In today's video I'm updating the old shutters that are falling off of my income property renovation. I built these contemporary window shutters with cedar fence pickets from the big box store and they were super affordable... less than $10 of lumber in each shutter The farmhouse style shutters that were up were trendy about 10 years ago and something a bit more contemporary should help the exterior of this house stand out!! This is a pretty simple project, I did everything with "limited tools" but it would be a breeze in a fully fit workshop! If you build some, I'd love to see, tag me @modernbuilds on instagram!

Not sure I understand the purpose of shutters that don’t shut. I assume it’s purely aesthetic? Is it common thing thing in America? Don’t really see it in Australia. Edit: FYI - I have no issues with it. If it’s a common practice, especially in the context of the local streetscape, then it’s a perfectly acceptable facade treatment. One of the things I love about house Reno KZfaq series is seeing construction methods in other countries.

The worst part is that it's dimensionally so off that it also looks goofy. What a waste of lumber. There are decorative shutters in other countries but they are designed to look like they could work. Here it's just boards nailed to the wall. No hinges, no latches ...

I'll never understand why y'all Americans do faux shutters that not only don't actually shut, but don't even look like they do. You have a tiny sliver of a shutter on each side for a big wide window that could never be covered by these, it feels so unatural. But I guess it's just the way it"s done over there haha. I do love how they turned out and you've been able to transform some cheap wood and make it look very neat, great job!

I think everyone here in Oklahoma just relies on central heating and air conditioning because of the humidity and temperature at night.... that and people usually use blackout drapes or window treatments on the inside of bedrooms if you want to block out the sunlight. I appreciate you asking though... In a more temperate climate hinged shutters totally makes sense!

Great work. Thanks so much especially for sticking to normal tools. I’ve thought about making these with the cedar fencing planks, but the thought of having to use a planer or something like it was holding me back. Now I know I can just sand them.

In my opinion, even fake shutters should be realistic meaning they should at least ‘cover’ the window when closed, even if never closed or they should not be added. I liked the style of the ones you built though.

Shudders are one of those architectural anachronisms from when windows needed protection from the elements. It's funny because if you want storm shutters, that actually work, they are impossible to find.

Available in Europe, aluminum ones and or wooden ones. Different types as well, those made to just make shade or those made to protect even from burglars. I have no idea what are these in the video supposed to do tbh.

Shutters of all types are available here in Florida. Folding, roll up, Bahama, etc. Of course, since we are in a hurricane prone area, we may have an advantage as far as availability goes. Pricewise, not so much. Those things are ridiculously expensive.

Ive made the mistake of using standard brad nails in cedar outdoors, in about a year you'll see some pretty bad iron sickness on the wood around each nail

I'm American but I agree with the comments that basically say the shutter should be half the width of a window. Or maybe a quarter or a sixth of the width if they are designed to look like they accordion. They should look like they would cover the window if they shut. I realize its an unpopular opinion in the US, but makes logical sense when you think about it. We opted not to reinstall shutters on our colonial house because the colonials didn't use shutters.

If you purchase fence cedar, the other alternative to sanding is if you have a thickness planer, take really light passes on one piece to set the removal depth, then start running them through the planer as fast as it will take 'em. Much quicker and takes a lot less effort than the sander, but again, you need a thickness planer.

I would say to use a 2x4 as the backer that the slats get attached to so that you can use screws instead of finish nails. Those boards are going to warp and eventually start falling apart as the glue is not going to be enough since there is not a lot of surface area that is glued. I speak from experience not just guessing. using a 2x4 would add an additional $2 to each shutter so not a huge deal.

They used to be attached with hinges and were closed over the windows in inclement weather or during storms. These ones are just useless decorations.

Shutters are traditional therefore you have to follow traditional rules when you install it. It looks silly if you don’t. You can’t break the rules with this. lol

A golden rule in architecture and design is: form follows function. I cannot see any function here. So this is just for decoration? What is the purpose of them? American window design system is really weird. You have no roll blinds, which are used in Europe, for privacy and shade. Also, no tilt for you to air out your house when cooking or when you just need fresh air in winter. These boards you put up look more like a thing when the house is abandoned.

Hinged shutters aren't very useful if you're not in a temperate climate and keeping the house open. I think people here prefer drapes over blinds for privacy... they're a little more nice in my opinion.

@@lovly2cu725 I'm not confused as to what shutters are for -- I'm typing this sitting next to some that are keeping the house cool. They're still commonly used for sun protection in lots of Europe, Australia, Asia etc., hence my response to the OP. They don't look particularly nice in this instance due to the lack of proportion and lack of other 'decor' on the house, and they are completely functionless, hence the whole things seems a little odd.
