I did it! I built one, on the ground. I named it Lumpy. It looks great I can't wait to use it, I did not have cotton fabric to use, so instead I used some large zucchini leaves for the top and it worked just fine. Also, once the leaves burned away, they left a cool imprint on the inner part of the oven.

not too hard, actually. at arm's length, the average person's hand width is approx an hour of movement up from the horizon. (each finger width is /about/ 15 minutes) once you get used to measuring it that way, you'll learn to guesstimate it pretty quickly with just a glance. google 'old ways of telling time' and you'll see some interesting methods.

This is really terribly fascinating. It prompts one to think about how things we take for granted-like a hot oven at the ready..would take so much effort. Also, it’s fascinating that you can deconstruct the oven and pry the mud off and leave barely a trace. Just wonderful!

Platzhallter Yes, the bread is wonderful in Deutschland. Though I was told that the Germans learned to make bread from the French.
@maxdecphoenix
@maxdecphoenix 6 жыл бұрын
Platzhallter bread is proto civilizational. When early man stumbled into the fertile crescent and found fields of the major grains we know today stretching from Cairo to the black sea, use and preservation of those seeds was what allowed settlement and ultimately civilization. Pulverized seeds, mixed with water and cooked on a rock in a camp fire. It's ubiquitous in humanity. Refined over 15,000 thousand years.

Takes time, patience and trial and error. And there's is nothing to be ashamed of using a bread mix in a bread machine. My sister makes her own bread and that's how she learnt, getting used to the process in the bread machine, experimenting with recipoes and finding ones that worked for her.. She still prefers using it to knead & rise the dough as she has joint problems so kneading gets painful.

a wet towel on the door makes a good seal and adds moisture for the early part of the bake. It took me half a summer to make mine and moved several years later. The new owners weren't into it and the oven went back into the field it (mostly) came out of.

Great to see their interest in history. Judging from their dark hair and complexions, some of the children were Native Americans.

Your video entitled, "How to build an Earthen Oven and Use it the Same Day!" showed up in my feed so I gave it a go as it was inline with what I normally watch. I found your video to be well presented and free of the stammering, wild tangents and repetitive drivel that many other folks post. You presented great material in a manner consistent with everyday conversation and I appreciate both you and your instruction. So much, in fact, that I Liked and Subscribed immediately following your presentation. I'll be watching your other videos, and look forward to new material in the future. Great job!

An earthen oven is one of those things I've always meant to make but have never gotten around to. I've cooked meat (usually freshly caught fish) wrapped in clay and buried in embers while camping but I'd love an earthen oven in my yard to bake in, because, well... I think anyone who's a fan of this channel would know why and understand! I think I'll make this my Spring or Summer (depending on when the weather is amenable) project for this year. I'm looking forward to squelching the mix to make it, to be honest - I know my grandson and I would both love that part!
