I've made two little pallets out of altoid pans, water bottle tops, and magnets. So cute and useful...just the basic yellows, reds and blues, green, purple, Paynes gray. Six colors per pallet. Too much fun!

It’s quite timely I came across this tutorial as I got sick of having all my half pans in different tins to decided to make one big tin of all of them together, I used an emptied coloured pencil tin and it’s perfect 👍 I swatched all the colours and put them in colour order and put all the metallic shimmer ones separately on the bottom line, looks fantastic and inviting

Thank you Kristy! Love your approach. Sometimes I feel more like a collector than an artist, because I love videos like yours ! I almost through out a large pallet that I was keeping my tubes of paint in because it’s heavy. I will keep it and make use of your idea. The next time I buy any paint sets , I will make sure they are all single pigment. It’s because I like to know what’s in the mix, as we say! Thanks again.

Haven't made my own watercolour palette yet but this reminds me of when I bought the 36 set of Winsor & Newton Cotman colours. Each half pan was individually wrapped like a boiled sweet and I had to prise each one out of the palette, cut the cellophane (because you couldn't just pull it off, oh nooo), unwrap it and then press it back into the palette between the specially designed runners. I truly felt that I was approaching the speed of light, because time was definitely slowing down. But I would love to try designing my own palette one day.

I loved seeing you create one of your palettes! I knew you used magnets but did t know if you put them on the inside of the pan or glued them to the bottom outside. Now I know! Question about your magnets though: with them, being on the inside of the pan, how strong is their magnetic strength? Do they hold without any sort of wiggle and budge to your metal pan? Or do they hold but when you’re painting, there is still some wiggle to it when your brush is in there? I ordered some magnets, and before filling my pans, tested out the magnetic strength. Mine are strong enough to hold the pan to the pallet, but I can easily slide and move the pan…
@KristyRice
@KristyRice 7 ай бұрын
There’s def still some wiggle but when the palette is pretty pull will pans and/or you’ve painted with it for a while the paint crud helps keep things tight too lol!!

Yes to the tunnel vision with tedious tasks and stopping to wash hands!! I can totally identify! When I filled pans, by the end of it my back was killing me from hunching over, and my hands looked like I got in a fight with a rainbow and lost. Separate note: I absolutely love your buried magnet idea. I used circular adhesive magnets on the bottom of full pans and they sort of stick out over the edges, so the pans can’t touch one another and don’t fit well in a box/tin…so I stuck them on a metal baking pan. Fine for home/indoor use, but I’m going to redo a set using your technique instead because… definitely can’t just haul a baking tin around with me! I mean, I could but… yeah. Not gonna. And finally…I enjoy your personality and no-holding-back / freeing approach to creating art. If you were a punctuation mark, you would be an exclamation point: your enthusiasm is contagious. Thank you for sharing through your channel!

This may be a ridiculous question, but... I don't understand why you would dry tube paint. My understanding is the colors are more vibrant right out of the tube. Sorry, I'm a brand new beginner... Your videos are super helpful thank you!
@KristyRice
@KristyRice Жыл бұрын
There are two brands I know of who specifically recommend using the paint from the tube. But the vast majority do not. The paints definitely are not more vibrant from the tube. Watercolor is water soluable so once cured will rewet easily for the most part. I actually never recommend using straight from the tube, especially as a beginner because it is too easy to grab too much paint, way more than needed .

My friend and I are taking a watercolor class that is supposedly for beginners, but we have been very frustrated because we took an immediate dive into painting complicated pictures. You have been very refreshing and informative to the point that we both are considering quitting the class and continuing with your videos instead. Depends on which brand your using to build the palette and sometimes which colors are included. I find most all paints cure to the point you could safely travel with them or toss them in a tote on their side within 2 weeks

Hello, Kristy. I had no idea vintage palettes was a thing. It never crossed my mind to search for vintage options. Thanks for that tip. Look out, Esty - Momma's about to go shopping! 😆😆😆 Now for *ahem* serious questions. When you paint, do you paint from multiple palettes? Are all your palettes organized by brand? Or do you have a palette with pigments from different brands? Finally - when it comes to storing the tubes of paint... Do you store tubes by brand or by pigment? That last question is a conundrum for me. Currently I store my paint tubes by brand and that's okay but I can see the value of storing by "color" - which I think would be various hues grouped under a name like, Blues, Reds, Yellows, etc. The challenge with that method is that I think I'd need more containers to sort tubes by colors than by brands. Any insight on this is greatly appreciated. 😼

