Thanks for such a good series of teaching videos! We are so fortunate you had an issue with the joint at the end - it gave us a chance to see how you handle issues! Now, I gotta go search for your sanding jig. I made some Dreidel tops a while back an I couldn't figure any way to round them of but your sander would have been perfect.

This is a fascinating set of videos. I've got to try this. I'm fortunate that I am a wood turner and I've turned solid spheres by hand. Thank you for sharing this

@@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams I just made 2. I've turned one into a sphere. I've got a few gaps but nothing a bit of CA glue won't sort out. A very enjoyable project. Thanks for your instruction and inspiration

Awesome tutorial. I have made some wooden soccer balls using 32 individual pieces (20 hexagons and 12 pentagons). I’d like to try your triangle method.
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks👍🏼 less pieces but still has a cool look. The diameter would be limited unless thicker stock was used.

Ever consider making one from bamboo plywood? Would be interested to see what external patterns would develop. Great series. Thank you

it would be further enhanced using spectraply, although more expensive. Nevertheless a great project which I’ll have to try myself. Actually Keith, this was a very clear explanation and demonstration, you are a great teacher.

When I first started building the larger spheres, I made about 6 before I had a structurally sound ball. By the 12th attempt I had one that didn’t have a bunch of open joints. I’ve had a lot of practice since then. The ball in this video was the third one I’d built using the icosahedron layout. The 5” spheres are much easier to get right.

How large can your diameter go with 3/4” plywood without sanding through?
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams

With the icosahedron layout, 5” is about max.
