Your work is fantastic. :-) Engineer here, getting into hydro. I live in middle desert. My guess is very well cooled NFT for fruiting and greens production, as our temps get up to 38 in middle summer during the day. Greens, tomatoes, potatoes, onions are my intention to begin, since that will expose me to a few methods. I'm going through your content, and you are confirming most of what I suspected, and enlightening me on many things! Thanks for what you do.

You Sir, have a talent for explaining things well and without losing my attention, also your designs are constantly impressive and creative. here is an idea to try i just figured out today. One vinyl gutter is about $6, cut it in half, have one section, cut it 2" up each side from the bottom, so it removes the folds. put the 2" reduced gutter half into the other gutter upsidedown, and drill the 2" holes in what was the bottom of the 2" reduced gutter. Also one of the wings that gets cut off from the gutter is a good triangle to put inside as a sort of angles seedling rootball support, to keep it not sitting entirely directly on the water. This makes for a $6 5ft channel that is easy to clean, or $12 for a 10ft. I'm sure you have access to a lot more plastic channel designs because you live next to China, but here in the USA, most NFT channels are $30+ shipping for 10ft length.

I'd probably use a net pot instead of just a holder of sorts. But that might be area related. I just think enough wind could *maybe* make the peat net pot thingy drop out of your print part and cause extra work to place it back again. Not a big deal, just a precaution really. Using the bandage is very smart! Thinking about a system like that for next season. I only have a very small balcony (even smaller than the one of your friend you made the first small version for) and it would increase the size of my "garden" drastically! Sadly I'm over in Europe and what you call "winter" is the weather in most of my growing season lol

Finally! I've been waiting for you to go vertical. Passive aeroponics seems to be the future and vertical farming should give the density that makes it worth all the investment. If you are not going to get much density, might as well grow outside in dirt. Great first experiment dude. I've seen some A-frame NFTs that allowed 4 times the density of growing horizontal, but vertical towers don't need water running all the time.

I can't think of a big difference.... if the crops are right. Strawberries do very well vertically, leafy greens do well... but large plants probably will be more difficult to handle.
@_morgoth_
@_morgoth_ 2 жыл бұрын
I'd probably use horizontal rain gutters and you can stack multiples vertically with a slight offset. That way, you only need to manage one reservoir and pump that can handle all of the rails/rain gutters. If you use the system in this video, you'd need build multiple of these and have a way to capture the water at the bottom of all the rails and return them to the reservoir (or unless you actually wanted each unit to have its own res and pump system).

Wow, this is wonderful! I'm in Europe, so any prices would be different, but it would be great in videos like these if you could put the prices for each items, with a picture appearing on screen, for each components. You could then have an Amazon affiliate account, so that you gain a bit when people buy things from the link you provide. I don't know if other companies do this, but if you prefer to source things from other companies than Amazon, I understand. I love Permaculture, but it seem it's at odds with hydroponics: integration with the rest of nature VS isolation from it. I think we need both, especially in a world more and more prone to floods, droughts, and other consequences from the Climate Emergency. But could you get plant nutrients organically? I'm guessing that if you were raising some plants that you then shred and macerate in water, it could be a substitute? Or maybe Aquaponics (with fishes), to fertilize, but I'm guessing there's still a need for outside fertilizer or PH balance. I've not looked into it yet, but I assume someone must have. Anyway, not that it's important now, but since you're doing so much to be resilient, I wonder if sourcing your fertiliser yourself would be advantageous.
