This is my gas bottle wood burner I built over a fortnight of cold evenings early this year 2012, hope you like it.

I've just made a stove to this pattern. I looked at many of the similar vids on YTube and thought that this one had the best ideas. I may put another air vent in the end opposite the door to feed air for combustion into that end of the fire. Air for secondary combustion will come from the door vent. Thanks for posting though, its a great little stove

Great one. So much better than mine. I failed bad on the chimney size. I used an trailer tongue and it was way to small. Thumbs up.

Seems to me being able to bypass the secondary burner would make for a less smokey start up with little or no smoke having to flow past the door end. The flat plate you welded on top should actually be inside and you could put a sliding gate directly under the chimney. Air could be introduced by a drilled steel tube at the mouth of the secondary burner and be plumbed to a outside air supply. Another air supply could be mounted low just inside the door for start up and throttling down the fire. I like that you wanted a secondary burn as that makes the stove far, far more efficient.

very impressed by your door hinge idea, I made a upright stove and used a pair of shed door hinges...... only lasted a few months before the heat burnt it off...Nice design and your smoke venting idea...good job mate.🙄

s mac, thank you, I made the hinges like that so the door would clear the flange around the door opening, the smoke venting idea came from our Morso wood burner.

The way I made my cuts (I joined two 9 kg bottles together) was to use some black roofing paper and measure the height of where I wanted to cut, Then cut the paper to that height with a straight edge, I then wrapped it around the bottles and drew my line. I was impressed with myself after that. LOL.

That's great! One of the best I've seen and I'm having a trawl for ideas. What thickness is the plate you used on the top and how did you do the folds so neat?
@R1FREESTYLE
@R1FREESTYLE 11 жыл бұрын
Plte thickness was 5mm, drew lines on the plate, then used a 1mm disc cutter to draw a line/score where I needed the fold.

One thing I would change with this is I would add an ash box. If you had another empty gas bottle cut the side out of it so it fits exactly inside the bottom of your stove and then then just weld some sides to it, maybe a small handle on the front. Put a cast iron grate over the ash box so the fire burns up top and the ash falls through to the box. if this makes any sense at all lol

Makes perfect sense! Always looking to improve on a design, thanks for the suggestions.

You might want to try using a powerplasma cutter if you are making more of these. I find the cut goes way faster and cleaner.

really great job!! i got one question about the door why did you do that ? thanks for you highlights. keep goin on!
@R1FREESTYLE
@R1FREESTYLE 9 жыл бұрын
franckycath The air comes in via the middle vent and takes a long route so it warms up. It then gets pased through at the bottom of the door to feed the fire and at the vents at the top to get a secondary burn on the smoke and fumes comming off the fire, it increases the efficiency :-)

With the cooking plate ,why did you not just put flat plate why use the concave , and create that air box thingymajig.
@R1FREESTYLE
@R1FREESTYLE 8 жыл бұрын
+Chris Dealny The idea is to make the smoke take as long a route as possible and draw as much heat out of it into the burner before it escapes into the atmosphere. Also it routes the escaping gases past the small holes in the door where heated air enters the fire, creating a secondary burn effect, cleaning up the exoting fumes and generating nore heat :-)

R1FREESTYLE I agree with you about it being something you do that you enjoy for relaxation. Also the guy who said it's an awful lot of effort for what it does obviously has never been in a position to have to find another option. I am building a cabin which will be off grid, now I've been looking at woodstove cookers and they're bloody expensive. If I could weld I would much rather make one like you've done because after the build I'm not going to be able to afford solar etc for around a year (cost of insulation, roofing etc etc) He's obviously got more money than sense. I think it's brilliant that you made this...basically it would mean that I could stay on site at the build instead of trekking a mile and back to my sister's every time I wanted coffee, something to eat, and heat because Scotland can be a lot colder than London where I am just now! Great job mate!

Anne Anderson Thank you Anne for you're very positive and comprehensive reply. we do this stuff out a love for what we are doing, re-using scrap materials and taking things back to basics. People only want to take the easy route, buy that throw away thing for instant gratification, then move on. Yet nothing ever gets thrown away, we use valuable resources making it, then it just hangs around on the planet, unwanted and choking up the enviroment. Make something useful that will last, that you need, make it well and use it every day, thats not too much effort, thats no effort at all....good luck with the cabin...sounds perfect!

R1FREESTYLE I'm going to be using as much recycled, reclaimed stuff as I can. I think I have just about everything from the composting toilet surround to the kitchen cabinets all planned with shipping pallets, I have found a couple of tent stoves that I can make with my Dremel and a Drill and a hand Riveting thing the only things I need are a decent sander and a circular saw (my sister has supplied me , well it's for us both but I think I will be the one using it, with a portable chainsaw mill for the trees that got blown down! ) there's also a full sized 'dozer JCB type thing that I want nothing to do with lol! I'm doing this to reduce my carbon footprint and get off grid. If it means we can put other people's throw away stuff to good use then I will be happier too.
