Upgrades to my first solar projector. I took it down to the Waterfront Park, Portland, Oregon for a show-and-tell with video clips and pictures from that event.

cool, let me know how it goes and let me know if you have any questions. I'm designing an upgrade soon, will post when done as the sun is getting into it's 11 year sunspot cycle.

Your design is terrific! I built one based on your description and it works great! My version uses a 2"x2" fir strip as backbone. Its about 6ft long. I lean it against a ladder for stability. I built my projection box with black dollar store foam board. I used opera style binoculars with one optical path blocked off. It's easy to focus. I saw 2 sun spots. The sun image is about 5" in diameter. Thanks again for your fantastic video.

Hey that's awesome especially seeing sunspots!! It's cool you used the materials you had at hand and modifying it to work for you. I'm going to set up a solar projector web page, email me a pic of your set up and I'll post it on my website when I set it up...efrain@palermoproject.com.

I used the base of my 12" Dobsonian telescope, and a combo of 6 inch and 4 inch PVC piping. I used a short 500mm focal length 4" diameter telescope instead of binoculars, but my main tube wasn't long enough to get focus so I had to panic and use a chunk of 1.5" piping and tape to extend the eyepiece until focus was achieved. :D Finished just in time for the eclipse to begin. My viewing box is made of scrap wood siding panels, as was the far end mounting point. The inside of the box is 14x14 inches, 24 inches deep. I was limited to my choice of eyepieces after the duct tape extension. :) But I was pleased with the large enough image...8 inches, maybe larger. Hopefully this link will show a quick shot of the setup while I figure out how to host pics online: facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10155728179532074&set=a.10150107393372074.294758.804587073&type=3

Efrain, I used your concept to build a solar projector, I used to observe this past Aug 21th partial Eclipse in Monterrey, Mexico. Thanks!

I would like to share the type of base I built so it had 360 degree turn and almost 180 degree elevation movement , it was a quick prototype , where can I send you pics?

Great! One thing. What if you use a counterweight on a rod, that you are using to mount your projector to a workhorse? This way you could probably eliminate your tripod to keep whole thing from tipping. By the way What is monocular you are using? Rifle scope? Details? Thank you very much.

Josh Littlefield I was using yesterday just to see if that works and how, and I used finder scope 6x 30. Sun burned a rainbow into objective lens. Did something like that happened to your monocular or binocs? Thank you for answering.
@efrainpalermo7 жыл бұрын
I don't think finder scopes are good for this purpose, I've had good luck with binoculars and the monocular with out any burnout. My next project is to use a refractor telescope and I read that there can be heat build up inside the tube but no lens damage.

I know this is a rather old post, but I was curious of the distance between the eyepiece and the viewing screen. If it was in the video I missed it but was just curious as I'm planning to build this exact design, as I have the same monocular that you have used here.
@efrainpalermo Жыл бұрын
Hi there, sorry I didn’t see this sooner but the distance between is variable but within the 10 foot span of an aluminum downspout. How deep is the receiving end is a factor so the way I did it was to first set the projector receiving end and then I build a slider on the downspout with the monocular attached facing the sun until I got the image sized on my plate. Let me know if you built it yet or have any further questions.

@@efrainpalermo Thanks for the response, and now I've taken a while to respond to YOU. Lol. I apologize. I have not yet put this together. I'll most likely use a piece of wood because I have a lot of that to use, and not a downspout. I'm glad to see that it can be such a long distance, because I was hoping for a rather large solar disc image! Thanks again!

Your Solar Projector looks great! Question: What kind of monocular are you using? Brand, and magnification. Is it a monocular or a gun scope? I didn't see any mounting rails on monoculars I looked at, so I was thinking that it might be a gun scope. Thanks! Are you going to see the eclipse on Aug 21st with your projector. I'm going to Nashville. Should be a blast!

Thanks John, I used a Bushnell Legend Ultra HD Monocular, Black, 10 x 42-mm I ordered off Amazon, this model came with mounting rails which made it very convenient. Im going down to Lincoln City on the Oregon coast which is in the path of totality however crossing my fingers it won't be cloudy! Good luck at your location:)

That's a nice monocular Are you concerned that the heat from shining the sun thru the monocular will damage it? I really like the large, bright, crisp image that you get. Could I get a decent image using a $40 monocular w/the same magnification, compared to your $300 monocular? Thanks! I was thinking about using this one: a.co/65T7uIr

From my research sunlight doesn't damage the lenses however it will heat up the air in a longer tube, like a refractor telescope but the solution to that would be to block the sun periodically. I've had the monocular pointed at the sun for hours with no after-effects. I like the monocular you want to use, actually my first projector used a 10x42mm binocular and the image was great. The only suggestion would be to attach a picatinny rail to it if you want to be able to remove it, otherwise you can make it permanent mount with whatever you have at hand. If you build one please send me pics! :)

I'm impressed with the design. Oh I'm so inspired to build one for Monday's eclipse. Some friends and I will be driving from LA to Baker City, OR.
@efrainpalermo7 жыл бұрын
Be cool if you could build it for the eclipse and it could also be used to study the sun once the eclipse comes and goes:)
