Speargun building comes in all different flavors and styles, such as this diy homemade speargun with a flair of fancy, an open track spear gun. This video details how to build a wooden speargun for shallow water spearfishing and this is how I made this first diy spearfishing gun utilizing a variety of woodworking techniques, a true homemade spear gun. This homemade speargun is by no means an expert project and through this video I document how to make a spear gun step by step. In this spear gun build, I utilized the Neptonics reef trigger mechanism in this video that incorporates diy speargun parts and ultimately shows a spearfishing gun with reel. This diy speargun is entirely crafted from local Indian rosewood. However, the principles are very basic in this simple homemade speargun. I show you how to make a speargun handle through power carving a basic, ergonomic, diy speargun handle.
The finishing products were supplied and sponsored by Mas Epoxies. Those included a three stage process of penetrating epoxy, 2:1 epoxy, and Bristol Finish Urethane top coat. Those three finishes allow any diy maker to safely finish a home made spear gun in their shop. The diy spear gun may appear to be intimidating, but this simple spear gun make is far from daunting with only a few specialized tools necessary. Most of principles on how to make a spear gun from wood, are basic wood working joinery techniques, such as draw bore mortise and tenon, that are elementary. At the end of the day I hope this video on how to make a wooden speargun inspires you build and move outside of your comfort zone and try a new project such as this easy speargun diy.

Great book for a beginner . kzfaq.infoUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ this book really starts from the beginning, as in it explains what basic tools are and how to use them. But when it gets to the art of creating joints and how and when to use them this book really starts to teach you something. At least that was my experience.

It’s just a different approach. Most of the speargun videos require a router table and specific end mill bits. I did this primarily with a table saw and a drill press. A majority of the other tools are optional.

Nice build for your first but all those band holes aren't needed even for band band placement. There's a bunch of different band sizes out there and and u can cut to length instead of band placement. Epoxy for track or metal maybe? Straight wood track would wear out over time. Would love to see another build one day👍🏼

Looks good! Can ask why you cut the solid piece into strips and then laminated them together?
@CowDogCraftWorks
@CowDogCraftWorks 3 жыл бұрын
So the grain in that wood is pretty straight but even still I was scared that it could curve or warp over time which would ultimately affect the track and therefore performance. So by cutting into strips and doing a lamination I can arrange the strips in such a way that the opposing forces are constantly keeping it flat and therefore straight.

Hello, great video...thx One question: what is the reasoning behind using the penetrating epoxy first and then a standard 2:1 epoxy? Is the first not enough? is the penetrating epoxy also a mix with hardener? Did you sand between penetrating epoxy...standard epoxy and then the finish? Thx in advance and sorry for the 20 questions. Jason
@CowDogCraftWorks
@CowDogCraftWorks 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah so the penetrating epoxy is a ton thinner. It’ll travel the pores and grain direction to preserve it from the inside out and the 2:1 operates as a more substantial top coat. It is a two part mix with hardener. I did a very light scuff sand. Just some 220 to knock down any little bumpies.

I am working on a speargun build and I have been hearing that I should also use 2 part epoxy for the glue lam. Why did you use regular wood glue (does it expand?) and should I use it or should I try 2 part epoxy?
@CowDogCraftWorks
@CowDogCraftWorks 3 жыл бұрын
Two part epoxy, titebond 3, or poly glue should all be good. I used titebond 2 because I used penetrating epoxy, 2:1 epoxy, and marine varnish over the top of it. Wasn’t really too concerned with the integrity of the glue being affected by water contact. If you’re going to leave the wood raw, like most folks do with teak go with what I suggested at the start of the comment.

The line wrap was installed by the end user. The trigger guard area was just eye balled.

Honestly I can’t remember. If I recall I based everything off the spear shaft. So I think it’s like 10”-12” shorter than the spear.
