You may have already seen this video in fast forward through Home Depot Canada's FB page. Yes that was me, now I'm posting it in a normal speed, so you can pick up on the key details.
In this video tutorial, I show you how to make a gorgeous privacy wall that will make your backyard feel like an oasis and look like you're on vacation!
I use MicroPro Sienna treated lumber, an eco friendly pressure treated lumber that has a great natural brown tone to it, so the colour you're seeing in my video, is the way you see it in store.
I used ripped fence boards to create this wall, I set my table saw to 2.5" and ripped 2 pieces from each fence board. The length for mine was under 4 ft wide.
The key to making the weave is the friction lock on the inner face frame and the center spine board I created from 2x2 or ripped 2x4.

Happy to report that my privacy wall is completed and looks fantastic. Wife and friends who’ve seen it love it and it looks so unique. Thanks for the fantastic video! One tip I’d like to give for anyone who’s also going to do this. For the fence pickets, when you bend them, if the section you are using has a large knot, it will crack. My wall is 16 feet and I learned this halfway through the 1st 4’ section. Wish I could post a pic here.

This is a great build. My wife and I put this together very easily after staining the boards. Make sure when you avoid knots in the middle of your 1x6's or they will snap at you when you bend them around the middle support.

I have been thinking of building privacy screens and this project looks like it would work. I also have a fire hydrant in the front of the house that I would like to screen out as well but would just make the screens up to the height of the hydrant, was thinking that two screens at an angle to each would screen out the hydrant.

You can achieve this with fence posts installed or simply reinforce the underside of the deck with blocking and use a top mount post bracket lagged into place. Hope this helps! 👍

I have a fair bit of extra 5/4x6 decking that I'd like to use for this. Do you think I would be able to swap this in for the 1x6 fence boards or would they be too stiff?
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer 2 жыл бұрын
5/4 will only work if it's super wet and the spans are wider than 4ft. It will all be dependent on your physical ability too. It is definitely stiffer by far.

Just saw this on CTV News and love this idea. Is there a way to build this kind of wall without having to plant posts? By planted posts, I mean having to dig down below the frost line and use cement? I have the idea to put something that is a little less than permanent, but I'm not sure how to do it. Also, I don't need something so tall, so there should be less exposure to wind.
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer 6 жыл бұрын
Steven Ercolani indeed you can always mount it top wise if you use proper brackets and make sure that it is not too tall.

@@pauldolynchuk8870 if you cut the 4x4 already, try building a separate 2x4 frame to top mount onto the posts. You can do a lap joint with the posts as well, but the integrity of the post will be compromised. But if you add 2x4 to each side this will reinforce the joint.

I would love to build this for my deck as we are on a corner lot and require privacy from people walking on the sidewalk. My concern is the deck is 3 1/2 feet off the ground and not sure if the wall would provide the same protection a railing would. Chris, are you able to shed some light on this? Thanks!
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer 4 жыл бұрын
This is a common question, and it can act as railing, you have to assemble the posts into the deck structure. Fastening with 2 bolted connections and proper blocking. Double check with your towns bylaws to also make sure of post spacing etc. Hope this helps!

Are the ripped fence boards same length as top and bottom plate ? ?
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer 5 жыл бұрын
They are cut to the length between the uprights, as I have 2 strips 2x2 between the 2x4's and the bottom/top plates are actually OD of the 2x4's so if you subtract 3" from your top/bottom plates that should be the fence board length.

Why don't you screw each ripped 1x6 into the frames you built on the post? Is the bend strong enough to hold them over time?
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer 4 жыл бұрын
The bend does hold them, but I do advise to staple the ends. Screws are too intrusive to the thin boards and create a splitting effect ince the wood has dried out.
