I did consider continuing on last year’s theme (22 books for 2022, 23 books for 2023), but thought that would very quickly bcome unsustainable, so we’ve gone down to 13 for this year. It’s been hard to narrow down the books, and not to get carried away and talk about each for half an hour, but here’s a whistle-stop tour of the books that have been the most lifechanging for me this year. They’ve honestly given me amazing frameworks that have made seeing life a lot more interesting, easier, more productive and healthy.
PS. Please forgive the super-cringe inclusion of my book in the list given the title of the video. I only titled it after it was filmed and given I think 12/13 of these books are actually underrated and life-changing, I took the emotional hit titling it this. Soz

Elizabeth, I just discovered your channel and have been binging all the videos. I relate to you so hard... I am a doctor (just finished training) who heavily questioned quitting medicine and went into pathology instead, but now trying to get back in touch with my artistic, creative, math-loving, book-loving side! And definitely share your 'chaotic,' lazy study style. Your videos are so inspiring for me. Good for you for figuring yourself out BEFORE going through all of med school and for making room to discover yourself!

Sci-fi is one of my fave genres. It gets me. That "creator-created" part was phenomenal editing. What a tongue-twister of a surname 😅This is a great, insightful reading list. 2023 is going to be an intellectually-stimulating year for me with these books. Thanks, Liz!

I was open minded but wary of "woo" when it came to The Untethered Soul and decided to take it out from the library at your behest a few videos ago and I'm so glad I gave it a chance. I followed it up with The Body Keeps the Score and I'm finding tremendous motivation to develop a regular practice to connect with my body, process my feelings, and integrate the experiences of both. Book recommendations are vulnerable and so I sincerely appreciate your willingness to share books that have had a significant and positive impact so we can all benefit.

Love the editing in this one, so stylish and unique! And great recommendations, I'm adding some to the list. My current favorite books are The Brothers Karamazov and Anna Karenina. A lot of people seem to think that the russian classics are heavy and difficult, but there is so much to ponder about the human condition in them, and much to enjoy.

The way you describe the way the author of "Love" puts some of our unknown or indescribable emotions into words really resonates with me. It is how I have determined some my favorite books. For me, Emily Bronte did this the most in "Wuthering Heights". I am looking forward to reading "Love" and all of the books on your list. You perform a great service to your viewers . Thank you.

Adding to my list! Another recommendation from me: *Colette Dowling, The Cinderella Syndrome-Women's hidden fear of independence* This one is especially for women who come from more conservative communities, most importantly for women who suffer imposter syndrome or sudden loss of ambition and motivation. Really, it can be read by anyone, but for women in this situation can just get so much out of it!

Omg! I have that same copy for "The Vindication of the rights of women"! I would highly recommend that particular edition because the first part of the book is about the life of the author and the context in which she was situated, which explains the relevance of her work. Additionally, the text notes at the back are essential for some terminology and cultural references that are very specific to Mary Wollstonecraft's time period.

Thank you for those recommendations.😊 I’ll definitely add some of them to my tbr list. If you haven’t already read it, I would highly recommend the short story “They're Made Out of Meat” by Terry Bisson. It leans into the philosophical side of sci-fi but it can also be interpreted on different levels. I read it with my students in class (I teach English as a second language) and it was amazing to see their different ideas and interpretations. Considering the books and papers you read, it’s probably too easy for you, but I think it could still be entertaining.

A book recommendation for 2023 (or earlier ;) ) from me would be: Chris Palmer MD, Brain Energy. In this book Chris Palmer, a Harvard psychiatrist, describes a unified theory of mental illnesses. The hypothesis is: Mental disorders are metabolic disorders of the brain. It's the research topic that could be excited the most in the last years. There is a 3h podcast episode in the Huberman lab with Chris Palmer.

Hello Elizabeth! Thank you for this overview. I decided to read again (adter neglecting it for years) thanks to your videos and how passionate you are about it. I’m sure that following you has had a great impact in my life, so thank you from the botton of my heart. Now, I want to recommend a trilogy I read years ago, and the thought of it still amazes me: These Dark Materials. It’s quite known, and now there’s a series about it too, but in the case you haven’t read it, I’ll just say I found it overwelmingly good and deep. It explores on so many cardinal aspects and issues of our world, while showing new magical universes. With this I wish you a great end of 2022. Take care

Hello. 2022 has been for me a year that I've changed a lot as a person in a good way. Among other things, I've started to read 20 books so far this year, which is way more than how much I usually read. My favourite book is Courage to be disliked, and I've seen your summary on your website while watching your video. I haven't read your whole summary, but I plan to do this very soon to compare your reflections with mine about this book.

