Today's video is all about building the perfect watercolor palette and in this video I take you with me as I set up my own workhorse palette. This is my "perfect" palette setup with all of my favorite colors from all of my favorite brands. I take you through the warm colors, the cool colors and exactly how and why I position the colors where I do. Hi! My name is Margot and I am a professional artist and graphic designer. My parents like to joke that I was born with a paintbrush in hand. I started my career after graduating from the renown Parsons School of Design in New York City and spent over 15 years creating and designing for many of the world's top Fortune 500 brands and companies. My painting journey started as a side project and a creative outlet for me to step away from the computer, go back to my "roots" in fine art and to hone my skills as an illustrator and painter. Thanks for the recommendation for WN Rose Dore from your favorites video that you reference! My daughter recently gave me a mother's day "bouquet" of half pans (after she did some sneaky spying on my paint wishlist notes - lol) that included this color and I am loving it!

I own that same pallet. I like separate mixing areas so used hot glue to add in some that line up to the existing areas. I did split up warm and cool colors side by side. Thanks for the lesson.

I use a similar hack in my palette but with clear bathroom caulk. One of the artists I follow suggested it and it works great!

The metal palette looks really nice! Thanks for finding it! I had not seen it before. I keep my watercolours in whole pans with magnets so I can select and compile specific colours for each painting. However, I do have a specific set of paints I always use and this palette looks like the perfect home for them! 🤗😍

You gave great reasons for why you like each color, what they remind you of, and what instance you would use them. Ive seen this style palette before and like it well enough, but I think it would take up too much of my space. Maybe I need a bigger desk? 😂 I would really love to see all these colors swatched out because quite a few of these are very different from typical palette basics. Ive only used small amounts of Senneliers paints. I found some to be more subtle or less pigmented than other brands. It would be great to hear your opinion of them. Sorry Ive thrown quite a bit of ideas at you. 😁 Thank you for this great palette set up video. 😊😍

Nice video. I recently bought this same palette but with only 30 wells, and will be filling it with colors soon. Interesting idea in your video to spread out the colors with a brush after squeezing them into their pan slots. Some artists suggest putting a dab of color at the top (higher part) of each slot and then when painting add water and bring the color down into the slanted lower part of the slot. I may try that with my new palette. Cheers! :)

Thanks for watching! I find that spreading the paints out on the first application and getting a thinner broader spread at the beginning makes them juicier and easier to pick up the next time around. Don't know if there's scientific evidence to back that or not lol but it sure feels like it to me when I'm working. Good luck with your new palette!

Margot, I've been watching several palettes setups. Your explanations are very thorough. Question about the palette design. When the palette is folded, one side with paint wells folds over the other half. When you've been painting, as in outdoors, then the wet wells on one side will spill over onto the other half when this is folded. If the paint in the upper half is dry, well of course this is not likely to happen...although some paint colors rarely get hard and will flow even if a bit moist. This design looks OK but only for the studio. Comments? Thanks for considering.

Hi Mike, Thank you so much for your message and for watching! Your observations are correct. This is the palette that I use in the studio and I don't take this on the road with me. If I'm doing en plein air work or traveling, I usually resort to half-pan style palettes which are the gold standard for travel based palettes in my opinion. No matter how great of a surface a palette is, it's pretty typical for tube paint to crack or come off in transit which drives me crazy lol. I'll be doing some reviews of Sennelier and Daniel Smith half pan palettes in the coming months but those are what I usually reach for when I'm on the go. I really enjoy your colour selection 🤩 the video was wonderful 💛✨ maybe try to use the gummed brushes that are used for model making and clay things for spreading the paint? I couldn't help but worry over how much paint that watercolour brush wasted while spreading the colours, maybe that would be a better solution for your method ☺️🥰

I've been painting with watercolors all my life, it's definitely my favorite medium, and the one I get the best results with. However, only recently I've started to get more serious about it, and wanting to sell my work. The "OCD tendencies" you talked of having are incredibly helpful to observe for someone like me! I am the exact opposite of organized. Maybe it's the ADHD but I am impatient, messy, impulsive, don't really plan... My working style is just pure chaos, and whatever I've learned along the way is just memorization after observing what creates nice results as I pretty randomly mix paints to see what happens. It's super interesting, inspiring and even kinda odd to see how the more organized artists, such as you, work 😄

I was looking for a larger palette, so thank you for this. You had several colors I have not tried yet! Have you tried Sennelier's Greenish Umber? It's one of my favorite greens. It compliments Sap Green and Olive Green very well.

