How to build the PASSÉ COMPOSÉ with ÊTRE // French conjugation course // Lesson 22

Yesterday we saw the passé composé with AVOIR, today it's time to learn the passé composé with ÊTRE. Most verbs are conjugated with avoir but you can remember the ones conjugated with ÊTRE with the rule "DR & MRS VANDERTRAMPP". The major change about the passé composé with ÊTRE is that the past participle will agree in gender and number with the subject (avoir doesn't).
If the subject is:
- Masculine / singular - add nothing
- Feminine / singular - add e
- Masculine / plural - add s
- Feminine / plural - add es

if u really want to remember the verbs that take etre, just try to memorize them as the following: entrer>> opposite>> sortir arriver>> partir aller>> venir monter>> descendre >> tomber naitre>> rester>> passer>> mourir>> retourner the rest are just modifications of the aforementioned verbs

Hello, At around 2:38 seconds you write "arrrivé" with three, count them, three r's, meaning that we are inevitably French pirates. Yaaaar! Also, my students say "Oui oui baguette" and one more thing - "passé" is really not one that tends to use Être, but rather avoir. But anyway, I suppose I could see how it's used that way...sometimes. Être is used with all the verbs of motion and we use it quite a lot. I am confused you are commenting this and saying that you are a teacher?

I found another (and from my perspective the easier to remember) mnemonic aid - so called "La Maison d'Être" to show all verbs of movement+stay in the house to be used with etre for making passe compose.

Merci pour votre leçon, très claire. I find a way that helps me to remember the Etre verbs, is to think of them as verbs with "movement" or " change of state". ( being born, dying etc). What do you think ??

Bonjour, I am following your book and videos. They are helping me in improving my French language skills. I've a question about this video, Can we not use Vous form as singular for both masculine and feminine? It should be like VOUS ÊTES DEVENU(E)(S). It has been given in the book but I think you missed it in the videos. Merci beaucoup

Dylan, you are the best, and I love your teaching, that's why I come to you for this help. Maybe I got confused between French tense and English. Is Passé composé the same as Passé Simple? I read a book and I got this "Il fut enterré". Why "Il fut enterré" and not "Il était enterré"? Why use FUT instead of ETAIT? Thanks

Passé simple is an old tense used in poetry and such. I always say that it's good to recognize it but you are never going to use it in real life :)

It's explained later in the course, check out the videos after that ;) It all depend if the movement is about you or something else.

No for one person formally, it won't take an s :)

Hi Dylane, does ‘on’ always take a plural past participle? Even if used in the sense of the English ‘one’ rather than ‘we’? Many thanks!

Hi Andy. In the case of one, the past participle stays the same but it's not as common to use the passé composé with on as one. The present tense is more common :)

Demeurer is conjugated with avoir. Être demeuré doesn’t mean the same thing at all. I would recommend you to never use it 😅

I came across a sentence "Nous nous sommes installés autour de la cheminée pour discuter." Being deep rooted with English mindset, I couldn't figure out why "installer" is a reflexive verb.😁 Then I found that "installer" is not listed with the rule "DR & MRS VANDERTRAMPP". As you mentioned earlier, it is not French if there is no exception. While I assumed the sentence is correctly written, are there other (daily) used verbs not included in the rule?🙏🙏

S'installer is a reflexive verb Pyeh 😉 It means to settle down, to "get cozy". But sometimes SE before a verb can indicate a passive reflexive. But it's not as common 😀

Bonjour. It is my understanding that the past participle can also be used with être as an adjective. If that is the case, then how does one know if a sentence such as this is representing a past action with PC or a present condition using the pp as an adjective? "La recette est restée presque la même"
