About Joseph Carlson:
I am not a professional investor and have never claimed to be. I'm an amateur investor sharing my experience of what I've learned, where I have had success, and where I've had failures. I share my thoughts on investing and performance with transparency. My approach and goal to investing is to buy high-quality long-term investments in world-class businesses that I call "compounders". I view my investments as businesses, not as stocks. Before creating content on KZfaq full time I worked as a senior-level programmer for 8 years. Over the years as a programmer, I compounded my knowledge of development. I take the same iterative learning approach to my study of investing. I study investing as a craft in the continual pursuit of being better. I will make mistakes in investment decisions from time to time. Results are not guaranteed. Please do not blindly follow me into any investments, and make sure your portfolio and investments are built around your specific income, risk tolerance, personality, and timeline, and overall circumstances.

Forget kidneys, I could just pawn one of my extraordinarily large brass testicles for a cool mill and a half. -Buy a large yacht, fill it with Hoe's, shoot a pop culture musical video. While also selling the documentary film rights to the whole process. After filming (and editing of course) get my literal nut back outta hock, broker the yacht, "stiff" the Hoe's, short the film crew, then retire with the appreciative value of the brass metal weight vs inflation and start a divvy fund. Whaddaya think Mr J.C. is this a sound investment and business strategy? Do you want to contribute some seed funds to drum up ad money for launching this venture?

What is the investment vehicle for your portfolio. Is this within a Roth IRA. I'm 58 and don't have much saved but I'm making 85k and Really need to get something going for retirement as far as passive income. Do you have a video on actually setting something up in a little more detail. I will be working for a while yet. Thank you.

The main focus for markets now is Nvidia, which has powered a large chunk of the S&P 500’s recent earnings. Nvidia’s stock, up more than 90% this year, rose 2.5% in New York on Monday, sending the Nasdaq 100 index to another record high. I'm still looking for companies to make additions to my $350K portfolio, to boost performance. Here for ideas...

Safest approach i feel to tackle it is to diversify investments. By spreading investments across different asset classes, like bonds, real estate, and international stocks, they can reduce the impact of a market meltdown.

It's a common misconception that when a stock you buy skyrockets, the smart thing to do is sell it (or at least sell some of it) to lock in your profits. But the context matters. If the stock has increased sharply because the business is performing exceptionally well, it could still be a bargain. I'm still looking for companies to make additions to my $350K portfolio, to boost performance. Here for ideas...

I like investing in close-end funds that pay monthly dividends. The trick is to hold long term and reinvest the monthly dividends plus buy more shares on a monthly basis or when ever you can afford to. This can be easily done because close-end funds are bought and sold on the stock market just like regular stock. That’d be enough to create a portfolio that would pay you between $50k to $70k in dividend income

My perspective on dividends is that they may not be beneficial if a company has better uses for its capital to promote growth. I suggests investing in companies with growth potential. However. It's possible to create a portfolio that generates a dividend income of $50,000-70,000 with less than $200,000 investment.

i agree, that's the more reason I prefer my day to day invesmentt decisions being guided by a financial advisor, seeing that their entire skillset is built around going long and short at the same time both employing risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying off risk as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, coupled with the exclusive information/analysis they have, it's near impossible to not out-perform, been using a fin-advisor for over 2years+ and I've netted over $1.8million.

Dividends are a great thing, but they’re only really effective for passive income when you either have somewheres over 20 to 25 thousand shares of a high yielding stock. Meaning you likely need to have a few hundred thousand if not more invested in it. Re-investing dividends back into the same stock certainly does snowball with compound interest, but you only really start seeing it after 20 years of never stopping and likely needing to add additional money of your own with it….so it’ll be time consuming and costly. The way I see it if you have a million dollars at some point, that’d be enough to create a portfolio that would pay you between 50 to 70 thousand in dividend income

It's not difficult, but you have to learn and handle. Another thing is that if you can't manage your home, maybe you shouldn't invest on your own. If so, you should hire a CFP to help you diversify your assets to include ETFs/index funds/mutual funds and stocks of companies with consistent cash flows, rather than betting on penny stocks.

