Very cool video and nice job on the mantel. I worked at a place called Foster Mantels for 18 years in SF Bay Area. Best job ever working in the shop building custom sized mantels. Did everything there from build the mantels to working in the office doing up the shop work orders and production schedule to selling in the showroom on Saturdays. Miss it a lot. @@wesrobinson7366 if you get it sanded well the first time it hides the lines. But I think the end side of the MDF does absorb the paint different than the surface so a light sanding after the first coat might help with that. Absolutely love this one! I first was thinking of doing a faux fireplace, but when I talked about it with my mom she said "Why not an electric fireplace?" (I cannot go for a real wood burning one, mostly because I am renting AND have an apartment above me so an indoor chimney is not possible and even an outdoor chimney will most probably not get approved. But also because wood burning fireplaces are very expensive.) I have been looking at those electric build in fireplaces, and I might be able to do that. But I do want an actual mantle, and not the modern type where the fireplace is build into a solid wall thing from floor to ceiling. I want to put some decorations on top of the mantle. And Pinterest kept showing me those solid things, some with a floating shelf, some without. But this one you made is quite close to what I imagined and was trying to find an example of, to be able to show my brother. One day when I am ready to buy the build in and the MDF and other materials, this will make a nice sibling project 😊

@TMPK3 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! Yeah, table saws really help but you don’t need one for this. If you have the skills for a skil-saw or as some people call it, a circular saw, you can do this with that and a good saw guide. I feel like the cuts will never be quite as straight but with the right glue and sanding you can do it. I’ve built 100’s of mantels with a skip-saw before I finally decided it was time for the table saw 👍 thanks for watching!

I disagree. The nail gun was hardly vertically aligned with the given tempo and meter of the selected music repertoire. I’d be impressed if he could do that. I have a degree in music and I can’t make any of my pneumatic nailers work to be reliable percussion instruments. Maybe my battery powered Ryobi. That thing makes a better percussion instrument than it does a nailer. In all serious, It took me a few watches to get over the eccentricities of the video. Not my cup o’ tea. However, After 19 watches of the video and paying attention, I did build a kick ass fireplace. It is the best fireplace surround on KZfaq. Thank You!

Trying to build this and have watched this video several times over, great video. Question, would you say definitely use 3/4 mdf or would 1/2 work? Also, what size nails are you using? Doing 1/2 so far seems good but I’m afraid my nail size differs from yours and might compromise my build. Thanks for the video and thanks if you reply.
@TMPK2 жыл бұрын
I’ve never built one with half inch but it might be okay with 18gauge nails. I use 16 gauge with I think would make the 1/2 inch bulge. I think it’d be kind of hard to shoot a 2 inch nail perfectly in the middle of the half but if you can it might work out.

Jared, you inspired me to build this and I am just finishing up construction and thinking about painting the mantle surround. There is a lot of discussion on the best way to seal MDF to prevent swelling and prep for paint, so I thought I would ask the expert. What do you recommend? Thanks

I wish I knew! I’d just start with a primer and end with a semi-gloss. I don’t paint often but in my limited experience with painting mdf, it takes several coats, like at least 4. With light sanding in between coats. It’s not fun but it turns out so pretty 👌

I’m more impressed how you throw that 4x8 mdf around. Shits heavy

Absolutely talented editor. You make trim carpentry 10x more interesting to watch for viewers who originally have no interested in the trade.

if the wood working doesn't pan out, you can always go on tour playing the nailgun. Great job and thanks, taking notes for my next build...
