How to Build a Tiny Pole Barn in 5 MINUTES | Chicken House Plans
A few of you asked me to put the chicken coop build series together into one fast build video so I finally got around to it. This pole barn project was a lot of fun to build and has been a rewarding addition to the farm. For anyone who asks, "Can I build my own pole barn?" The answer is yes! Post frame constructions is simple and straight forward. This is a total DIY project and with a little foresight, you can build the pole barn chicken coop of your dreams. My wife loves it and has such an easier time taking care of the chickens and the kids love collecting the eggs now, without going into the coop. Hope you enjoy this small pole barn build video and I hope you can put the chicken house plans to good use on your own property.

Well done. One problem: It looked like you used the same screws for your joist hangers. The shear strength of most screws is not up to any code. The steel is too brittle. Even if 'tacked' with screws, metal hangers must be secured with nails.

I'm a single woman who usually does everything myself due to labor costs and..... you just can't get anyone to work! I've done a little of everything but never framed anything. Awe, thanks Karen. You can definitely do this. Too often, we look at the whole project and get overwhelmed but really it’s a fairly simple process. Start by marking out a square, put 4 posts in the ground, and just go from there. One step at a time!

Which is it, you do it yourself because you don't want to spend money on it or because you can't get ppl to work? I know tons of carpenters, contractors, handyman types who are all looking for side work. Also why was it necessary to start off telling everyone you're a single woman? How / why is that relevant? @@pauveje I used screws because I don't have a nail gun and was on my own so it was tough to use a hammer in some cases. Once the screws were in, I went back and hammered in nails. Even took out some screws and replaced with nails for extra shear strength. The nails are for shear strength.

I also like how they walk you through the many different steps of construction, which is important for the less experienced like me.

That’s the nicest chicken coop I ever saw! I wouldn’t mind that same framework to build a small greenhouse. It wouldn’t need the flooring. I’m really impressed with your workmanship.

Thanks so much! It turned out nice and is more than just a chicken coop. It serves as a small barn to hold all the supplies and feed for the chickens too, as well as an area to collect and store eggs out of the rain and weather.

You can build a green house with pvc pipe and clear plastic. Much cheaper than buying wood.

Very impressive carpentry. I like simplicity of the roof framing. I Probably would have thrown a bag or two of quickcrete into the post holes but I'm sure you know your soil situation. Well done sir.

I've done a lot of fencing and building on my place and this is the first job that I didn't put concrete in the bottom of the holes. At the time, I was thinking that it's just a chicken coop and I dug down over 2 feet until it was hard and rocky. I'm convinced that it was and is solid enough for this building but in hindsight I wish I would have done that just because I build most things overkill. As I think back, it's kind of strange to me that I decided not to put concrete in the holes. I guess we do some strange things sometimes, haha.

Thanks Krystal! It might be a little deceptive. I make these videos for education and entertainment but it actually took several months to complete. I worked on it a few hours a day through the winter. Just took my time and took it step by step. You could absolutely do this!

I love that you built a multiple nest box. I did that on my first chicken coop with 12 hens and they all laid in the same box. Every day. Even sat on and laid eggs on top of broody hens.

Haha, chickens are funny. We get multiple hens laying in the same boxes too but so far all the nest boxes have had eggs in them. They do have favorites though.

We share the same opinion. I’m a vet as well. You wouldn’t know it by my videos but I spend a great deal of time alone and quiet due to things I don’t talk about. One suggestion is to Put your shelf right below the lid for the nesting boxes, that way you just slide your basket down it as you gather the eggs.

For a automatic door, I recommend the Omlet door. I bought one a couple of months ago and It works great. I like it because the door moves sideways and not up and down.. You can put it on the outside or inside as I did.

Your chickens would love to have the angles planed off their roosting 2x boards. Doesn't take much. Hand planer or electric one. "Rounded" surfaces accommodate their feet, and and how they grip much better. 👍🏼 Looks great.

I used a 1/2in round over router bit for mine. Leaves a perfectly round comfortable edge that is easy on the chickens feet. I made sure to do a good amount of research to ensure I made the roosts comfortable for the chickens since it's where they will be sleeping every night. Not too Wide but not too narrow with soft rounded corners for them to comfortable grip.

I like using tree limbs, everywhere possible, helps prevent stiffness. Might need a closet pole hanger set if nails split limbs.

Beautiful job! I haven't seen updates yet, so take my comment with a grain of salt and grace. 2 updates I'd say your wife would love: skip the latches for the nest box lids go straight to heavy duty magnets. Trust me. Makes life SO much easier. The second, cut a long door (ala nest box door) along the wall adjacent to the roosts. It'll give your wife easier access to clean, have them fold upwards so the hinges don't get fouled, and she can put a wheeler trailer or heavy duty wheelbarrow right underneath and rake all that mess right outside without having to hassle with the roosts and doors. Enjoyed your video tons! Great design there! Love from Alaska!