Its worse here, our economy is like a flailing fish, fighting for its life. The normal state of the U.S. economy is actually very bad. Because of this it goes into convulsive spasms fighting to grow any way it can out of desperation. Tricks, gimmicks, rule changes try to stimulate the economy and prevent it from falling but they only bring temporary relief to people since, when you factor in inflation we are declining.

The market is not necessarily a rollercoaster if you know your way around the market, there are various opportunities in the present market to accrue good profit, If you are not too savvy with the market, just buy and hold on strong companies with good earnings, or consult with advisors on ETFs and actively managed funds. that’s what works for my spouse and I. The most popular investment portfolio strategies include diversification, where you spread investments across different asset classes to manage risk. Another is the growth strategy, focused on capital appreciation through high-risk, high-reward assets. Income-oriented strategies target regular income from dividend stocks or bonds. Finally, there's the value strategy, seeking undervalued assets for potential long-term gains.

According to Warren Buffett, dividends are less valuable for growing businesses and more suitable for established ones. Investing in companies that offer dividends might be seen as parking capital for steady returns, especially for those relying on portfolio income. This approach resembles bond investing, serving as a means of generating consistent earnings.

I know this sounds a bit dull but I would like to know if I should learn investing or let somebody else (more capable like a FA) do it for me? Please share your thoughts. I am kind of tired of searching for a good stock to buy and losing all the good opportunities.

I'm a big fan of dividend growth stocks. The myth is that there is no growth in dividend paying stocks, not true at all. I saw 20 even 30% stock value, on top of some of the dividends paid by some of my dividend paying stocks this year. The best thing about dividend paying stocks is when they do dip my dividend yield goes up and I can load up and increase the rate of return. I also never have to sell the stock to receive the profits from dividends so I get the return over and over and over. Unlike regular stocks that I have to sell and only see profit once, at the time of sale. Once they are sold they are gone folks. There are also tax benefits to long term holdings. I'm really grateful to then efforts of my advisor , Susan Kay Mack helping me reach my 7 figure milestone . Wishing peace and prosperity to you and yours.

I have been dividend investing since 1986, 37 years now. I have to say this is VERY on target. I can't tell you how many people I have met who just focus almost exclusively on the current yield. Bad mistake. 1, Look for revenue growth, EPS growth, dividend GROWTH. Find low payout ratios. The combination of revenue growth and a low payout ratio means the company will likely have a lot of room to grow the dividend well into the future. Very important to understand the difference between the current yield and the yield-to-cost. Wayne Gretzky said it best, "don't skate to where the puck is, skate to where it is going." 2. When you reinvest dividends that is compounding. Everyone understands compounding. When you combine that with... THEY KEEP INCREASING WHAT THE DIVIDEND IS... think of it as compounding squared. Good video.

NVIDIA is a balloon. They don't have any tangible AI development. They don't have an edge in hardware. Its all selling of news, smoke and mirrors. I know people inside of the industry and all they talk about is opensource this and that. FAANG is the sacrificial bull that's going to collapse our economy when they flip the switch. Everyone knows ASML controls chips but none of that actually matters when patents collapse and information is made free by real ai projects in defi/depin space. Chip plants don't cost billions to build. Maybe a couple million. Maybe even a couple hundred thousand after this new wave hits. And they'll be springing up everywhere. NVIDIA simply has no moat without government mafia to protect them and fomoing into it and other AIAAS (as a service) - won't just get you wrekt, it will be a matter of survival to have ownership of digital assets and involved in communities like ICP.

eh you make it sound like those stocks aren't risky. How aren't they? Nvidia seems to just be pulling forward a decade or so of growth into one year. Pretty soon they run out of people to sell at this pace too. Then the rest of the world realizes that AI isn't cost effective, that good, or the jobs they want to automate away don't exist anymore because they already got automated with SQL processes and python (last case being my job)

The fastest way to build dividends is to have some high growth stocks like TSLA and AAPL and rebalance the profits into dividend companies or funds. I just rebalanced my portfolio recently and moved some nice profit from this rally into more dividend funds, which are pretty cheap right now. I bought alot more dividend funds than if I had just reinvested dividends and didn't have any high growth. I do 50/50 right now but as I get older I'll lower my high growth percentage to increase my income and lower risk.