@@KristyRice okay... You store tubes by brand. So what do you do if you're trying to find just the right shade of turquoise? Do you pull out every palette that has a turquoise shade and swatch till you decide which color you like best? Or do you just know that when it comes to turquoise, you're always going to select Brand X? If it's the latter, what do you do with all your other turquoise options from brands Y, Z and AA? Do you keep them? Sorry to hound you on this topic. I'm trying to master organization in a limited space and I want my set up to be as efficient as possible. 😼

I just have got my halfpans labeled on the side. Winsor and Newton Professional 48 tubes set from Amazon!? I was not too happy about the labeling because I HAD TO add their numbers. Those tubes are so freaking small as are the halfpans!? Not being able to have the whole name on the side is going to make me swatch mine on my pricy paper (Arches). I am a tad anal minded. Luckily, my pallet needs no magnets that came with mine - but not using them. I do not plan atm to mix my brands as I add more types of watercolor brands. Tomorrow I will fill them with paint - WOOOOT!! KRISTY!!?? Please make a video of Winsor and Newton Professional what is on those tubes as far as info. It is stressing me out somewhat...lols?

do you always need magnets? i ordered a holbein pallet and it looks like its ?plastic and you just snap the pans into the pallet? am i right about this? i'm just going to go with the 8 or 9 colors you recommended in your book

No def not. Those tray palettes that let the pans snap in def don’t need magnets. What I describe here is only if you’re trying to retrofit into an old tin :)

Hello! I’ve been wanting to make my own pallets and have always loved vintage things. Whenever I search for vintage tins they still have paint in them. Do you come across this a lot and what do you do in this situation?
@KristyRice
@KristyRice 2 жыл бұрын
Always :) Every vintage watercolor palette I’ve come across has old paints inside. They are typically in a separate custom for metal tray inset that can be carefully popped out with a few heaves of a flathead screwdriver :)

@kristy I know you recommended Gencraft half pan sets. Did you find the tubes as easy to work with?
@KristyRice

Honestly not at all. The tubes are a very very different formulation, I would not recommend. Pans are lovely!

Is the premium TUBE gencrafts watercolor paint exactly the same as the the PAN gencrafts watercolor? Just curious because the pan pallet is 48 colors for $30 and the tubes are 50 for $18. Wondering if I could refill my pans with the tubes and count on it being/performing the same? If so why do you think the cost difference?
@KristyRice

The tubes are absolutely not the same and I do not recommend them :( But I love the pans.

in some way yes but I'm not a traditional swatches! I'll usually just paint something with all the new colors to get acquainted with the new palette.

Have you painted with this brand yet? What do you think of the quality?
@KristyRice

I actually have this brand in a premade set of half pans abd much prefer those over the quality of these tubs paints. I reviewed the brand’s pre-made set on a Facebook live and it was my fave of all Amazon watercolor brands. The tubes are definitely a very different formulation.

What did you think of this brand of watercolors? I was thinking of ordering a brand called Arteza's. Have you heard of the? Would you ever use one of those cute tins you find at the dollar tree? Btw I love your enthusiasm in your videos! Your always warm and welcoming. I appreciate that so much. That's for the answers.

Arteza’ s tube watercolour tubes do not re-wet well after drying down Emily Artful did a review on them a while back and that was one major point she made, honestly if you want to upgrade from Cotman I dont think Arteza is the way to go white nights are an affordable professional grade paint that come in tubes and whole pans too if you are in the USA i think Jacksons art are good for shipping over there :-)

@@lori-lynncampbell9757 Windsor Newton artist grade (not Colman) are good quality. Sennelier are good too. And Schmincke Horadam are German, very good artist grade, but very expensive. Sennelier are a little more than W&N but you can find good sales. I have gotten cheaper sets like Mozart (it has metallic and neon ones in the set) and Rubens glitter just for fun, and they work very well. The difference is how much pigment compared to binders- good paint has a higher pigment ratio. And price isn’t always a good indicator. Arteza gets mixed reviews and is really student grade. The same color from various companies will be slightly different, such as cerulean blue is less greenish in W&N than other companies. And it happens in colors made with only one pigment (pigments have numbers like PB29), too, which doesn’t make sense. But it’s a good reason to make a palette using paints from various companies, putting just your favorites in it. Hope this makes sense and helps.
