I see lots of folks talking about under-sized hinges, I'm more concerned about using dry wall to take the load
@bobguy6542
@bobguy6542 2 жыл бұрын
The load is transferred to the floor and the elevated floor. The drywall is just holding the contraption upright when its folded up.

Those drywall anchors are not rated anywhere close to the dynamic load of someone climbing stairs, especially since the stairs are loosely hinged and will transfer all kinds of angular momentum. Those anchors will wiggle loose. The first failure will be the 3/4" screws on the hinges torquing out of the plywood end grain though.
@jtcmlt1
@jtcmlt1 2 жыл бұрын
@@bobguy6542 No, it doesn't transfer to to the floor or the elevated deck. The whole weight of the person transfer directly and only to the screws and the hinges.
@gavinhassett479

@@jtcmlt1 wouldn't it be a 50/50 transfer, 1/2 into the wall and the other 1/2 load into the outside stringer

Absolutely terrible design. Those drywall anchors cannot withstand anything close to the dynamic load of a human climbing stairs. Those screws will not hold those hinges.
@thomaschristiejr265
@thomaschristiejr265 2 жыл бұрын
The drywall will eventually fail as well. The small screws won’t last as long as drywall under this application. I believe the outside stringer could be mounted like a normal stair with the hinges on the inside corner. That would also guard the pistons holding it in the top position

I think half inch plywood is strong enough for household use. Weak point is the dry wall.

@TheWeekendAngler 2 жыл бұрын
@@ahmedeensaeed991 I think the plywood is fine, but from what I'm seeing, the plywood isn't supported by anything other than a cheap hinge. Probably wouldn't be too long before the hinge pin bends and you can't fold the stairs.