This is a lot, but please read until the end. I'm only 26 minutes in but first, let me state that Joseph's advice appears to assume a continuous bullish market. He glosses over "pandemic" without emphasizing on recession resistance in the stock markets. Also, he appears to have a very dangerous mindset that these companies will live on indefinitely, but in a Capitalist, free-market economy, all companies will live, breathe, and die. No one company is safe from competition and/or economic evolution. I disagree with a commenter's advice on getting a financial advisor because if a repeat of 2008 happens, most advisors will be under water due to never have experienced it themselves. What I recommend is to learn how to cover down-trends with shorting the market. That way you will be prepared for the market regardless of bullish or bearish conditions. Shorting a stock doesn't reward you a dividend, but it will hedge against the drop in price on the stock that does reward you a dividend. For example, stock ABC is paying out a dividend of $1 per share (or it could just be on a bearish trend and you're a bag-holder by default as a dividend investor). At the same time, maybe the market is down, so stock XYZ is bearish. You can then sell XYZ into a short position to hedge against the unrealized loss of stock ABC. In a bullish market you could just go long on XYZ. NOTE: You cannot sell short a stock you already own. It will close out your position if you try. Alternatively, you could research covered calls and covered puts for options trading, but without a vast amount of proper experience in the markets, there's somewhere around like a 98% chance that you will bankrupt your account. Options are intended as a way to hedge and/or add leverage to your trades/investments. They are not intended for separate trading. I learned that one the hard way.

I am new to the stock market. Every stock that I bought so far, I was out of luck because I bought them when they were expensive. I feel I missed out on all the stock opportunities so far for the tech stocks.I believe having 175K yearly income would be a good investment so I want to plug all my savings into the stock market. I know this sounds a bit dull but I would like to know if I should learn investing or let somebody else (more capable like a FA) do it for me? Please share your thoughts. I am kind of tired of searching for a good stock to buy and losing all the good opportunities

Even with the right technique and assets some investors would still make more than others, as an investor, you should’ve known that by now, nothing beats experience and that’s final, personally I had to reach out to a stock expert for guidance which is how I was able to grow my account close to a million, withdraw my profit right before the correction and now I’m buying again

I use a different strategy, I used a high/low yield strategy. I invest in MAIN, PFLT and JEPI for income. I use SCHD, NOBL and VTI for growth. I don't want research companies and keep looking at who is doing well. I leave that for managers of funds. At the end I use BND and TIP to hedge down turns in the market. 8 ETFs that I can manage without looking for gems in the marketplace. I do smaller investments with FTCO, SACH, HRZN and ZIM. So, I use a high/low strategy so I don't need $1M to retire. Your strategy doesn't work with low income salaries and the need to be able to turn cash quickly.

You are flat out a victim of high finance and the logical fallacies adopted by the mass public, of which the products you purchase are marketed to. You should really read a few books on financial theory my dude. The market is massively efficient in these broad products and your logic on the matter tells me you don’t have the skills nor the understanding to do what you think you are capable of. If you have a family your stewardship of your family’s savings is of a most serious matter. Don’t fu*k it up.

I think a reason why you could get criticised for buying such low dividend companies is because in my opinion the strategy you are outlining isn't a 'dividend investor' strategy. You are not investing for the dividends at all - in fact, as I see it, you could as well buy into companies that do not pay any dividends whatsoever. Your gain and what you look for, as you point out in the video, comes from the growth of the underlying business, not from the businesses distribution of wealth to its shareholders. In other words, this strategy should perhaps be better described as a 'fundamentals driven large cap growth' - strategy. You invest in established large cap companies that you deem to have low risk and good potential for growth in the future based on business fundamentals. When I think what a meanful description of a 'dividend investor' would be, it would have to be someone who is investing with the main purpose being to grow their portfolio through the distribution of wealth from their ownership shares. For example, a company that has reached its natural marked limit and only grows with GDP whilst paying out its excess cash flows every year to its owners, or a company that for other reasons do not focus mainly on reinvesting its earnings. And I think you are very right in your criticism that this kind of investing quickly can turn into investing in companies that not only have a saturated marked but indeed is stagnating and might contract.