My three favourite books: 1. Robert Anson Heinlen: To Sail Beyond Sunset - the very last and very best Heinlein's book. Everything comes together. I simply love Maureen 😍 2. Terry Pratchett: Thief of Time - best book about time I've ever read. Also Susan is my role-model 😉 3. Neil Gaiman: American Gods - it is hard to describe what this book is about. Maybe about searching for one's soul but make it crazy and colorful ✨

The insight you have as a 20-something maybe almost 30-something from your learning in your twenties is astounding. Fantastic video! I have FOUR new books on my TBR. _The Untethered Soul_ is the first book on my TBR. At a glance, this seems like a spiritual approach to many of the concepts outlined in ACT therapy. I am working my way through _A Liberated Mind_ by Stephen C. Hayes at the moment, and it is a book that has changed me. I am taking a lot of notes and doing all of the exercises in the book. _A Decent Life_ is also on my TBR. I can't wait to dig in. As of right now, my approach is to emphasize virtue-based ethics (aretaic) at the personal level and to emphasize utilitarian ethics at the social/structural level. When I hit upon this rough formula, something strange happened: I found that the utilitarian approach is far from being cold and unemotional. In terms of an individual's relationship to society, utilitarianism can be quite warm and inspiring. The pivot point is the realization that in practical terms, any "marginal" improvement you make to limiting harm or promoting happiness/pleasure/welfare is better than the status quo. Once again, thank you for a wonderful video and channel!

I loved PHM so much I couldn't start another book for a little while after, I felt a weird kind of grief that it was over. The Ender's shadow series is also really good. The first book is the same story as Ender's Game but through another characters perspective and then the rest of the series is how that character goes back to Earth and makes changes there while Ender does his thing in space. Orson Scott Card wasn't (in my opinion) a very good man, but I still love his work, I believe he's dead now but I still bought my books thrifted, which is what I tend to do when I want to have books by authors I don't want to support financially 😅 Death of the author and all that

As for a book recommendation, I always find intertextual connections following the points Betty Edwards makes in Drawing on the Artist Within. She gets into the 5 questions for Saturation. Questions so [creatively constructively] disruptive that she reworked them into the 4th Edition of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.

Thanks so much Lizi! 🥰 it was so inspirational, I will definitely pick up some of the books you mentioned! My favorite fictional books are „The song of Achilles“ and the series „The mirror visitor“ 😊 As for a non-fictional book, I really liked „This book will make you kinder“ :)

How bizarre is it that I had just started reading “The Untethered Soul” yesterday?! It was a recommendation on a podcast I listen to and now hearing someone as read as yourself recommending it I know this book was meant to be my next choice - thank you for the other recommendations as I have just started a book club with my family, this will be very helpful xx

Just started watching your videos a few days ago and I find them rather unique. Realistic and heartfelt. I think a good topic for a video would be the difference between information and knowledge. How to prevent information overload. Young people always confuse the two.

There's a series of books by Leonard Susskind called The Theoretical Minimum. They're not quite in the pop-science genre nor are they textbooks, but they are excellent at breaking down the mathematics which describe various theories. They're also quite a short read, roughly 200 to 300 A5 pages. Would recommend them to anyone studying physics either as a hobby or at university.

As someone who never read much after school, I've been trying to get back into it and discover what types of books I'm drawn to and what I can get from them. I happened to find the book, Stoner by John Edward Williams and absolutely loved it. It's a novel that follows the relatively life of the fictional character William Stoner, but the beautiful writing does such a great job conveying the emotions and intensity of the events in his life that would otherwise just seem "normal" to another person. I could hardly put it down, highly recommend.

Hello! First of all, very good video. I'm not a long time follower, but I thought you brought a more realistic approach to productivity. At least something I can somewhat relate to and not feel bad for not being a perfect human. I wanted to comment here because a lot of times, content creators bringing their personal choice for books has been the main point for me to stop following them. I think your favourite books chow who you truly are. For the first time I really have connected with your choices and I am very grateful for having you on this platform. I hope you have a nice day, and keep the good work. Thanks

I love the way you talk about productivity and work! It makes me feel so seen. Habits have never made sense for me. I have similar strategies for working on school/work projects but I really struggle with consistent exercise, cleaning my apartment, taking meds & those kinds of habits. How do you keep up with those areas of life in a way that works with your brain ?

Great recommendations! That quote from "Love" was incredible. Since you seem to be into popular physics books, I'd like to recommend Existential Physics by Sabine Hossenfelder and Primacy of Doubt by the English physicist by Tim Palmer. In Primacy of Doubt, Palmer gives a sweeping account of uncertainty in many different areas of science, ranging from Climate to Quantum Physics. It's one of the most insightful pop physics books I've read.

Hey Elizabeth, love your content I'm a bit of a nerd myself and definitely made it to the end. I really want to take a look at: The Untethered Soul, Organized Chaos, and Love, possiblity Creativity: The Psychology of Discovery but I'm a creative type so I'm not sure if that last one will be difficult reading.

Thanks for this video and sharing your thoughts and experiences. I recommending reading Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. It is a controversial book for many and people have mixed views but I absolutely love it. It change my life and perspective towards life and my work. I’ve read it twice and re-read parts of it when I need to give myself a pep talk. It’s story based in philosophy about love, life, relationships, work ethic, business and more. I would love to hear your summary about this book.