Thanks so much, and glad you enjoyed it! The magnets are a fantastic idea and I really need to complete this thing, lol. I am seriously thinking about the magnets. As far as cleaning, it's essentially set up like you mentioned with the back door. She very easily sweeps it all out the door. I do like your idea though, for not having to deal with the roosts or nest boxes. Something to consider for sure. The linoleum (although a little more costly) is a massive game changer. It's so slick that she's able to just sweep everything away in a couple strokes of the broom. Thanks for the comment and ideas!

Love your wrap around building process, I'm planning this type of building for a tiny house. You nail on the outside and inside of the post creating space for insulation. This is the easiest way to build, but you went way extra. Great job!!

A cut list would be ideal!! I am still amazed with the chicken coop! My challenge here in Utah is hard winters, avian predators, coyotes, bobcats, people's dogs, weasels and ring-tailed cats. Oh and those pesky grey bushy tailed squirrels 😖

I hear ya. We are having similar problems this winter with racoons. Never had issues in the past and now they've found the chicken run. Nothing that a little hot wire won't fix. Shellie sheds a new tear each day as she goes out and finds another chicken carcass. They are her babies. We may have to raise a few more chicks this spring to replace the lost souls. I'll have to come up with a materials list for this project as I get that request a lot. When I originally built it, I didn't have plans, just build it as I went but had a general idea of what I wanted. Maybe I can put a video together about it with a materials list included.

@@cwr8618 It was our fault. We weren't closing the door at night. Haven't had a problem leaving it open for 2 years and for some reason this year we've run into trouble. We now close the hen door every night and haven't had a problem since. Time to get an automatic door installed.

If you are adding an automatic door, add a web camera so you can see if the system malfunctions. Sometimes if the weather is overcast, the light sensor causes the door to close before the chickens put themselves to bed. in that case, you will have chickens locked out. The other alternative is use the timer function instead of the light sensor to trigger the door opening and closing.

@@MikeKincaid79 A'ight have a motion detector on the outside that works for about 15 minutes when the timer is set for bedtime, so the chickens can go in but not out. Have a bell or some other sound go off to let them know it is time to come in. Any that don't make it in within 15 minutes will regret having to sleep outside all night and that'll learn 'em. Then a different bell alerts them and the door opens until bedtime. The door closes and the motion detector lets them come in but only for 15 minutes and then they are locked in for the night. Disclaimer: I'm not a chicken therapist so I'm not sure if my idea will be acceptable to normal chickens. Any chickens outside of normal will probably just get eaten at night which will solve the rebellion problem one chicken at a time. THEY MUST ALL CONFORM OR DIE!!

I sometimes look at the cashiers at the stores and they can't even go to the restroom when they need...must wait for their break, must let the manager, director and the president know they need to pee...I guess if people can do this so can the chickens. This is really close to what I’ve been looking for to build an off grid cottage at our bug out spot. We have a larger shed-to-cabin there but I wanted something as a quiet sitting room for me.

This would be great for a small cabin. If you were going to live in it then I'd expand the dimensions to 16x16 but otherwise, it's a nice size. It would also be cool to extend the roof line out another 6 feet and create a front porch.

Nice job! I think I’ll build the same thing for a run in shed for my horses! Won’t need a floor but that’s a damn sturdy structure! For the hinges on the nesting boxes I used small hood hinges on my chicken boxes. Just lift and they hold up nicely and close easily

Use to do this for a living. I've built hundreds of pole barns. Me and 2 other men could build a 30×30 in a day. Drilling holes and setting posts. 10 hour day, including doors and windows. Little stick frames were a peice of cake.

Yeah, you guys in the trade are fast. I hired out my shop build. It's a 36x48 pole building. 3 guys threw that whole thing up from start to finish in a couple days and the only reason they had to stop was for county inspections and garage doors. This little build was a fun one to do. I took my time and worked on it just a couple hours at a time on days off. It took a few months but I wasn't in a hurry.

@@MikeKincaid79 I was an ironworker for 17 years, carpenter/millwright for 15. I can honestly say I enjoyed building pole barns more than anything else I've ever done. I've put up some beautiful buildings. Absolutely loved it! A good crew that didn't have to be watched, means a lot. We had good men that all enjoyed what we do.

Love it. The roosts should actually be rounded polls so their feet can curl around it and sit better. Less stress to feet. They will use anything to roost but for long term health of feet, a rounded poll is less fatiguing for them. Otherwise, outstanding.

Hey great video ! I’ve been looking for this type construction and size of bldg for quite some time I really like the non verbal as for as instructions go you covered all that in the presentation. Great build! I chuckled when you said someone is coming out to install the gutters, you built a legit shelter, but subing out the gutters? Maybe do a rain barrel and then you can use the water for the garden...

I hear ya, sounds kind of funny when I think about it. Truth is, It's faster and just as cheap to have a professional gutter company come out and do the job with the right color metal, rather than ordering and doing it myself. They build them on site and I don't have to mess with it.

