This video is the second part of the how to build a plywood ball series. I will show you how I assemble the triangles and glue them up into a plywood ball in real time. The resulting icosahedron or d20 will be sanded on a lathe to make it smooth in part 3.

Thanks 👍🏼 I have built a few 24” diameter spheres, but not a 30” yet. Check out my “guy builds a big big ball” video, it is a 19”

This is great cant wait to make one I seen a giant wooden structure down in Webster Florida about 20 feet tall in the shape of a golf ball a bunch of triangles made up of 3 boards so its not closed in so I look it up on KZfaq and it brought me to your video which is cooler than I imagined it could be great job

Wow, I didn't know they made titebond extend. I'll have to try it next time I glue up a shape.

This is amazing how you make this I just can’t get my mind around how you came up with all the different things you have to do and build to get a wooden ball, how did you come up with all this and how many times did you mess up before getting it right, then you had to come up with all the sanding tools , just amazing , so building the big ball is completely different? I would love to see that build, thanks for the videos

Thanks James, I’ve always had an interest in geometry and woodworking. It took several years and 12 big balls before I had one that came together without a bunch of open joints. I’ve built 100+ of them in the past 10 years. I also like to design and build the special tools to make the process easier. This is my first “how to video”. The larger balls have 180 triangles and 4 different bevel angles, so I started with the simpler 20 triangle icosahedron. Thanks for watching. 👍🏼

What measurements do you suggest for a 24 inch ball. Thanks in advance.

A 24” icosahedron would be about a 7-8 inch triangle. You couldn’t use 3/4 inch material though. You would sand through the corners because it is not round enough to begin with. You would need to build a truncated icosahedron. Here is a website to help with that. geo-dome.co.uk/3v_tool.asp