I've watched this video twice; I always learn from seeing other artists' color choices. Many overlaps between your favorites and mine, including brand choices, that's reassuring! Hullo Margot, I have just seen a video of yours in my recommended section of my KZfaq channels, 2nd video, but first comment. I am enjoying watching this palette set-up you have plenty of ideas that are certainly worth exploring! I avoid Dan Smith and W&N as they are just not worth the money to buy them! Perhaps you are located in Europe? I know W&N are very affordable over there. I have been just astonished by DaVinci Paints of California and they have almost pushed every other brand from my studio palette and I have purchased several different Artists curated palettes that they sell. Denise Soden’s are truly breathtaking and I simply cannot say enough wonderful things about her palettes and paint choices! I hope to see more of your content. I loved this video. I’m just surprised that you don’t like Sennelier much. I love their rose Opéra, the jaune clair, vert anglais, vert de vessie and the pourpre quinachridone. I would love to know for each of these colors you prefer in other brands, just because I love to explore and you just made me discover the W&N deep red. I have been looking for this kind of red for a while and I’m never satisfied. On the other hand because I’m in California and sennelier is super expensive, I have been looking for another rose opéra with no luck. Please, let me know what you think and keep posting your videos! Thanks

I have started having problems with my asthma with my favorite acrylic brand so until I figure a new brand out, I am dabbling in water color. What do you find the difference between gauche and watercolor? Is it opacities and texture?

I'm sorry to hear about your asthma issues. I can imagine and having kids in my workspace I totally understand wanting to keep noxious fumes at bay. If we can all live a little longer, we can have more time to create our gorgeous art right? Hi, Margot! Thank you for this great video! I, too, love this metal/enamel palette-- but I constantly have the issue of the some of the paints drying out and falling out when you close the palette... so I just leave it open, and place paper over it to keep the dust out. Any tips- I notice you place the paint all over the well, and noticed you may be painting it up the sides... is that a tactic to keep them from drying and falling out? Otherwise, I'm considering reducing my colors (don't want to) and getting one that has wells only on one side. Any thoughts?

I live on Lake Huron in Ontario. Watercolour brands are limited and I have always used Winsor and Newton. I am curious about other brands and how they would work with W&N. There are many art supply stores in Toronto that I can visit that I’m sure would carry other brands. Any help or recommendations would be sincerely appreciated. Cheers! Mark

I usually use a toothpick so I can get paint in the corners. I am really pleased to see someone using Aussie Red Gold, which is a big favorite of mine. Good for painting koi.

I didnt know anything about how a metal pallette is better, I have a plastic one and I find it wont keep my watercolors in good condition, so perhaps I need a metal one!! ty for the info and I love your color choices!!

Hi Becky! Before you throw out your plastic palette, if you have any gesso on hand, you could try coating the whole interior of your palette in that and you'll see that the paints grip it a lot better. I have another video about it and it's a great way to revive a less than ideal palette :)

Hullo Margot, I am watching a second time and just wanted to say that I have better luck putting a bead of paint at the back or base of the well and draw some of the color towards the front of the well so it sticks very well. I avoid the fugitive colors but I love painting flowers so I have found DaVinci’s Quinacridrone Fuchsia a lovely bright pink Thioindigo violet is another well used color in my palette these paints are not fugitives and I have no reservations about the permanence of my paintings! Ok I will not bother you in the comments of this video again. Thanks again!

Great question! I make sure to spread out the M Graham extremely thinly on this one. The majority of my M Graham lives in the fridge. As for the rest, they all stay put but with that said, this is not a travel palette. It’s for studio use so it doesn’t get tossed around much.

