save $60 over buying one. Enjoy.

I’ve watched as many of these hand-made PVC suction dredges that I can find, but not one of them has made the inlet pipe shaped like one of those vacuum cleaner nozzles. I’m talking about the nozzles that start out flat and then become round in about 10” of length. People use them to clean between the console and the seats of our cars. By heating and shaping (tapering it flat) the PVC inlet nozzle a person wouldn’t need the internal grid classifier in the end of the round inlet tube. Knocking rocks that get stuck on the end would be easier and faster, too.

I actually seen a video the other that a fella made one with a flat edge. He heated it up add squished it with 2 cinder blocks. Then he trimmed the flat edge to suit his needs. But I don't think it was on a DIY video for make pumps, I believe it was on a things to bring panning video. I will search in my history to see if I can find it for you and add to these comments if I can

thanks John!!! I built one without the one-way valves..I intend to spit the sucked up material into a classifier on top of my 5 gallon bucket, then pan out the concentrates if I don't get a sluice by spring...your 2" wingnut rubber test plug is by far the best for suction..local hardware store had 2 soil grabbed both lol. anyways great design thanks again for sharing. I "will be" a first timer this spring and this will help a lot!!

+John Jacobs after further testing I am going to buy 2 check valves...mine sucks up water during the test but doesn't hold it in very well..the check valves you used are a bit pricey in my area so I will pick up 2 basic PVC check valves for about $12.50 each...I just hope it can allow sand and small gravel to pass through..so now I see why you used the valves...mine wont have a hose just a draw and release into a classifier on a bucket for now

+Waynos Detecting Adventures Waynos. You may just want to build a hand suction dredge without the valves for what you want to use it for. You can build one just like the one in this video with the tube, plunger, and plumbers stop. Instead of the hose and valve system at the end of the tube, put a 45 degree elbow at the end and suck, turn, dump. You can see the one that I made in my latest video "Fall day down on the creek". Even my brother mike (in the video) can use it! :) It's my 4" sucker...works awesome and it moves a lot of material.

+Chase Johnson Chase. You can use hand-powered tools all year round. The gas or electric powered equipment can only be used at certain times that is defined in the state's mining rules and regs. But, it is my understanding that hand powered tools like this suction dredge are open for use all year long. Thanks.

John I've seen the video's put out by "Gold Hog" on their "Hog Pan" . They say it is legal to use anywhere as they patented it as a "Gold Panning" Device like an ordinary simple hand-held "gold Pan". However, with all the rules and regulations in Idaho pertaining to even personal recreational prospecting would it be legal to use in Idaho?