Important question I really hope I can get a quick answer to!! What about SCHD? Do you invest in ETFs that have bundles of stocks in order to diversify just a little bit more?? Do you feel the returns are simply better investing in these companies directly??

If you wanna be successful, you most take responsibility for your emotions, not place the blame on others. In addition to make you feel more guilty about your faults, pointing the finger at others will only serve to increase your sense of personal accountability. There's always a risk in every investment, yet people still invest and succeed. You must look outward if you wanna be successful in life.

one critique: those div growth companies only could increase their payouts in the way they did cus those companies were that successful during that period. the div growth % wouldn't be that impressive if the stock prize did not increase along with it. in retrospect a decade ago verizon and at&t surely were considered a safer option. That's why I like to diversify more in adding some "safer" higher yielding stocks. overall, your personal age is also always an important factor to consider in your portfolio strategy.

I embarked on my dividend journey upon recognizing that two specific budgetary expenses, taxes, and insurance, were consistently on the rise and unlikely to decrease. Acknowledging the need for additional income to counteract the significant increases in both, I began acquiring shares that pay dividends. I now envision this as the path to ensure that these two expenses do not surpass my future income.

I grew up on military bases all my life, so I was accustomed to what's usually offered on base as far as restaurants and shops. Yet I was actually surprised when my parents told me there's a Texas Roadhouse up in JBLM in WA. But then I thought of how perfect of a fit that was. Usually there's only fast food places, but the value TRH offers even at a sit down restaurant is tremendous, and is sure to appeal to value-seeking military families that live on base (and this is a big one). Needless to say, I'm told the place gets lots of business.

You mentioned you take your income and re-invest specifically in the positions that aren't doing as well (like VICI). So does that mean you don't have your investments set to re-invest dividend income and you do it yourself manually, thus choosing WHERE to focus your dividend income? Or are you not using dividend profits to make additional purchases and instead add more money to your portfolio in order to invest specifically in those not doing as well? Thanks.

Joseph! I think your more of quality company investor at a reasonable price than a true dividend investor. The first thing I see you look at is the quality of the company first, dividend is nice to have but not necessary if I have to guess you would choose a high quality company that doesn't pays any dividend over a similar quality company that does pay a dividend, no? Without dividends, and if company has high ROIC it's more tax efficient for that company to retain the cash and invest internally. for example you own NFLX, AMAZON both that don't pay dividends.
@JosephCarlsonShow
@JosephCarlsonShow Жыл бұрын
The story fund was set up specifically to be a portfolio not to be centered around dividend income. I made it to show a different style of analysis and content. You are right. Far more of my time is spent assessing the quality and fundamentals of a company than the dividend. But keep in mind the dividend is mostly an output metric. Companies pay dividends after earning the cash for pay it. In order for a company to pay a dividend, or do buybacks, they need to earn money, earning money on a consistent and growing basis is what I’m looking for, which leads to paying a growing dividend. So I would argue that they go hand in hand. You can’t confidently build a dividend growth portfolio without first trying to determine which companies will keep growing the dividend, and to make that determination you need to study the qualities of the company.
@mattnelson8740
@mattnelson8740 Жыл бұрын
Joseph, I’ve been a fan for a long time and really think you’re message of looking for quality dividend growth stocks is a great one. However I disagree that many high yielders are value traps. I’ve been watching your videos long enough to remember when you sold out of Exxon Mobil at near lows because you believed it was a value trap. I believe that some of the best investments are buying when there is “blood in the streets” and the stock is throughly depressed and almost every investor is out on it as that’s where real value exists. I wouldn’t be so quick to write off T and VZ as the next 10 years could be much more lucrative than the last 10 years.
