How to build a LED Matrix Controller for WS2812 Pixels

This Video shows how to built a cheap Wifi LED-Matrix Controller. It is compatible with WS2811, WS2812 and WS2815 LEDs. The Controller is made of a ESP8266 based Board Wemos D1 Mini and a Level Shifter 74HCT125. The data line from the Wemos Board outputs 3.3V but the Pixel LEDs expect a 5V level. That's why a Level Shifter is needed. The Wemos Board is programmed with the ESPixelStick Firmware which is available on GitHub. The Controller can be used with Sequencing Programs like Xlights or Vixen.

On the level shifter IC you should ground all unused inputs to stop spurious oscillations etc

Thanks for the comment! I think a 100nF decoupling capacitor at the VCC Pin would be a good idea, too.

The program to upload the ESPixelStick Firmware is included in the downloaded folder. The file name is "ESPSFlashTool.jar"

Hi for the level shifter... is the 74hct125 the same with 74ahct125

The 74AHCT125 is a new version of the 74HCT125. Both can be used for the purpose of a level shifter.

There is a Micro SD Card Shield especially designed for the Wemos D1 Mini. Or you can get the latest ESPixelStick Hardware which has a SD Card Slot.
