Very nicely done. I have been pondering doing something similar myself, but incorporated into a larger project to I;corporate about 50 or maybe 100mm internal wall insulation on a cold North facing wall. I have been reluctant to do it because we have a really nice traditional fireplace and mantle (we never ever used the fire as 90% of the heat went straight up the external chimney). Just trying to get my head round the ‘order of battle’ and then biting the bullet of taking out the rather beautiful fireplace. I had to laugh at some of the rather childish comments some have made to your short video - you should give them their money back🤣 Thank you for sharing your approach with us.😀👍

Great vid, a question though, with something like a games console that ideally needs to breathe and vent how would you tackle this?
@mediawalls2u Жыл бұрын
Good question. With consoles/dvd players/sky boxes etc, I usually build a hidden shelf within the tv recess for these to discreetly sit on, always accessible due to the pivot tv bracket and I always leave minimum 25mm gap all the way round the tv recess for ventilation
@nicobyr1 Жыл бұрын
Hi, what kind of wood do you recommend for this? Is there anywhere you recommend buying the wood from? Is that just plaster board too? I'm in the UK and wanting to do this in my front room ☺️
@mediawalls2u Жыл бұрын
Hi, I would recommend using cls 3x2 timber lengths, you could possibly get these from b&q. Also all the media walls I build are plastered finishes. Take a look at some of my work online “Mediawalls2u” Lots of ideas on there that may help you 😀
@Shane_Marsh4 ай бұрын
Great build mate. Is there any issues with the t.v. from the heat of the fire below ?
@mediawalls2u4 ай бұрын
Thank you. No problem with the heat as these fires are designed to blow the heat downwards from the front vents. The tv will not get hot at all from that
@PhilSheringham Жыл бұрын
Hi pal. You've inspired me to give it a go 😬🤞 Is it just personal preference whether to use either plasterboard or mdf and is it a 20mm gap around the TV- top, bottom and sides? Cheers.
@mediawalls2u Жыл бұрын
Hi Phil, that’s good to know mate and I wish you well on your build, here to help if I can in any way 👍🏻 Personally I would suggest plasterboard as MDF can work out more expensive and unless your very precise with your cuts could end up leaving gaps. I leave roughly 25mm gap all the way around the tv.

As the fire is closed into the actual timber/boarding, where does the heat come from as it usually comes from the top of the fire. Looks really nice, mine has built in fire too but i don't use the heat source just the coal effect lighting.

Most people do use the fires for the visual effect, although the heat come from the vents at the front of the fire

I had a question if there’s no studs behind sheet rock where we want the edges to be against the wall can we put some 2x6s in between both outer 2x4 and add another 2x6 overlapping each other and screwing those 2x6s on the inner studs to support the wall? I was able to screw top and bottom plates along with joists but I’m worried of it not supporting it since it doesn’t have those two 2x4s screwed on vertically besides top and bottom plate.
@mediawalls2u4 ай бұрын
In situations like this it is far better to use expanding foam as dries solid. This way you wouldn’t need to screw into the stud work 👍🏻

On another note, worst case scenario that your fire place breaks and need replacement, how do you go about? Will you have to take the entire media wall down to remove and replace it ?

The worst case would be to run a multi tool around the frame where the fire is and slide the fire out. Would possibly need a bit of filling when replaced but nothing too major

@mediawalls2u Жыл бұрын
I don’t have a materials plan as every build is different, as a guide I’d suggest cls timber studwork, wood screws, raw plugs and fixing screws, plasterboards screws, plasterboard, most electric recessed fires blow the heat downwards from the front so a clearance I’d suggest maybe 200mm above for the tv
