Internet forums. I highly recomend irate or pirate. Look through threads of guys doing buildups. You will learn a lot. It slows the builds down, with pictures, and the ability to really get into the details. In today's day an age, a lack of information should not hold you back from doing anything.

I don't know enough about the alloys used to make axle tubes and knuckles, but when the heat gets hot enough to kill a spring it makes me mighty nervous for the strength of the rest of the steel. I'll be very interested to watch how that turns out.
@BrokeWrench
@BrokeWrench Жыл бұрын
The heat would ruin any heat treat by annealing everything. Thats bad for spring steel, gears, and bearings because they are treated, but the rest should be untreated. So as far as i know hes replacing everything that would care. I could be wrong, but thats my understanding of how it works
@joshuabaker5712
@joshuabaker5712 Жыл бұрын
@brokewrench4073 you are correct. The oly thing I might he worried about if if the axle tubes are warped but a quick check with a straight edge will tell you that. And unless the axle was quickly cooled are all that heat I doubt it would be.

Another trick to pushing the carrier out of the housing is simply turn the pinion, the hypoid gears force the ring gear away/ out(in one direction, pulls in the other). That trough on the bottom of the case in the pinion bearing area is the oil return passage and yup like you said, it's a crap catcher, the ring gear throws the oil (AND CRAP!)into the top passage to supply the pinion lubrication. I also measure my set up bearing thicknesses to compare against the new bearings. You never know how close a new bearing is to the old or a different brand and as you know, that is fixed with shims, so knowing ahead of time can save time and grey hair. I like your thinning of the gear paint trick, going to use that! Great video.........

41:33 - be careful about caliper swapping. If what you have is working good for you, that's great. I would compare the piston area of the original ford twin piston caliper to the single GM caliper you are suggesting before making a change, maybe they are close enough that it doesn't make much difference and on a light vehicle like a Samurai you may not even notice. If you go to a smaller piston area and the input pressure from your master cylinder is the same then caliper force applied = pressure * caliper piston area. A smaller caliper piston area reduces the force the caliper can apply. Since brakes work on friction the reduced force applied to the brake pads an rotor from the smaller piston caliper will reduce the amount of friction that is generated and therefore reduces your braking capacity, i.e. - you won't stop as fast for the same master cylinder pressure. The trade off is that a larger caliper piston area requires more fluid volume to be moved to engage the brakes, so if you don't change anything else other than going to a larger piston caliper area the brake pedal will have to travel further to supply the additional fluid volume and move the larger pistons and may make the brake pedal "feel" seem like reduced braking, but really you just need to move the pedal more to engage the brakes. Obviously, a big change might mean the brake pedal hits the floorboard before it moves enough fluid to engage the larger piston calipers and that is not good either. A smaller caliper area will result in the brakes applying sooner in the brake pedal stroke if nothing else is changed, making the brakes "feel" more responsive, but will reduced the total applied force to the rotor and brake pad, but you won't stop as fast as a larger piston caliper setup will (assuming you have enough brake pedal travel). One possibility is that you can compensate for a smaller caliper piston this by using a brake pad with a higher coefficient of friction to get some of the lost braking force back or move the caliper further from the hub center-line and run a larger diameter rotor as another approach to get lost braking capacity back.

I doubt any of it matters since you really should compare it to the stock S10 brakes, not the donor vehicle’s brakes. It’s the master cylinder to caliper pairing that matters.

@@hotshtsr20 Also like he said. The reason he is using the chevy is the fact it is smaller so it uses less fluid compared to the huge ford caliper.
