In this tutorial, The GameSmith discusses how to build two different types of mushroom scatter terrain. First, we’ll modify some store bought mushrooms and then we’ll make our own mushrooms from scratch out of polymer clay. Whether you use mushrooms above or underground, these oversize fungi are great fantasy scatter terrain that can be used to break site lines and create cover for your favorite wargame and roleplaying game such as Warhammer, Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), and Pathfinder.
This video explores the benefits and drawbacks of using both homemade and store-bought scatter terrain. The techniques shows can be easily applied to other products and DIY designs. Once a crafter has an understanding of the methods used to modify and create these giant mushrooms, one can create an even greater variety of fantasy mushrooms. Even something as simple as changing the colors of the mushrooms can dramatically change the atmosphere at the game table.
From all of us here at TheGameSmith, we hope you find these scatter terrain hacks informative and helpful. We’ll see you at the table!

Time to revisit Series 1: Scatter Terrain. This week we have two types of mushroom builds. 1) store bought, and 2) home made. I'm not sure which build I like better, so I'd appreciate your feedback on which you prefer to help me decide.

@@TheGameSmithsTable No I haven't gotten into that part of terrain building yet. I have watched a few videos before that have used clay as well. I guess I have been afraid , I don't feel like I am very artsy. My own insecurities I suppose.

I think we all have insecurities when it comes to different things. When it comes to crafting, I've found the best way to get rid of those insecurities is to practice, experiment, practice, make A LOT of mistakes; oh... and practice. 😀

I know it's been a yeat since this was uploaded, but something I've found helpful is to paint the bases up to look like dirt before adding flock.

Whether it's a year ago or an hour ago, it's still good advice. Thanks for taking the time to share it. 👍

Store bought are much more easier, But expensive to find and buy, if even available. Polymer clay has it own issues (I've made over 100 so far) when making various sizes, depending on your poly clay brand & its consistency, the size you make them, and the decision to make from colored clay, or to re-paint them later. They can also be made from epoxy putty (milliput, green stuff) if weight is an issue. Polymer clay is heavy in larger sculpts.

I agree. I find that no matter what materials we choose to craft with they each present their own challenges.

I always put the gills on my fungi and mushrooms. I don't know why but it irritates the hell out of me if they are not there. Some people don't even notice or even care. But I have to have the gills.
