Excellent video! This is the best videos I have seen to explain how to create a mantel. You take the time to explain what you are doing and show each step with good detail.

Thank you so much. We have a 200 year old house and someone along the way ripped out the mantel of the fireplace in the front room. This has given me so many ideas. The instructions were simple and easy to follow. Thanks again.

thanks for giving so much detail of how to build the mantel. We have a mantel shelf built 23 years ago when the house was built but we would like to add pillars and some of the other detailed work at the base

I was looking through youtube to see if there was a video that showed how to extend an existing mantle piece. I bought a reclaimed victorian one with cast iron inset. We removed the chimney breasts years ago, so I want to extend the fireplace outwards to have enough space to inset a fire grate beneath (hope that makes sense!). Despite this vid being instructions from scratch, I have still managed to glean some very useful tips for my project. Thank you so much.

Great video guys; I had to convert the m'ments to Metric...but drew up a very workable (and easy plan) just have to master the crown cuts {the mitre corners etc) I have some very nice wooden carved wood bits to add, I intend to paint it all white, just in time for Xmas; love mantle decorations so versatile; I intend to mount it on the wall by using structural timber on both sides of the wall and place the frame and nail it to those for supports; between the square cleats; should make it very secure - I managed to listen very carefully to garner all the m'ments and slowed the vid down to watch carefully the construction. Yours is by far the easiest on KZfaq. It will be a faux fireplace as in winter I will put an electric fire in the space may put a mdf backing on it yet to decide.

Excellent video and instructions... very helpful. I used this to replace a small mantel (without legs/posts) with one like this one to run TV wires thru. Finished results look great and kept me from having to cut into walls and fireplace rock to run wires. Thanks for the video!

+The Soul of Stacy The miter cuts at 15.20? They can be tricky for someone who hasn't done them before, b/c each end involves two angled cuts (aka compound cuts). You may want to search 'miter cuts' to get more info. Practice with scrap pieces first, until you get comfortable with the process.

I'm using construction adhesive to attach mine to brick. Apply the glue and push on the wood mantel piece. You can pull it back off and let the glue flash off it's solvent for 1-2 minutes then push it back on. It will grab on and draw in tighter as the adhesive cures. Use blue masking tape to hold it in place if needed.

I like this. My house came with a 2x8 for a mantle, and I'm going to replace it with something like what y'all did. But mine will have to be a bit different cover up unused vents from the old fireplace fan that hasn't worked in decades.

Real informative except how the heck would it get fixed to wall or would you put a vertical leg on wall and then wrap around it and then shoot the columns off from side

Can you give me some tips on attaching the mantel to a brick fireplace facade? The brick runs floor to ceiling
@jasonbell51528 жыл бұрын
How are you going to attach the surrounds and mantel to the wall, having now closed all in?
@neknifmom8 жыл бұрын
+Jason Bell Not sure what they did, but I would install cleats on the wall that fit inside the columns and then nail the columns to them. With lots of glue, of course.
@colbybud7 жыл бұрын
to prevent cupping of your freeze board do furring strips and nails prevent that?
@colbybud7 жыл бұрын
finished mine their design is good but for the mantel shelf i would use a 1 x 8. also your freeze board should be well shimmed to the wall.

I like this mantel. Can you guys supply me with a supply list and also what are the cuts measurements for the crown molding. Thank You.
@gasmanrm9 жыл бұрын
you dont need the measurements,you design your mantle to fit the fireplace its going on,then just cut to the lengths needed,a lot of the design features are just totally arbitrary,just pick what looks good to you
