Here's a small but low budget cargo carrier I made with one 4ft by 8ft sheet of 4mm fluted plastic, zip ties and two cargo straps. This 5 cubic foot rugged water tight box was simple to make using a measuring stick, pencil, hole punch, crease wheel and razor knife.

Security looks to be the real downside of something like this. Much easier to quickly gain access than with a nice lockable cargo carrier

OK Paul, now combine this idea with your homeless shelter and you'll have a roof top pop up camping shelter for a SUV... hmm, maybe the top can also be used as a boat! I truly admire you and your ingenuity.

I would personly tape the front of the box to the car, to keep the wind from catching under the box, lifting up the thing and posibly pulling it off the top. But definetly a cool Idea.

I didn't notice any lifting or shifting going on. It could be the wind hitting the windshield just passed over the crack.

Hi, physics enthusiast and general car guy here. This box is shaped well enough so the downward force exerted by the wind on the front slant is high enough to mitigate the amount of upward force provided by the little "scoop" on the underside of it, meaning if this were properly mounted on rails it would make little to no difference. However the boxy back side has no aerodynamic assistance whatsoever, and will increase your coefficient of drag due to the fact that there are no air effects to prevent that drag from being created, and may also damage the box itself depending on its structural integrity. Making a trapezoidal prism of sorts to put on the back instead to give it more of a teardrop shape would dramatically decrease this and keep the overall vehicular drag relatively normal, as well as prevent any possible future damage to the cargo carrier. Good luck on future builds, and have fun!

The top front portion is actually the same folds as Sparky, my electric boat. This challenge was similar to an origami challenge: to see what you make folding one sheet of coroplast (and a few cuts)

Paul, I love it. I'm worried that the slight movement of the box during travel will actually scrape the paint of your car's roof, perhaps a strip of foam insulation (like for windows and doors) under the box would prevent that.

This is off topic however I would like to know how the 3 to 1 ratio crack resistant cement and perlite worked for your rocket stoves? I'll be making one soon and would like to know if I should adjust the mix. This car carrier has me wondering if a coroplast camper shell is doable.
@paulwelkinsdiy
@paulwelkinsdiy 7 жыл бұрын
On the rocket stove question, you must be thinking of someone else. I did however try to make a foldable arced style Coroplast camper on my old truck but it was too hard to handle when setting up. I'm sure if I persisted it could have been done.

Paul, you can buy powerful "Neodymium Magnets" off of Amazon in different sizes. Without having any straps or oermanent mount solution, you can magnets on the top at strategic locations and match the same locations individually from inside the car roof to have a secure grip without running ropes or ties. When you're done transporting, pull the magnets off and store them. 👍
@manp1039

"match the same locations individually from inside the car roof"?? wouldn't that require removing the roof liner inside the car to place magnets close to the metal roof?

Been trying to envisioning something like that for my van have be shaped similar but larger

@paulwelkinsdiy
@paulwelkinsdiy 7 жыл бұрын
I did get some moisture coming in on the door seals as you mentioned. The manufacturers of the bag cartop carriers suggest to loosen up the straps some when it rains. I'm not sure this would work that well. I'd rather have the load secure on top and wipe up the moisture.
