I needed more rack space for some audio gear so I picked up some rack rails and threw together this simple rack to put everything in.
I didn't put exact links to anything I used since I picked up the rails second hand and had the plywood already, but you can look around for the size of rails you want and the best deal.

this video gave me a better idea for how i want to setup my home server since server/equipment racks are somewhat expensive for what is basically a box.

I guess the negative comments about having access to good tools are just afraid of a little sweat and elbow grease. If it's not effortless, I guess it's not worth doing. Truth is this project can be done with any rusty old screwdriver and anything capable of cutting plywood (hand saw, steak knife, etc...). There will always, always be people who "don't" standing around complaining about people who "do." Roll up your sleeves, let some sweat drip off your nose onto the wood, and be proud of building something with you own two hands. Or just complain on the internet about not having a workshop full of tools. To each their own.

@@MerwinMusic Truth is you don't need ANY saw to do this project. You should have mentioned than pretty much any big box hardware store that sells plywood will cut it to whatever dimensions you want before you even walk out the door with it!

@@DaveChurchill true, I have noticed at least in the lowes near me they have precut 2x4 and plywood for projects. it is actually labelled as such.

Hey there, I just found this video as I'm doing some research to put together a rack myself. I was wondering, do the rack rails support the gear installed well enough by themselves, or is there a support system you installed for the backside? Seems like with how heavy the rack eq are, they'd need it, but I'm new to rack gear so I wouldn't know

This is a very good video. I gave someone the link for this and they ignored it. SMH!!! My question is what number sand paper did you use to sand the wood before painting. Would all types of wood need sanding?

great stuff - thanks! Where can I buy cheap, really long, rails? I am thinking about a rack about 4 or 5 feet tall. Is there a non-standard thing that I can grab at home depot that can stand in for a "real" rack rail?
@chrisdoutre101
@chrisdoutre101 9 ай бұрын
I have made my own rack rails in the past. Believe me, you want to use commercial rails! Life is too short to reproduce rails at this precision with the weird screw spacing. If you want 4 feet of rack space, feel free to use pairs of 2-foot rack rails; they might be cheaper to ship. Note to Merwin Music: I really appreciate how efficient you are in producing this educational video that gets to the point quickly.

If adding capitalization and apostrophes to a negative KZfaq comment is too much work, then it makes sense that using a handsaw and screwdriver are completely out of the question. Roll up your sleeves dude, I promise you can do it. You'll be proud you made something with your own hard work! :)