I've already done something like this myself, however, I tend to insulate my pole barn floors with mineral wool (eg. Rockwool, Thermafiber, ...) and adding another lay of pressure treated plywood to the far bottom. Reason for the floor insulation, these pole barns are elevated off-the-ground conducting/insulating zero ground warmth/heat within non-tropical areas, or subjected to winds/climate of the far northern/southern latitudes during Winter. If the pole barn is ever used for something above freezing, such as a water storage tank or other warm/non-freezing area/storage, will be a pain in the butt to ever insulate the floor within the future. Mineral wool, aside from mineral wool's insulation and pest reducing assets, also reduces noise. We all want our clucking chickens to sleep well right? (However, guess one could also lay down some foam board in between another layer of pressure treated plywood.) For the walls, I'd likely partition one room and insulate only those walls using cheaper fiberglass, as walls are extremely easier to maintain versus the flooring.

It's just pure natural sulfur, that's it. You could use it as a drench but you'll want to stir it up just before using cause the sulfur settles after a couple hours.

Thank you Mike, you have a great holiday season too! I am glad the food is gone, even though I didn't make more food than other times it seemed that.... I guess we started to eat less and with sweets and stuff was way to much. Cheesecake pecan pie and pumpkin pecan pie was delicious but it really tipped us over the edge. A hobby shed would be awesome! Shelley would love it. Hugs you you and the girls!

So... I'd planned basically exactly this build, having built a few bits and bobs over the years. I've spent the last 3 months listening to people who've either not built much or who've built loads, but only ever as contractors or site managers building to other's plans. Thank you for this; I'm going back to my original plans.

You can do it and you don't even need plans. I'm not a builder and have no experience in the building industry. Just grew up building tree forts and other projects. Also, grew up around a Dad that build lots of things as well. All it takes is a some thought and a willingness to carry it out. I wish I had plans for this and have been asked a lot but all I did was copy another shed on my property that is similar. I'd just take a few measurements and go replicate what I saw, then go look at how another part was and build it, and on and on. Good luck with your project and have fun building it. Nothing quite like the satisfaction you get from a job well done.

build a miniature test one that is moveable as a test. Can always find a use for it. Too many people wait till they get to that point. Develop skills and plan on small scale so when ready is easy.

Great compilation video, Mike. Do you plan to capture the water from the gutter system you install? The automatic coop doors are convenient. I think you would like them.

We've never had automatic doors but they sure will be nice once we get them installed. I hadn't thought about capturing the rain water but that's a great idea for the orchard.

@@MikeKincaid79 I capture the rainwater off my barn for the chickens, ducks, turkeys and rabbits and it’s the best thing I ever did Mike. I also put in a 3600 gallon tank on my front barn and ran the gutter into it for irrigation for my greenhouse and one of my produce fields and then I’ve got 25 330 gallon totes that are hooked to various gutters or use for water transfer and then use for irrigation for the produce fields. Best thing I’ve ever done!! Hook the water totes up to an automatic watered and never have to give your birds water again!! Take care Mike

This is a very good video. Do you have blueprints for this chicken coop that you’d be willing to share? It’s too bad that much wood costs a fortune today compared to just a year ago. But the cost of eggs is also skyrocketed so it’s worth it to build a coop and get some chickens for eggs and garden bug control.

Wow I love this! So many uses! imagine being this creative wow. If ever a guy would say to me, do you want a diamond necklace for your b'day? i'd say no, i'd love a shed please! Home-made is so special but a lot of work though. And I bet it smells great with all that wood. So many uses! bird watching shed, she-shed, storing dahlias and tubers shed, chicken shed, shed shed. lol I love it! :)

That thing is massive and awesome... Great job me for summer i would add two tiny fans at a low to medium speed and winter add the lighted heater red bulbs maybe one on each side with the two fans at a low speed where the air recirculates just like in chicken grow barns. Add make sure you put them on timers so its more automated.... Thats just me. Like i was once told by a chicken farmer "a happy chicken is a healthy poppin chicken" Meaning constant eggs producing... Oh and that side door directly to outside perfect than you have chicken manure the best fert but use very lightly as it can burn your trees or other...

Thanks! It was a lot of fun and very rewarding in the end. We've been using it now for 3 years and it's functioning great. My wife loves the ease of use, like collecting eggs and cleaning the coop out. Plus the storage area is perfect for keeping feed and bedding right by the chickens.

You did a great cut. The technics of your build is educational. The roof for example. Nice approach. I really enjoyed to watch it. You should try to seal the bottom and use bacterias with lots of shavings and / or small (grinded) straw. This way all the poop will be eaten by bacteria. You won't clean that much and it eliminates the smell. Thanks for good video.

That coop is amazing nice job. As for the nesting box lids I wound use magnets to hold up the lids . There is no fuss with hooks .

Your awesome buddy! Make sure you get that latch for your wife so she doesn't have to hold the door up when getting her eggs! Wow! Better yet could you just make a system so they roll into the kitchen and fall into the frying pan! Or maybe you can do it when you come home from work? Great job! Other than that latch it was perfect!