This pallet seams to really bead up. And when closed, if travel is needed how does the top function to prevent dripping onto the bottom part? Does the amount of drying out effect your choice of Windsor & Newton to use this pallet.

Hi Suzanne! I don't find this palette to bead up all that much compared to a lot of other plastic and enamel ones. If that's a concern, there's a trick of applying glue from a glue stick all over your palette and wiping it off with a paper towel that eliminates any extra wax or grease that builds up during the manufacturing process. You can also use a magic eraser to get similar results and avoid all beading. I skipped this step here because it doesn't really bother me (although I find beading to be a huge pain in plastic palettes which I avoid like the plague lol). I also don't necessarily recommend these types of palettes for serious travel as I haven't yet found a palette to which watercolors adhere completely in transit. If a travel palette is what you're looking for, I would opt for a half pan palette from W&N or Daniel Smith to really eliminate the chance of your watercolor popping off. Hope that helps and let me know if you have any questions about anything else :) ps. My palette never affects my choice of paint. In terms of decision making, paints and colors always come first no matter what ;)

Is there a big difference between the Daniel Smith Potter's Pink and the Winsor & Newton? They have the same pigment. I have the DS and wonder if I should get the W&N. There are a couple other colors that I have in DS with the same pigment. Same question. Thank you so much!

Yes! In my opinion, the DS is more “brown” whereas the WN is pinker and more transparent. I personally like the WN better. Even though the pigments are the “same”, there can be a fair amount of variance in hue and properties based on the provenance of the pigment and the way it was formulated in the paint. Hope that helps!

I wonder why you use a wet paintbrush to butter the paint into place. I would think a palate knife would be better since it won't absorb so much paint and kind of waste it. You probably have a reason. I'm just curious.

That's a great question! Honestly, it's probably because I use so little paint. What I put on in this video literally lasts me months so I don't feel the need to squeeze a ton onto my palette and prefer to keep the bulk of my tube watercolor fresher. There's also the added benefit of being a tad more flexible if for some reason I change my mind about a color on my pan, I wouldn't be wasting a lot if I wanted to change the color on a whim 😉 Thanks for the question and for watching!!

FWIW - You can rub white toothpaste over a plastic palette to roughen up the surface and then your paint will stick.

I reccomend putting a little bit of honey in the paint. It makes more paint inside the palette and it prevents cracking in the palette

That’s interesting! I’ll try it but out of curiosity, has your honey ever grown moldy inside your palette? I’m sure it depends on the humidity levels in your climate.

@@Pointebrush Hi Margo! It is rare for mould to grow. It does happen, for sure, but it is very, very rare. Remember that your paints probably already have strong preservatives. Any mould won’t be from the honey, but from the water in the paint. Honey absorbs water from the atmosphere, thereby stopping the paint from completely drying. It is that water that will kickstart mould growth. You should worry more about insects; they looove honey. From experience, I know that ants hate cinnamon. OMG, I’ve never seen ants huddle in a corner before to keep away from cinnamon water (cinnamon boiled in water); and they were the big kind of ants… so much for size. Anyway, you could try placing a cinnamon stick inside your palette. Alternatively, add a drop or two of essential oil to a piece of cotton and keep it in the palette (caution: essential oils attack plastic so keep the drops in the middle of the cotton so that it does not touch the palette if you have a plastic one). Obviously, cinnamon essential oil is good, but search online for information on other oils that ward off insects. Having said that, people with allergies might want to keep away from spices and essential oils. As for adding honey to your paints, you really don’t need much honey, two tiny drop on the tip of a toothpick for a half pan is enough. The paint will still harden but it will activate quickly. If your paint dries rock-hard and does not reactivate then add more honey using the toothpick. You will need to experiment to find what works for you and your weather. Use as little honey as you need; otherwise, your paint will be sticky after it dries on the paper. Hope this helps!

The palette recommended is made of aluminum, NOT porcelain, according to the Amazon description..

Noooo I was kind of cringing at using the brush to spread the colors out lol. I wouldn’t used a toothpick or something. Or palette knife I love that palette. It’s huge 😳
