Due to the fact that the my Car Rooftop Cargo Carriers I had, broke after a few seasons, I decided to make one made integral of fiberglass, with the guarantee that it will last a lifetime. Fiberglass is a lightweight material but with very high mechanical properties, being used mainly in the aeronautical industry. Which led me to choose this material. During the video you can see all the steps I followed.Enjoy the video and if you have any questions feel free to ask in the comments section below.

@Oscar TheSoldier, first of all, thank you very much for your comment and support. Those like you motivate me and give me the confidence to continue this work. I will definitely make a video in which I will present the assembly of the accessories but at the moment I have a busier period and for a month and a half I will post less often unfortunately. I will return in force after this period !!! Don't forget to subscribe!!!

I feel like I missed a couple important steps. Where did the initial mold come from? And where did the much bigger blue part of the shell come from?

@Mario Bonifacio. First of all, thank you very much for your comment! Secondly, I want to apologize for the fact that my answer comes so late. And last but not least, to answer your question, the mold was copy after a rooftop cargo carrier that I bought from a store that sells such transport systems. But as I wrote in the description and explained in other comments, it broke after one season. That's why I chose to make one of fiberglass that will last a lifetime. The larger shell was made the same way, but I couldn't document the process by filming.I worked in a garage and the owner did not allow me to film unfortunately. In the future I want to make a video about how to make a mold and what aspects must be taken into account when making it.Unfortunately, I don't have a workshop to work in, but I will try to solve this problem by winter. If you find my videos helpful, don't forget to subscribe to the channel. Your support helps me and motivates me to continue!

The basic materials are fiberglass and resin. Fiberglass is produced by the company Owens Corning and has a density of 600 grams per square meter as a structural layer and 10 grams per square meter for first layer added on gelcoat. The resin is polyester, pre-accelerated manufactured by Polynt but I buy it through a local distributor called Polidis. This box weighs about 10 kg. Considering the percentage of 40-60% obtained by manual rolling, it results in 3.5 kg of fiberglass, 5.5 kg of resin and approximately 1 kg of gelcoat. Polyvinyl alcohol and demoulding wax are produced by the company Rexco-USA. Both the brands and the products used are in a top range, being among the most expensive in the composite materials market industry. My advice is to look for cheaper products from local suppliers that have fairly good or even similar properties. I hope I answered your questions and if you have more do not hesitate to contact me. Thanks again for your support.

@adventures_withdan, First of all thank you very much for comment! In the industry in which I operate there are no design limits. Fiberglass can be shaped according to the wishes and needs of each individual person. Not to mention that it will last a lifetime. In the future I want to make a transport box wide enough so that I can mount a solar panel on it but still have a futuristic design. I have a project in which I want to turn a microvan into a weekend microcamper for short distances. I will need a pop of roof, a solar panel and a roof cargo box, all in one small space. If you want to see other interesting projects, don't forget to subscribe to the channel. It helps me a lot to continue!!!

Hi! First of all, thank you so much for the video. The product has come out great. I have few questions, please help me out as I am trying my first fiberglass work. 1. How long should we wait (in minutes) for the gel coat to be dry before applying the laminate and resin? and also the wait time for the PVA to be dry. 2.What kind of resin did you use? is it Epoxy or Polyester?
@PAFixandCrafts
@PAFixandCrafts 3 жыл бұрын
@nihal revankar, Thank you extremely much for comment!!! Depending on the ambiental temperature and the percentage of catalyst (HARDENER) the gel time should be around 30 minutes. After this time you can no longer work with the gelcoat because it will qure. The waiting time between gelcoat application and lamination can be from two hours upwards but I prefer to leave it 24 hours from personal experience. This is due to the fact that although the gelcoat has hardened, it does not reach the hardness I want. Also from experience I can say that it happened that in some places it did not harden completely before laminating because I did not mix the catalyst very well. And in this case the gelcoat was accelerated by fiberglass and air bubbles formed because it eliminated gases (styrene). It is a technique in which the gelcoat can be applied and immediately fiberglass layers can be laminated without waiting for gelcoat to be hard. I can't say which method to choose or which is better but I can recommend the one that works very well in my case.This is a 24 hour waiting time.I basically leave it until the next day. PVA It must be applied in very thin layers and I wait about 30-45 minutes between layers. It depends a lot on the ambient temperature. I recommend two thin layers. As a tip, set the air system pressure to less than 4 bar. I recommend 3.5 bar (depending on the spray gun used). Do a test before on a piece of cardboard. Here is a video of mine in which I explain more about PVA kzfaq.info/get/bejne/msCHes5quJu0d4E.html . For the second question, it depends on the application. In this particular case I used polyester resin. The factors that influence the choice of resin are multiple (purpose, cost, strength, interior / exterior design, etc.). In the future I will make a video in which I will explain more about resins. I hope I answered your questions as much as possible and if you think I can help you in the future, do not hesitate to write to me.

@ Fiaz Iqbal. First of all, thank you very much for the comment. Unfortunately, I lost this movie in which I was mounting the hardware. It was filmed with a cell phone and it broke. I'm still trying to recover the data from it but so far I haven't been successful. This was also requested by a subscriber and I promised to post it but I do not have a workshop to work in at the moment. But since it has now warmed up outside and I can work outdoors I will try to do this on the next transport box built. Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. Your support is very important to me and motivates me to continue.

Good day I have two questions What's the name of the gelcot you use What's the name of the material you put on the mold before you gelcot?
@PAFixandCrafts
@PAFixandCrafts Жыл бұрын
Regarding the gelcoat, I don't know which brand I used exactly for this project, but I can list a few brands that I work with, such as: Polyester gelcoat NORPOL® GI produced by Reichhold ore Crystic® Gelcoat produced by SCOTT BADER. I always buy clear gelcoat and pigment separately. That way I don't risk staying with it in stock. The first substance used is demoulding wax produced By REXCO USA (6B7EDC). The second substance is Polyvinyl alcohol which is also a demolding relece agent produced By REXCO USA. If you found my answer helpful, don't forget to subscribe to the channel. @abs_jetdeglenk. First of all, thank you very much for the comment. For the production of this cargo box carrier I used CSM (chopped strand mat) with a density of 600 grams per square meter as a structural layer and CSM of 10 grams per square meter for the first layer between the gelcoat and the structural layer. It is not necessary to use it, but it brings better performance to the laminate. I say this because the cost of materials will increase. So it is not necessary but I recommend. I really like your car and if you look through my videos you will see that we have a common passion. If you found my answer helpful don't forget to subscribe to the channel! It motivates me a lot to continue.

@காவியா, First of all, thank you very much for the comment. Unfortunately I can't offer you a price for this product. I didn't make it to be sold. I made it to be used for personal purposes. As I said in the video description, the plastic one on the market deteriorated after two seasons. But this one made of fiberglass will last a lifetime. But I can say that the price of the materials to make this cargo box carrier did not exceed 100 euros. If you found my video interesting, don't forget to subscribe to the channel !!!
