Quick DIY project to provide some privacy for the back patio of our house, dividing our living area from the business of the farm. Easy and relatively inexpensive - and quick to install or remove as needed.

How did you secure the posts to the ground? I love this idea. I'm trying to come up with something that would give provide privacy from my neighbors on one side who hate my dog. I think this would be perfect, but I don't have existing posts to attach it to. I bought some 4X6 trellises, but they were expensive, and I don't know how well they'll hold up.

@@novelist99 I used Simpson Strong Tie EZ Bases to secure new posts to existing concrete. It's not as sturdy as I had hoped because I didnt have anything else to anchor them to on the sides. But its still standing 2 years later!

YOU SIR, JUST MADE MY DREAM COME TRUE!!! I wanted a privacy screen railing that was simple. You gave me that. AND MORE! i I HAVE A HOBBIT HOUSE. IT NEEDS SOME FROU FROU. So, i can do my art work and paint roses on a panel of wood, WHICH I CAN SLIP IN AND OUT OF THE SLOTS IN THE POST AND MAKE THE MIDDLE PANEL OF WOOD OUT OF PLYWOOD SO IT CAN HOLD A MURAL. I don't know if i am describing this correctly so that you can understand what you did for me with your simple construction idea. But now, if need be, i can refresh my art work every year or easily change the motif with another panel with a differant design on it. i have been thinking for weeks how to construct an 'optional' private deck railing. AND YOU JUST HANDED ME A MIRACLE!!! IT MUST BE TOUGH BEING A GENIUS!!! THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH.

With more difficulty! I did a project or two on this channel where I screwed into metal posts. Pre-drill a pilot hole and use a self-tapping screw would be my starting point, but I'm no expert. Happily, the rails probably only need 3 or 4 attachment points each.

@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm Жыл бұрын
Things are definitely more expensive now than when I made the video. It's been a while since I put this together, and I'd pretty much have to make a supply list by watching the video and seeing what's available (and reasonable) in the stores. None of the frames went into concrete - just the wooden posts or the frame of the house.

@FraserValleyRoseFarm

I've never worked with alumawood, but from what I can see, some sources recommend you avoid drilling holes in it if you can. I might look at or research whether construction adhesive would be a good alternative.

This might look good in your mind's eye, but think twice before trying it in the real world. A neighbor built one of these in Western North Carolina using 2x10 (or thereabouts) southern yellow pine lumber as slats. I haven't measured the length of the slats, but they are in the 12 ft. range. Within a few weeks they were warping in all sorts of interesting, if unsightly and embarrassing, ways. The cups, bows, and crowns in the slats increased over the first few months and have persisted in dynamic motion since then, in some cases threatening to escape the containment channels. It would probably make a very cool super slo-mo video, but if that's not what you have in mind choose a different style of fence unless your slats are impervious to warping.
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the warning Michael. I haven't had any problem with warping yet, but something to look out for.
@michaelhopping6914

@@FraserValleyRoseFarm Differences in climate might account for different results. The Carolinas get about the same rainfall as you in BC, but our summers are steamy, not dry. A new development on the neighbor's fence. Last week (2nd winter) one of the vertical channel posts split lengthwise, possibly due to ice buildup in the channels, spilling the adjacent sections of slats. BTW, I enjoy your channel. My success with propagation via cuttings has improved significantly thanks to your videos.
