When we think about sandbags, we think flood prevention. But did you know that you can use them to build your house? Cal-Earth is a nonprofit that teaches students how to build structures called SuperAdobe, houses that work in harmony with nature.
VOA Connect brings together stories of people across the United States and around the world, from a virtual reality brain surgeon ushering in a new age of medicine to a Vietnam War vet connecting to the daughter he never knew. It's a place to meet street artists and high tech innovators, and everyone in between.

I dont know about how they did it precisely in the old days, but using earth materials found in California desert (clay sand/dirt) was how it was done. I think those homes survived until they were torn down. I would like to live in a Adobe style house but wanting to live in the mountains, would be a bit difficult. But I love these homes

I wonder how many Californians would still have a house if they had built in clay and soil rather than timber. Strangely modern materials and the building code, insurance companies and council regulations encourage people to build with flammable materials..lightweight materials - whilst discouraging appropriate and inexpensive building methods. It is in effect the complete bastardisation of architecture by construction material companies and 'the state' to disempower people and put them into debt and dwelling in environmentally inappropriate structures.

Greetings from São Paulo, Brazil. I'm organic and love anything that is building naturally or with earthen resources. I also believe in Recicle, Reduce, Reuse and Reinvent our garbage. What about the long bags? That means that I have to buy them from a company? I don't see that as eco-friendly. If we would have to make them, that's a lot of heavy duty work. I like the design of the houses. But where do the long bag plastic come from? Are they from recycling materials? I have doubts about the long plastic bags. I don't see how they could be eco-friendly? Please, give me more information about them. Hugs.

So it took that guy 4 years to build his house? I've seriously been curious about this, and I'd love to hear some stories of people who built there home like this. 4 years to build that is rather disappointing and contrary to the earlier message of the video.

You bet. A message designed to generate uninformed fervor over a 'not as easy as it sounds' concept based on figures that in the context of reality, I believe, were related to building the little garden shack size units. The owner of the big one that took 4 yrs, also made an incomplete blanket statement, (Ah hates those with a passion !!), regarding how many people live in Adobe houses, not adding that all of those people live in the deserts, that I mention further in my information comment above !! :)) Also without mentioning that none of those people worry about a sealed environment (you know doors, windows, and air conditioning, that are so precious, and 'necessary' to people who don't live in a desert, as is. A little bit of information is useless, and misleading. Some would say , even dangerous, when compared to ALL the information. Here's a non-salesman "...with the facts Jack !" :))) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eaeHbMxm3eDdiHU.html A young couple that start from scratch on their totally off-grid home, cistern and root-cellar. The two other necessary buildings you will need. :)

Ahead of your time. Only 2 years later unpredictable rainfall is literally 'putting a damper' on the prospect of viability. Guess it wasn't raining where you were back then. Well that has changed, drastically in some places, like the country I'm in. And it's mostly raining everywhere else now! And a more recent build even showed what happened when the build was totaled by a little bit of rain when they forgot to cover the partial build overnight. So it took a lot longer than a day to fix the sabotage. So, not too many areas are available now without the amount of rain the rest of the world gets. Unless built indoors, which is what I would do as inexpensively as possible. and then moved outside, which would be a task for the budget and a strain on the structure/materials. And like most other buildings, if the material doesn't dry out completely before being sealed up there will likely be black mold type problems. Now maybe when Earth gets past the evolving cycle of Insane weather and Superstorms, and until the far enough future arrives when the world-wide droughts begin. There are only a few of the worlds deserts where a perfect, or even successful outdoor build can happen, But, not many people can live there and the deserts they live don't get much rain. Combined with the fact that those people don't seal up their homes. So they are completely air dry all the time, so no mold, etc. . Hope this is all considered in your FREE (maybe) seminars. Just Saying. :)

Hell of BS stories. I got some sandbags and they didn't even last six months in the sun before they were had to be burned for trash. The sandbags even Decay inside of a building with no light shining on them. If you get that Dome covered with cement damn fast it might work.

I was wondering how long those bags would last. If they all perished at around the same time, and collapsed, maybe you could be buried alive?
